Portal News for the Day:

Cam Coleman Watch grips the Southern states of Alabama and Texas..

Cam had fun on his trip, stayed long than anticipated did not stay for the BBall game, probably good for us he didn't. He left to go home and "mull it over" from all spots I'm hearing on him everyone likes their chances. I know all 4 places think they're the front runner right now but I'd say it's likely between Texas and Bama still...I think Tech and TAMU are on the outside looking in right now. WE shall see, once again things change minute to minute. Someone could call his agent today and say "I'll give him $1,000,000 signing bonus if he comes to us" and that sways his decision...I don't think this one is about the money as much though. More about getting drafted in the 1st round and being developed by someone he trusts to put him in that position

A simple logic test. If Smothers was enrolled in school wouldn't that also mean he would have had to sign his Grant in Aid paperwork? @Brandon Van de Graaff If I'm right here the time line is actually that, reversed. They sign the GIA and then enroll.

Responded to @rick4bama yesterday regarding this when he brought it up... it isn't unusual for a player to enroll while on the visit if they intend to sign (semester has already started). It doesn't lock them into anything if they back out.

I think OL/DL is probably the most critical position and while it may not be the flashy D1 guys people want...the staff is investing in some lower level guys (Similar to what Indiana did) that have a lot of starts and snaps and are 3rd and 4th year players that may just fill the spots we need and shore up the OL.
I've been amused reading through some of the fans opinions on those guys. It has to be confusing to complain about playing the teams these guys come from in the fall and then seeing them transfer to P4 programs. I wonder if fans in general gave the CC guys from 10 years ago more respect than they do the FCS guys today?

Just to emphasize the point (with the number of TE's they've looked at in mind.) How many people do you think know where Cuevas went to school before Bama?

I can't remember paying attention to that with any player. I say that after mulling it over a bit.

The closest thing I can remember is a guy that was already in class and, as I recall, ran into something with compliance. I want to say his name was Aries, but I think I may be confusing him with Aries Monroe. I'm almost positive the kid was from Cali. And I'm pretty sure he was from a community college. I think he was in class for eight days.

The DuBose era, maybe?

I am more interested in the reason our guys left. Was it more money or the staff didn't believe they could be good players at Bama whether it was talent of attitude.

What are we getting in return for those that left? Players that left other programs for the very reasons our players departed?

JMO but I would have a crew working hard on FCS Division one talent HOPING to find talent that really wants to be coached and prove they can play with the big boys all the while getting a pay upgrade.

You ask why these players are at FCS 1 instead of the big boys? Possible coaches missed on evaluations just like they did on these 70 players that have left Bama in these past two years. Good news for those is they get to keep their 4* clippings.
It’s only FCS, not FCS 1. There is no FCS 2

Adding:

Sorry, hit the send button way too early.

Bama hosted DJ Chester - Expected to be a lean to Bama...but something came up during his visit with academics being an issue and then another school in the SEC (Mississippi State) just offered him a large $$ deal we'd have to be close to. After those concerns arose, the staff decided to back off his recruitment.

Jimothy Lewis - Similarly Bama's staff kinda backed off this because they had heard Haywood would be entering the portal and the staff see Haywood as a much stronger option former 5-star with a very high upside. Also Haywood projects as either guard or tackle which helps with flexibility on the line for us.

Haywood - Looking great here so far, he may take some visits elsewhere but everything I've heard is that Bama is way on top. We kept the bridge alive when he decided to decommit and flip to Michigan because of a massive bag offer. That really helped us here, this is part of the business too. Building and maintaining relationships with these guys even if they don't pan out immediately for you. IMO - This is the biggest portal get for us in this class..he WILL be a stud OL player somewhere eventually.

I'll add more in a bit, I had a LONG sleep today and I'm going to go cook up some eggs and pancakes.

I've mentioned compliance a few times in the last 48 hours. In the administrative "wing" academics is as diversified among the sports as its ever been.

But at the same time the compliance department appears to be the same. I haven't seen (published) additional staff even though the portal would only seemingly increase their work load.

There is a difference in the Ball St guy who played sparingly while there and was seen as a project vs plucking a multi year starter from a smaller school. Just a general comment as I have no clue about this Cal Poly guy.
Valid point. I still say there is quite a larger difference between the Ball St’s and Cal Poly’s of the world and the elites of CFB along the trenches. At this critical juncture, we aren’t merely looking for depth, we are looking for upgrades.

Absolutely agree. I think pulling those type of players are trying to find the diamonds in the rough who fell through the initial recruiting rankings and process.
