| MBB/WBB đźŹ€ 2024-25 Pre-season - Tide opens the season Monday night

We had a similar thread last year, and like it, I will update this one with the movement as it happens and next season's roster takes shape. Obviously, all the players in red that are set to return, won't. And others will be added via the portal. But I'll keep this updated and keep track of it as it all unfolds. As always, let me know of any errors/mistakes.

Also, keep in mind, there are 13 scholarship spots available per season. As of now, Alabama is +2 (15 scholarshipped players), which means at a minimum, 2 of the following will not return.

You could tell Oats was mad at the end of the game, and it was obvious it wasn't at his team. He was pretty fed up with the officials and the way the game was being played. They defended just fine most of the game. The majority of Memphis' points came from paint shots and free throws. The only thing I could really hark on them for was a few miscues on turnovers but a lot of that was generated by Memphis guys holding players and causing issues with our normal offensive rotation.

I will say 2nd chance shots and opportunities defensive rebounding needed to be better, they had a lot of extra chances.

The Crimson Tide had six players in double figures on Monday evening

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.
- Alabama men's basketball team concluded the preseason with a 96-88 win over the Memphis Tigers on Monday night inside Propst Arena at the Von Braun Center in the 2024 Rocket City Classic. Proceeds from the contest will support the Huntsville Hospital Foundation and their Caring House Children's Grief Program.
Mark Sears led the Crimson Tide with 20 total points, including three from beyond the arc on five attempts. The senior dished out four assists and picked up three steals by day's end. PJ Haggerty scored 32 points to lead the Memphis offense on Monday.

Head Coach Nate Oats Postgame Comments

"There's a reason we play these exhibitions: so we can get exposed a little bit on what we have to work on. We were definitely exposed tonight a little bit. Our turnovers were not where we needed to be, and we have to do a better job of taking care of the ball. Our defensive rebounding and our transition defense were exposed in a bad way. They got all over the offensive boards and had 36 fastbreak points. It's not good, so we have a lot of work to do before the regular season starts.
I thought it was good that we were able to get some young guys on the floor. Labaron Philon is a freshman, and he got to play, Aden Holloway is in his first year with our program and got to play decent minutes with some of the other guys being out. Derrion Reid has been out a lot in the summer and fall so he's a bit rusty, but we were able to get him 24 minutes. We need to get Clifford Omoruyi used to our pace and system a little bit more.
I'm super thankful that Memphis agreed to do this for us. I'm glad we got to come up here to Huntsville – I think the crowd was great, but I wish we would've played a little bit better for them in the second half. I enjoyed the game and I'm glad we got a win, but we definitely have a lot to work on here."

Yea one thing is Nate Oats will likely be playing around the with the lineup less when we enter the more meat of the schedule. Right now he's kinda just throwing some ideas out and seeing if they work.

Sears being the in-bounder on plays even ones under the basket was kinda sloppy and weird to watch. Probably just challenging his guys to figure it out without Mark out there directing them.

Also seemed to challenge Stevenson and Reid to dribble the ball up the floor against the press defense last night which caused quite a few turnovers for us. Unlike last game where he exclusively wanted Holloway to be the guy running the point and taking it up the court. These are the kinds of things though that will pay dividends later on when we need contributions from not just the starters.

Oats and Hardaway had several conversations throughout the game. It feels like they were giving each other feedback on players and I know they agreed on foul thing.

Watching the Memphis game for the first time.

Really clunky on offense early. Alabama was really active on D with their hands and did well on the boards. Transition D could be a lot better. Multiple times they allowed Memphis to push the ball upcourt with relative ease.

For an exhibition game, officials really did call a lot of tick tacky calls. But Alabama's positioning on D was pretty subpar all night. Gotta improve there (and we know Oats will hammer it).

Reid and Philon are just incredible as freshman. Philon is smooth with the ball and has the capability to break down the D any time he wants. Think his shot selection around the rim will improve as the season goes on and we'll see less blocks. Reid doesn't really have a good shooting stroke yet, but his play away from the ball is damn impressive.

Too many turnovers. Par the course for an Oats team early on in the season. Especially with new faces.

This team is elite in transition offense. It's hard to imagine many teams matching their pace.

Dioubate is Herb Jones 2.0.

Holloway had some open looks in the first half and didn't fire it. Also had some decent drives to the basket.
