🏈 GAME THREAD A-Day: 2018

Jalen looks like the same player we saw in his last 10 quarters beginning with the aub game. Cool under pressure, afraid of the deep ball unless wide open, rolls out right to throw it away. His passing game, including decisive timing is not improving. He is a monster player since arriving on campus, but his passing skills have not increased. JK Scott really spoiled me, he was such a weapon that fed our Defense. We are loaded at RB and the DL. Need work at OL and secondary, duh. August can't get here fast enough. Roll Tide

can't really argue with any of that.

Twitter saying Saban was caught on a hot mic very....frustrated, with Hurts.

i did hear him say something to the effect of: "...and we got the 3rd string quarterback (Jones) making throws and moving the ball down the field...." didn't really catch what he said after as the buy with the mic moved away from him.

i thought that was very telling.

My thoughts and i was close to action

Watched the broadcast and the finish on the app.. may have missed a series or two in between. Will re watch to check out the O line play but some things I noticed:

-Brian Robinson has "it". I don't see much difference between him and N. Harris... And that's not a dig at Harris, it's just time to understand we have 2 bad ass sophs

-First team DL looks pretty stiff. Didn't realize that R. Davis racked up 69 tackles last year... He is a star in the making but at the same time, Q Williams and Buggs will be special as well. Didn't notice much from Wynn or Mathis who are guys we may need to step up, but L. Ray was a beast. He looks like everything we need at DE.

-Chris Allen flashed a few times. Didn't catch any other edge guys but mostly because the DL were beating them to the QB.

-Hurts... I know the OL was getting beat... But plenty of times he took his drop and when it was time to throw the ball didn't come out. It's just gotten to the point where we can't say for 2 years now the WR's are covered. D. Harris had a tough drop that would have moved the O and got a ton of yards, but other than that he just wasn't on time and accurate. Refs even bailed him out on an early INT by calling a fingernail sack. Just didn't see one play that made you think he had progressed from last season. But the surprising part was that he didn't show any type of pep or body language that would impact his team... Just out there. Broadcast even mentioned his body language being down. He does not look like a guy excited or motivated to compete for his old job. JMO

-Mac Jones was a nice surprise. Had a few obvious brain farts that would have gotten his head taken off in a real game, but he was on time and on target for most of the day. Maybe his OL was better than the first team OL in terms of protection, but it's not like the 2nd team DL was straight scrubs either. Wasn't throwing to the top 3-4 WR's either. Just seems like a competent QB if he had to play, which is what it appears we may need sooner than later. On the other hand, he had great energy and seemed to be a guy the others liked playing with and showed some emotion... Which was probably highlighted since the other QB wasn't.

-Townsend to the house! That was an impressive play. Thought he was a lot like A. Stewart out of high school with his versatility, but looks like he'll find a home at WR. Would be fun to see him get some receptions next year... certainly not out of the realm of possibility.

-I'm semi concerned about the DB's. And not so much in pass coverage... More about tackling and physicality. I believe S. Smith will be fine but worried about how teams have really used the perimeter as a run game and attacked our DB's in the flats. Shy Carter is listed at 6 foot, but he looks absolutely tiny out there. I like Diggs but he didn't look very physical today. Thompson would be the one guy you can expect to thump people, but the rest of the group is young... Don't have all those off seasons to beef up under their belt yet. Will be the group to watch this year for sure

-Kicking - Beluvos, baby! Looked good to me! Punting - Ummm... Well it's only the Spring game... lol

In Regards to Suttles tweet......let's not forget that the sacks were the result of touch football on the QB.....I agree the DL has all the potential to be amazing, but I will not base my excitement off this game.

I have read a lot of folks being disappointed in Skyler Delong, but I'm excited about his potential. JK Scott truly spoiled us. When was the last time we had a punter that went to the NFL? 1995 Bryne Deihl. That was 23 years ago.

Remember Delong is an early entry. He should be going to his high school prom and getting ready for graduation, I'm not even sure the kid is 18 years old. He is 6"4" and 180 pounds. I would imagine a little more growing and a little more 4th Quarter Program and he will be a really good weapon.

My opinions:

Hurts was a disappointment. He didn't really show improvement on the areas he needed to. Don't tell me the O line was an issue. That was the #1 OLine vs the #1 Dline. He waited for receivers to get open and that took time; more time than he'll have in the Fall.

RBs looked good (except for too many dropped passes). I saw effort and depth. That's good.

Mac Jones was a pleasant surprise. Managed the game well. Showed flashes of passing excellence.

Defense overall looked good. This wasn't game situation defense, but there was pressure and coverage.

Receivers are close. Too many dropped balls.

I'm not saying that Tua should start. But, Hurts knows that he has pressure and better focus on getting tha ball into small windows and throwing to a spot the receiver can get to. The OLine needs consistency. For such a massive overhaul, the D is moving in the right direction.
