I believe it's very easy to say what would happen if there was a spot, on the field, that was open. Cochran is not a coach. He's a strength and conditioning guy. It's that simple. He's not getting the job.

I'm told Cecil was on Paul's show yesterday where Paul was trying to peg Cecil down on a narrative "Saban didn't give Scott a shot." From what I'm told, Cecil's response was "Alabama is not an entry-level coaching assignment."

I really don't understand why there's a belief Saban would consider this because the guy has been in the weight room for 13 years.

I think that SC was in a position of making too much money at his current job and would have to take a pay cut to go somewhere else to move into the role he really wants to do.

I have been there. I have taken lateral moves or pay cuts in order to move in the direction I felt I need to move to help my career long term. Cochran (I'm guessing), because of his relationship with Kirby, was able to parlay his career path into an on the field coaching position with out taking too big a hit on his finances. He may even get a pay raise out of it.

If Saban is unhappy he has two options: 1) fire Cochran and get a new guy, or 2) order Cochran to bring more science into the program. Which do you think he would do? Cochran leaving made the decision easy and gave CNS more latitude. I don't think either of the new guys will be making Cochran money. Saban may even be getting two for one. Either way, Alabama sets a new direction in S&C.

Yeah, you can't make a non-science based S&C director suddenly educated in that field to bring it to the level Ballou and Rhea bring it.

This was an easy way to ostensibly accomplish #1 without making anyone look bad with a firing.

Saban isn’t unhappy with the S&C program, but changes the direction he wants it to go? It would seem it’s pretty simple to me that Saban wasn’t happy with the program, so he changed it and wanted to add science. SC is a great S&C coach, but he’s not a scientist, so I think either way Saban was bringing somebody in that was of a more scientific mindset.

If Saban wanted SC at Bama he would’ve found a way to keep SC at Bama. Saban made it clear in his words that SC should find somewhere else to go. As Cecil said yesterday Alabama isn’t a school for OJT. SC isn’t a coach or shit don’t y’all think Saban would’ve seen it a long ass time ago? If he was a coach of any kind he’d be a coach at Bama

Kirby saw a chance to in his mind screw Bama and Saban and close the NC gap, so he took it.

A person comes to a point in his career that he may want to change. As you stated sometimes this means swallowing your pride and taking a pay cut. People do not necessarily like doing it but if you can get past ego it may be necessary.

With regards to Cochran at UGA, lets not act like the only thing he brings to UGA is the position on the field. This guy will have a positive impact in the locker room. To me that is what Kirby is getting. He may be an inexperienced special teams coach but he is not a green horn.

What I'm saying is that CNS could direct Cochran to find resources to add science to the S&C program, not that Cochran would suddenly learn it and implement himself. Cochran's decision to leave - not Saban's decision to get rid of him - created an opportunity for Saban to upgrade the system without having to fire anyone. If this had played out differently and Saban fired Cochran (assuming he didn't have an offer from Kirby), this board would be up in arms in disbelief. "How could he fire someone who contributed to six NCs?" Cochran isn't taking his success to UGA. He's starting a new chapter at UGA.
 
My view. Coach Cochran to Coach Saban, " Nick, I have worked under you for quite a long time. I have learned a lot and I would like to
have a shot at an on field coaching job. Can you make that happen? Coach Saban to Coach Cochran. "No, I don't think so Scott. We are not in the habit of hiring inexperienced coaches for any on field positions. If you really want a change of direction, I suggest and approve of you looking else where for your new job."

Ballou was making more (400K) than the UGA ST coach (330K). Doubt if he came for less than 500K.

Interesting that Saban did not feel the need to get Cochran higher on the list in terms of what the market was paying. There was a $200k difference in his pay and the top pay. Now the top pay seems a little out of alignment but even the 2nd highest would have been $140k.

Cissy probably wanted to be over there with Mary Beth so badly she promised to spend $45K less per year. :D

I can't believe UGA agreed to pay a coach with no on-field experience $220K more per year than their experienced on-field coach. :rolleyes:
