⚾ 🥎 2018 UA BSB --Tide drops series against Texas A&M

Hey, we are used to dropping games like this the last number of years, so it's refreshing to see us turn the tables a little and win these suckers. They may not be top notch opponents, but atleast we're winning the games, boosting our confidence, and making most of the game situations. Our bats are on fire so far this season. Gonna need that in SEC play. Keep it hot fellas!

The big thing is that we beat the teams we are supposed to beat in the SEC. The LSU's, Florida's and such are going to be a struggle. If we can win 1 or two home series against the big guns, beat the teams that we should beat and battle to steal games on the road we can have a great season.. especially considering what our projections were.

Our SEC slate plays out like this.....

UGA
@ Tenn
#4 Kentucky
@ Mizzou
@ #10 A&M
#13 Barn
@ #7 Arky
Miss State
@ #17 LSwho
#11 Ole Pi$$

Rankings according to Baseball America. BAMA is ranked #26 in the Coaches Poll with an RPI of 26.

I don't see LSU challenging in baseball this season. I good ball club, but not up to what we've become accustomed to by LSU standards. (BTW, there's rumor of TOPS being cut BIG TIME which would have a big effect on their program.) Bama doesn't have UF until SECT play. UK, UArk, and A&M are the three series I see as the toughest for the Tide.

The 5:02 game was the fifth-longest game by time in program history

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – With runners on second and third and two down, junior Joe Breaux singled through the left side to cross the game-winner and help Alabama baseball walk off Georgia, 10-9, in 13 innings on Friday night at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The win in the SEC opener for UA moves the team to 16-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

"Our kids just kept scratching and clawing tonight," said Alabama head coach Brad Bohannon. "If we can clean up the game and keep that competitive spirit that we had tonight then that is really valuable and will help us going forward. I think it goes back to the experience that we have – we have a bunch of position players, or just players in general, that have been through the league, so it's a really special trait of our club to remain competitive and resilient. Hopefully we can continue to show that going forward."?

Alabama came away with the victory despite a season-high four errors in the field that led to six unearned runs. Junior Dylan Duarte(2-0) tallied the win with 3.0 innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits while striking out a pair.

Eight of the nine Crimson Tide starters on offense recorded at least one hit with seven total players tallying multi-hit efforts. Alabama was led by juniors Cobie Vance (3-7) and Jett Manning (3-6), who each provided three-hit days. Senior Chandler Avant led UA in RBI with three as part of his 2-for-6 night for his team-leading 12th multi-hit effort of the season. Junior Chandler Taylor added a team-high three runs scored, finishing 2-for-6 with a home run.

Georgia sprinted to a 5-0 lead in the top half of the first. The Bulldogs used five hits and two errors to gain the early advantage. The Crimson Tide got on the board in the bottom half of the first thanks to a solo shot from Taylor. The home run was the junior's team-leading seventh of the year and cut the deficit to 5-1 after one inning of play.

The two teams scored again in the fifth. Georgia added one run to its total, using a leadoff single followed by a double to cross a run. Alabama came right back in the home half, posting a three-spot to make it a 6-4 game through five. Taylor led off the frame with a single and stole second one batter later to put himself in scoring position. Following another out, Avant singled through the left side to score Taylor from second.

Junior Keith Holcombe followed with a single and a walk to freshman Sam Praytor loaded the bases for the Crimson Tide, forcing a UGA pitching change. Manning greeted the new pitcher with a single up the middle, scoring two runs to cut the deficit to two.

Georgia doubled its lead in the top of the sixth on the power of a two-run home run. With one down, UGA reached a batter on a miscue by the Tide infield and the very next hitter homered deep to right-center to set it at 8-4 heading into the final three innings.

Five runs in the seventh gave Alabama its first lead of the night, making it a 9-8 game in favor of the Crimson Tide. Holcombe led things off with a hit-by-pitch and was followed by singles from pinch-hitter Matt Malkin, a junior, and Vance to load the bases for UA. Senior Cody Henry singled in the next at-bat to move everyone up 90 feet and bring Holcombe across before a wild pitch to the next batter crossed one more run. Hit-by-pitches to both Taylor and Breaux brought in two more runs before Avant capped the scoring with a two-RBI single to left to put Alabama in front.

In the eighth, the Bulldogs led off with a single before the Bulldog runner advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and eventually third on a wild pitch. With two down, an errant throw by the Tide infield allowed the man from third to score and even things up at 9-9. The teams would go scoreless for the rest of regulation. Both teams had multiple chances for the win in extras, but it was the Crimson Tide that would come out on top in the 13th thanks to Breaux's walkoff single.

Alabama looks for the series win on Saturday afternoon in game two of the series, scheduled for a 1 p.m. CT first pitch. The Crimson Tide will call on senior right-hander Jake Walters in the start while the Bulldogs will counter with freshman righty Emerson Hancock. The game can be seen nationally on SEC Network with the duo of Mike Morgan and Mike Rooney on the call.

If I could just think of a good joke...

We showed we can win ugly. Let’s try pretty next!
It's a weird box score for Finnerty. You see 11 hits over six innings and thing "damn, not good." Then you see they got 96 pitches from him last night and there's a little encouragement with him getting that distance. Then you come back to eight runs...

Offense came through against a SEC opponents Friday night pitcher--some beauty can be found.

Not all on Finnerty. Of 8 runs given up only three of them ER against him. Numerous errors and ridiculous number of infield hits.
Oh yeah. Well aware. I really expected to see more of this type of play--defensive mistakes--early on in the season. Vance had a bad night but they were putting the ball in play a lot.

Oh...Holcombe hit by a pitch again. I'm going to have to go count because I'm not sure they keep that stat listed on rt.com

Lost Game 2. See we gave up runs early. But tried to make a comeback. Hard to do so that late in a game needing six. Hoping we can pull out the series win tomorrow. I'm playing a round, then headed over to the Linger Longer to watch our biys play on the links. Keep me posted on Game 3!

The Tide scored five in the eighth and had the tying and winning runs on base but could not come away with the win

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A five-run eighth was not enough for Alabama baseball, as the Crimson Tide's comeback came up just short in Saturday's 6-5 loss to Georgia. Following the midday contest, the Tide is 16-4 overall and 1-1 in Southeastern Conference play.

"I'm really proud of the way our kids are competing," said Alabama head coach Brad Bohannon. "Individually and as a team, in a 56-game season and in the Southeastern Conference, there's going to be a ton of ups and downs, even during a game. Two games into our league schedule, and we've done a good job of competing for nine full innings. I think that'll be good for us going forward if we can keep this same competitive spirit."?

Alabama had one hit through its first seven innings before the bats woke up for five runs on four hits and an error in the eighth. The tying and winning runs reached for UA with two down in that same inning, but Alabama was unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

Georgia struck first for the second day in a row, hopping out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. After a leadoff single followed by a walk placed runners on first and second, a double scored a pair for the Bulldogs. One out later, a walk followed by a single plated one more before an infield groundout scored the inning's final run.

The Bulldogs added two more in the fifth, using a two-out rally to extend the lead. Georgia recorded a two-out single and was gifted a wild pitch to put the runner in scoring position before a double brought one run across. In the next at-bat, a single through the left side crossed one more run for the Bulldogs, making it a 6-0 contest.

Alabama made it interesting in the eighth, with the offense putting up five runs and setting things at 6-5. Redshirt sophomore Connor Stutts started the rally, reaching base on a hit-by-pitch. Freshman Sam Praytor followed with a single before a walk to junior Jett Manning loaded the bases for Alabama and forced the UGA starter out of the game.

Cobie Vance, a junior, proceeded to single off the Bulldog reliever, moving everyone up a station and scoring one in the process. One out later, senior Chandler Avant cleared the bases with a grand slam to left. Following Avant's grand slam, the Tide reached one on a two-out error before a Keith Holcombe single through the right side put runners on the corners. The Crimson Tide could not get the key hit to even things up, as an 0-2 flyout ended the inning.

Avant led all hitters with a 2-for-4 day that included his grand slam, four RBI and one run scored. The two-hit effort was Avant's team-leading 13th multi-hit effort of the season. Also adding a hit for the Crimson Tide were Vance, Holcombe and Praytor.

Jake Walters (2-2) suffered the loss in the starting effort. The senior allowed six runs on six hits and three walks while striking out six. After a four-run first, Walters settled in to retire 13 consecutive batters heading to the fifth, where the Bulldogs would collect three hits and two runs, proving to be the difference on the afternoon. The Crimson Tide bullpen followed for 3.1 scoreless frames to keep the game within reach but the Tide came up just short.

Alabama and Georgia return to the diamond tomorrow at 2 p.m. CT to decide the series. The finale will feature a pair of left-handers, with the Crimson Tide sending redshirt freshman Garret Rukes to the mound while the Bulldogs counter with freshman Ryan Webb. Sunday's matchup can be seen nationally on SEC Network with Mike Morgan and Mike Rooney calling all the action once again.
