🏈 Ballou and Rhea take over UA S&C program

So did he put Georgia over the top and make a difference like Cochran clearly did for us? So will he move jobs again one year later and move coast to coast to coast?

Which team has a better future? Does he like the south? How much is he making and how much would Saban pay him? We all know that who you were in the past (Georgia) isn't necessarily who you are today and in the future. Can he bring good ideas, enthusiasm and results to Alabama?

I'm not saying he's the guy, but I'm sure CNS is making a list of top candidates. Whoever takes the job doesn't have to have an Alabama history.

I wish Coach Cochran all the best he did very well for us for many years. Having said that, I tend to agree with some of the comments that perhaps his program here was getting a bit stale and less effective the last couple/three seasons. I think in this case a change is probably good for both Cochran and for Bama.

ESPN reports he will be jawjas special teams coach.

I find this rather interesting...So, even if there was an on-the-field position for Cochran - and there have been several - Saban wasn't going to give it to him (reading between the lines in Coach Saban's comments yesterday tells me all I need to know). So Kirby Dumb makes the splash hire and grabs Cochran to be his new special teams coach. Dumb just lost his All-American kicker. Cochran, who hasn't coached on the field (since at least '07) is going to teach a new kicker properly? Hmm...Again, splash hire.

I don't think it's about who Georgia got. It's more about who Alabama lost.

I get that, but you said "so" as in you weren't caring about his history and what he may have done at Georgia, nor the fact he just moved across the country for a job. I was simply making a comment on where he came from and where he was, while also making a point if he would even consider the opportunity based on those two previous things.

Marquise Maze echoes your thoughts.

Just as a note. It appears Feld removed meniton of Oregon Football from his Twitter bio area.

Maze is right about not really knowing but one coach anymore but he is missing something though. If Cochran stayed he would have to get an on-field position. That would turn him into another coach that isn't available 24/7 to them. So, unless he was magically going to convince Cochran to stay at S&C there would be a new guy doing that anyway. Saban isn't God, but he has done a good job of getting people into the right positions to make everything work.

All the politics aside, I wonder if SC can Coach? He's been around it enough, I'm sure he has a good understanding of whatever he's being hired to do.
Special teams coordinator is a title. UGA's special teams are coached by all their coaches. It's UGA's system, adopted from what Kirby learned from Alabama who runs the same system. Right? Title.

The question I am looking to be answered is what it is Cochran brings to the playing field, as a coach. With that answer, is that what Kirby thinks UGA has been missing?

I get why Marquize may be upset.

That said, 12 years at one place is a long time. This is a good move for both sides.

Cochran's impact as a strength coach has diminished over the past ~5 years. Injuries mounted. Don't think Jeff Allen didn't have concerns as well.

We know that college coaching is a transient business. Coaches have short terms and long terms. Why did he take the Oregon role? Does he miss the south? While many of us "normal" people are focused on staying in one place, coaches go to where opportunities are. If you were to put Oregon side-by-side with Alabama, which is better? Which gives you more visibility? I agree with you that there are several reasons to stay in Eugene, but there a many reasons to leave (if given the opportunity).

Agreed. I didn't realize he was from Alabama when I wrote that, so that little bit changes a lot.
