⚾ 🥎 2018 UA BSB --Tide drops series against Texas A&M

Tide battled all day but was unable to complete the comeback win

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama baseball fell short in its comeback effort, as the Crimson Tide suffered a 6-5 loss to Georgia in Sunday's series finale at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The loss moves UA to 16-5 overall and 1-2 to start Southeastern Conference play.

"It was a tough day," said Alabama head coach Brad Bohannon. "We were a swing away from being 3-0 in the league and also a swing away from being 0-3 – that's SEC baseball for you. The kids competed really well over a three-day period, but we've got to play cleaner baseball. I didn't think the quality of our at-bats were quite to the level that they could've been. Three of the six guys that scored today (for Georgia), we walked them, and we had a couple of minor defensive miscues. The kids are competing really hard, there's just a very small margin of error in SEC baseball."

In a back and forth game, Alabama evened the score once and was within one run of tying the game on two separate occasions but was unable to complete the comeback. Georgia's two unearned runs in the eighth would prove the difference after a defensive miscue by the Tide extended the inning before an eventual home run secured the win for the Bulldogs.

Georgia struck first for the third consecutive day, putting up one in the top of the first. The Bulldogs drew a one-out walk and followed with a single and a walk with two down to load the bases. During the next at-bat, a wild pitch bounced over the catcher and to the backstop to bring in the game's first run, giving UGA the 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, the Tide would even things up at one apiece on the power of a solo home run from junior Chandler Taylor. The homer was Taylor's team-leading eighth of the season and his fourth over his last five games.

Both teams would score in the fifth, starting with three runs from the Bulldogs in the top half of the inning. A leadoff single and a one out walk put two aboard. Another walk one out later loaded the bases for UGA before a balk brought in the go-ahead run. Following the balk, the batter delivered a single to center to bring in two more and put Georgia in front, 4-1.

The Crimson Tide answered back with a pair of runs in the home half to narrow the gap to one. Alabama's rally began with a leadoff single from junior Jett Manning. One out later, fellow junior Cobie Vance doubled to right to put two in scoring position for the Tide. A walk to junior Joe Breaux loaded the bases for Hunter Alexander, with the senior being hit by the pitch to cross a run. A walk to Taylor in the next at-bat closed out the inning's scoring to narrow the gap for the Crimson Tide.

Alabama had chances to even things up in the seventh, loading the bases with no outs. A strikeout and a 6-3 double play ended the threat with the Tide going scoreless. The Bulldogs would extend the lead in the eighth, using an error to reach one before a two-out home run to right pushed the Georgia lead to 6-3.

The Crimson Tide made things interesting up until the final out, scoring two in the ninth. Freshman Sam Praytor singled to lead off the inning before a one-out double from Breaux put both players in scoring position. With two down, Taylor walked to load the bases for UA. Senior Chandler Avant came through in the clutch, singling to left-center for a pair of RBI, putting the Tide within a run. In the next at-bat, junior Keith Holcombe hit a missile on the ground towards first but a clean play by the UGA first baseman led to the putout at the bag and ended things in Georgia's favor at 6-5.

Avant and Praytor each contributed two hits on the day to lead the Tide. Avant added two RBI while Praytor contributed one run scored. Taylor's home run was part of his 1-for-3 day that included two RBI, a pair of walks and one run scored. On the hill, sophomore Davis Vainer (2-1) suffered the loss.

The Crimson Tide now begins a series of five games away from Tuscaloosa, the first of which will come on Tuesday. Alabama will head to Birmingham to take on UAB at Regions Field with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. CT. The game can be seen live on Conference USA Television.

Baseball Suffers Midweek Loss at UAB, 6-4
Rain-delayed game goes in favor of the Blazers

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama baseball suffered its first midweek loss of the 2018 season, falling at UAB on Tuesday evening by a score of 6-4. The Crimson Tide now sits at 16-6 on the season.

"It was wet, it was windy and it was a tough night to play," said Alabama head coach Brad Bohannon. "It was the fourth game in a row that we've given up a crooked number in the first inning, so we've obviously got to find a way to start differently. We've got to play better, and I just told the kids that – if we want to win, we have got to play better baseball."

Alabama got one run in the top of the first to take the early lead, but UAB came back with four runs in the home half of the inning and forced the Tide to play from behind all night.

The Tide gained the advantage in the top of the first with one run. Junior Joe Breaux reached on a fielder's choice to give the Crimson Tide a one-out runner and was followed by Chandler Taylor, with the junior delivering a single to put runners on the corners. A hit-by-pitch loaded the base in the next at-bat before a fielder's choice from junior Keith Holcombe crossed the game's first run, making it 1-0.

The Blazers came right back with four runs in the bottom of the first to take the 4-1 lead after one full inning of play. A one-out single and a hit-by-pitch put a pair on before one more single brought in UAB's first run. The next hitter homered to right to add three more and give the Blazers their first lead of the night. UAB added one more in the second, using a leadoff triple followed by a 4-3 groundout to cross the man from third and setting the score at 5-1.

Alabama cut into the lead with a pair of runs in the third to narrow the Blazer advantage to two at 5-3. A leadoff single from Vance put one on before a one-out home run from Taylor added a quick two runs. The home run was Taylor's team-leading ninth of the season and his fifth in the last six games.

The lead was cut in half to 5-4 after UA added one more in the fourth. Junior Matt Malkin led off the inning with a single before a one-out single from Vance put two aboard for Breaux, who delivered an RBI-single to cross the leadoff man. That would cap the Tide's scoring on the night.

UAB would add one more in the bottom of the seventh, using three singles in the inning to gain a two-run lead once again at 6-4.

Crimson Tide starter Sam Gardner (1-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing five runs on nine hits and two walks with five total strikeouts. The junior threw a season-high 103 pitches in his first midweek outing of the season. The 1-2-3 hitters in the Tide order paced the Alabama offense, providing seven of the team's eight hits. Vance and Breaux each went 3-for-5 while Taylor finished 2-for-5.

Next up for the Crimson Tide is a weekend trip to Knoxville as Alabama and Tennessee square off for a three-game series. First pitch of the opener is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network+. The final two games of the weekend will air nationally on SEC Network with Saturday's matchup at 5 p.m. CT and the series finale on Sunday slated for a 2 p.m. CT first pitch.

LEADING OFF
• Alabama and Tennessee will meet for the 112th time in series history when the teams match up for game one of the weekend on Friday evening. This weekend's trip to Knoxville will be the Crimson Tide's first since the 2014 season. In that pairing from April 18-20, UA came away with wins in the first two games of the weekend to claim the series win, 2-1.
• The Crimson Tide holds the all-time series advantage at 75-36, including a 25-19 mark in Knoxville. The series began in 1897 with Alabama sweeping Tennessee across three games in the inaugural meetings. The sweep began a streak of 13 straight series wins or ties in two- or three-game series before UT earned its first series victory over the Tide from March 12-13, 1988, in Knoxville. That three-game set saw the Volunteers claim the bookend contests for the 2-1 weekend win.
• UA maintains a slight 6-4 advantage across the last 10 games between the cross-division rivals and has registered a series victory in seven of the last 10 three-game pairings overall, including three consecutive series victories dating back to the 2013 campaign.
• The two teams last met in from March 25-26, 2016, in Tuscaloosa. Alabama opened the series with a 7-3 win to open the weekend before an 11-3 victory in game one of Saturday's doubleheader clinched the series victory in the first SEC matchup ever at The "New" Joe. The Volunteers avoided the sweep in game two of the doubleheader with a 6-3 win to close out the weekend.
• Tennessee welcomes Alabama to Knoxville with a 13-9 overall record, a 9-7 mark at home and a 1-2 tally in Southeastern Conference play. The Volunteers spent last weekend in Oxford against No. 8 Ole Miss, securing a game-one win by a score of 8-6 before falling in the weekend's final two games to the Rebels. Most recently, the Vols suffered a 9-6 loss to East Tennessee State on Tuesday.
• Alabama will return to its rotation from a weekend ago. Friday's start will feature junior right-hander Sam Finnerty, with senior righty Jake Walters following on Saturday. Redshirt freshman Garret Rukes will get the call on Sunday. The left-hander will be making his second career SEC start and his fifth start of the season for the Crimson Tide.
• Tennessee will call on freshman left-hander Garrett Crochet in the weekend opener. Saturday's matchup will feature sophomore righty Garrett Stallings while junior right-hander Will Neely will get the call on Sunday in the series finale.

PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUPS
FRIDAY: UASam Finnerty (Jr., RHP) vs. TENN – Garrett Crochet (Fr., LHP)
SATURDAY: UAJake Walters (Sr., RHP) vs. TENN – Garrett Stallings (So., RHP)
SUNDAY: UAGarret Rukes (R-Fr., LHP) vs. TENN – Will Neely (Jr., RHP)

ABOUT ALABAMA
• The Crimson Tide heads to Knoxville with a 1-3 mark over its last four games. On Tuesday, Alabama fell to UAB, 6-4, in a wet and windy contest at Regions Field in Birmingham. Last weekend, the Tide secured an extra-innings victory in game one of this weekend's three-game series with Georgia to open SEC play.
• Alabama suffered its first midweek loss of the 2018 season, falling at UAB on Tuesday evening by a score of 6-4. The Tide got one run in the top of the first to take the early lead, but UAB came back with four runs in the home half of the inning and forced the Tide to play from behind all night.
• The 1-2-3 hitters in the Tide order paced the Alabama offense against the Blazers, providing seven of the team's eight hits. Cobie Vance and Joe Breaux each went 3-for-5 while Chandler Taylor finished 2-for-5 with his team-leading ninth home run of the season and a team-high two RBI.
• With runners on second and third and two down, Breaux singled through the left side to cross the game-winner and help Alabama walk off Georgia, 10-9, in 13 innings on Friday night at Sewell-Thomas Stadium as the Crimson Tide came away with the victory despite a season-high four errors in the field that led to six unearned runs.
Dylan Duarte tallied the win with 3.0 innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits while striking out a pair in the series opener.
• Eight of the nine Crimson Tide starters on offense recorded at least one hit with seven total players tallying multi-hit efforts on Friday. Alabama was led by Vance and Jett Manning, who each provided three-hit days. Chandler Avant led UA in RBI with three as part of his 2-for-6 night, while Taylor added a team-high three runs scored, finishing 2-for-6 with a home run.
• A five-run eighth was not enough, as the Tide's comeback came up just short in Saturday's 6-5 loss to Georgia. Alabama had one hit through its first seven innings before the bats woke up for five runs on four hits and an error in the eighth. The tying and winning runs reached for UA with two down in that same inning, but UA was unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
• Avant led all hitters with a 2-for-4 day that included a grand slam, four RBI and one run scored in the middle game of the weekend.
• Alabama fell short in its comeback effort, as the Crimson Tide suffered a 6-5 loss to Georgia in Sunday's series finale.
• Alabama returned 21 letterwinners while losing 11 from the 2017 squad. The 2018 Crimson Tide welcomed back eight positional starters and three starting pitchers while hosting 11 newcomers (including one transfer who sat out last season).

ABOUT TENNESSEE
• Tennessee returned 17 letterwinners, including seven positional starters and 10 pitchers, from a 2017 squad that finished 27-25 overall and 7-21 in SEC play. The 2018 roster is without 13 letterwinners from a season ago, a number that includes six positional starters and seven pitchers, while the Vols welcome 15 newcomers.
• The Volunteers were selected to finish seventh in the East and 13th overall in the Southeastern Conference in the league's preseason poll, as voted on by the league's head coaches.
• Tony Vitello is in his first year at the helm of the Tennessee program after spending the previous 14 seasons as one of the top assistants in college baseball. A 2002 graduate of Missouri, Vitello is assisted by Frank Anderson and Josh Elander along with volunteer assistant Ross Kivett. The Volunteers' student assistant coach is former Major League catcher J.P. Arencibia.
• Tennessee baseball was founded in 1897 with the program holding a 2,003-1,576-14 record entering the 2018 campaign. The Volunteers have claimed three SEC Championships and have advanced to the NCAA postseason on nine occasions, reaching the College World Series four times in program history.
• The University of Tennessee is a public university located in Knoxville, Tenn., and boasts an enrollment of 28,321 students. Founded on Sept. 10, 1794, two years before Tennessee became a state, the University was originally founded at Blount College.

The Volunteers secured the win in the ninth with a bases-loaded walk

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Alabama baseball suffered a 5-4 loss to Tennessee on Friday night at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, as the Volunteers walked it off in the ninth. The Crimson Tide is now 16-7 overall and 1-3 in league play following the series-opening matchup.

"Tonight was a very competitive game that could have gone either way," said Alabama head coach Brad Bohannon. "Unfortunately, Tennessee made a few more plays down the stretch that enabled them to come out on top. I'm very proud of the way our kids competed, and I expect the next two games of the series to be very similar to tonight."

In a game that featured three lead changes and two ties, Tennessee was able to come out on top. The Crimson Tide had the winning run in scoring position in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings but could not cross the go-ahead score. The bottom of the ninth saw the Volunteers draw a two-out walk followed by a costly Tide miscue to extend the inning. One more walk loaded the bases before the inning's final free pass crossed the winning run for Tennessee.

The Volunteers jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage after one. Three consecutive two-out singles brought a run across for UT to give them the lead. Tennessee added another tally in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead by two. Back-to-back one-out singles followed by a double brought in the Vols' second run, making it 2-0 through four.

In the top of the fifth, Alabama took its first lead of the night with three runs on as many hits to set the score at 3-2. Junior Matt Malkin led off the inning with a double to right before a 4-3 groundout in the next at-bat moved him into scoring position. One out later, senior Chandler Avant recorded his team-leading 10th double of the season, scoring Malkin for UA's first run of the night. Junior Chandler Taylor took advantage of his opportunity in the next at-bat, singling to center to bring in Avant and even the score up. A stolen base, passed ball and then a wild pitch advanced Taylor station-to-station, eventually crossing him for the go-ahead run.

The Volunteers countered in the bottom of the fifth, tying things up at 3-3 before UT regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth with one more run.

In the top of the eighth, Alabama evened things up again, this time at 4-4. A one-out walk for Keith Holcombe gave the Tide a baserunner. A wild pitch moved Holcombe to second and an errant throw on the play went into center, allowing the junior to move up to third. A walk followed by another out brought Malkin to the plate. The junior delivered a single to center to bring in the tying run and make things even heading to the ninth, where Tennessee would go on to clinch the win. Junior Deacon Medders (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing one unearned run on six walks.

The two teams return to the diamond tomorrow evening for a 5 p.m. CT first pitch in Knoxville. The Crimson Tide will send senior right-hander Jake Walters to the mound while the Volunteers counter with sophomore righty Garrett Stallings. The game will air nationally on SEC Network.

Baseball Falls in Series Opener at Tennessee, 5-4 - Alabama Athletics

I haven't counted yet...
* I was casually listening to the game last night and if I heard this correctly the HBP last night marked the 48th time it's happened this season--over 23 games, mind you.

* Out of the seven losses, four have come by one run; one by two. We're seeing a lot of guys left on base this season in losses:
UT-11
UAB- 11
UGA- 7 & 5
NMS- 7
OU- 12 (16-4 loss)
OU- 11

Hence the reason I was pessimistic about the offense when the Tide started facing quality pitching.

Did you happen to see the 2-2 pitch called ball 3 that was followed by ball 4 walk off. Dear God, you can’t throw a ball any more in the middle of the strike zone! Hitting with runners on is obviously the issue, but WTF ump?!?!

I saw a few like that. It appeared blue was about to call it a strike, hesitated as if he was thinking about it for a second, and then called it a ball.

The teams are scheduled for two seven-inning games on Sunday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Saturday contest between Alabama and Tennessee has been postponed and will be rescheduled as part of a doubleheader on Sunday, the two teams announced.

Both contests on Sunday will be seven-inning affairs with first pitch of game one set for 11 a.m. CT on SEC Network+. Game two of the day is still scheduled for a 2 p.m. CT first pitch on SEC Network. The second game cannot start before 2 p.m. CT.

Alabama-Tennessee to Play Doubleheader on Sunday - Alabama Athletics

The Volunteers came away with a 2-1 win in game one before a 3-0 shutout victory in the day’s second contest

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Alabama baseball fell in both games of the Sunday's doubleheader with Tennessee at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The Volunteers came away with a 2-1 win in game one before a 3-0 victory in the series finale. Following the weekend with Tennessee, the Crimson Tide is 16-9 overall and 1-5 in Southeastern Conference play.

"Those were two tough SEC losses that we had chances to win today," said Alabama head coach Brad Bohannon. "Tennessee did a great job of taking advantage of our mistakes in the two bad innings. (Garrett) Stallings and (Will) Neely did a good job of making us earn everything we got in both games, and we just couldn't string enough hits together."

Alabama took a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning, but a pair of Tide miscues led to two unearned runs for UT in the game-one win. The Crimson Tide then fell, 3-0, in game two as the Vols opened up with a 2-0 lead after one inning of play, adding a third run in the sixth to secure the win.

Next up for the Crimson Tide is a trip to Montgomery to face off with Auburn for the annual MAX Capital City Classic on Tuesday evening. The non-conference contest is scheduled for a 6:35 p.m. CT first pitch at Riverwalk Stadium, home to the Montgomery Biscuits.

GAME ONE

The Crimson Tide fell, 2-1, in game one of the doubleheader. After gaining the lead in the fifth, the Tide allowed two unearned runs in the sixth to suffer the loss.

Alabama got its run in the fifth. Junior Matt Malkin began the rally with a two-out single. The Tide backstop was then replaced by a pinch-runner in redshirt sophomore Connor Stutts. In the next at-bat, junior Keith Holcombe sent a grounder to second that the defender passed on throwing the ball to first, eventually deciding to try to get Stutts out at third. The throw sailed out of play and was a dead ball, advancing both runners and bringing Stutts in for the first run of the day.

Tennessee answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to earn the victory. In that sixth, an errant throw with two down extended the inning and allowed the tying run to score for Tennessee. A walk followed to load the bases before one more free pass brought in the game-winning run. Alabama would get a runner to third with two down in the ninth, but the Vols closed it out with a strikeout looking.

The tight game featured two impressive pitching performances from each team's starter, with Alabama's Jake Walters (2-3) suffering the hard-luck loss. The senior worked 5.2 innings, allowing two unearned runs on only four hits and two walks. Walters provided the Tide with his best start of the season, not allowing a hit until the fourth inning and striking out a season-high nine batters, which matched his most for a single game in SEC play for his career.

GAME TWO

Alabama suffered a 3-0 shutout loss in game two of the afternoon.

Tennessee jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first. The Vols drew a walk with one down before back-to-back singles with an error on the second hit plated a pair of unearned runs. In the sixth, Tennessee added one more. A leadoff single and a wild pitch put a runner in scoring position before a two-out single to right crossed one more, making it a 3-0 game, the eventual final.

Alabama received another strong game from its arms. Starter Garret Rukes contributed 3.0 innings, allowing two runs – both unearned – on three hits and two walks while striking out four. The redshirt freshman handed the ball over to redshirt sophomore Kyle Cameron out of the bullpen.

Cameron allowed one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts across his 3.0 relief innings to keep the Crimson Tide within striking distance.

Alabama Baseball Suffers Pair of Losses at Tennessee in Sunday Doubleheader - Alabama Athletics

I thought I heard the announcers saying yesterday that this team had eight returning starters. It's not difficult to see how they won only 19 games last season. This season could get U-G-L-Y. 1-5 won't get any team out of any cellar.

I watched on television this weekend because I didn't feel like dealing with cooler weather or the road construction on I-75 or the Knoxville riff-raff. I'm glad I didn't attend. It just doesn't look like this team has a lot going for it. Maybe they've been great all year and I haven't seen it. But, the approaches at the plate that were supposed to be vastly improved? I'm not seeing it. Of course, this is SEC pitching Bama's facing now. When the Tide isn't batting, they don't field particularly well. Their pitching seems suspect. One thing I absolutely love though...that A on the crimson uniforms. Other than that, this doesn't look much like Bama teams back in the day.

Chief, Pitching is and issue that any of us who were paying attention early in the season noticed and its not going away. This team at least plays with some heart and seems to be fighting with all they got. I think they may be a little intimidated by the Talent in the SEC. Listen, all of these teams in the SEC are high quality teams. South Carolina, LSU, Florida, Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Texas A&M, Auburn are all top tier teams and the Mississippi schools, Georgia and Tennessee are no joke.. there are zero easy wins on this schedule and we have a young team with little pitching.

That said, I like coach B and his style. Gaspard didn't seem to have a heartbeat at times and he was getting killed in recruiting. We have tremendous talent in state and need to be getting our share of them instead of getting Juco kid from California. It will take time but he has started making in roads with the top tier high school talent/teams throughout the state. In the meantime, I am happy to support a team that fighting their ass off and I think these guys have some juice.

Auburn, Alabama set for Capital City Classic
WAAY

As Auburn and Alabama prepare for the 10th annual Max Capital City Classic at the Montgomery Biscuit's Riverwalk Stadium, the two teams need wins to break some recent skids. Over the last 14 games the two teams have gone a combined 4-10 since diving into SEC play so maybe a rivalry matchup is the shot in the arm the two teams need to get back on track.

Projected Starters

• Auburn, Fr. LHP Jack Owen (0-1, 6.10) vs. Alabama, Jr. RHP Mason Duke (2-0, 0.00)

What to know about the Tigers

• Auburn recorded its 20th win in just its 24th game of the season, marking the fewest games needed to get to 20 wins since doing so in 22 games in 1999.

• Last weekend’s series at Kentucky marked Auburn’s second straight against a top-10 opponent. Four of the Tigers’ five road trips in conference play come against current top-10 teams.

• Jack Owen makes his second straight midweek start for the Tigers. Outside of his fourth inning at Georgia Tech last week, Owen had allowed two runs in his first 10.0 innings pitched.

• Will Holland is 8-of-22 (.364) with seven RBI during his current six-game hitting streak. Holland has recorded an RBI in four straight games and seven of the last nine games.

• Luke Jarvis has recorded a hit in seven of the last eight games and has gone 11-of-29 (.379) over that stretch. Jarvis also recorded a hit in 16 of the last 19 games.

• Auburn is 8-0 when scoring in the first inning this season, 14-0 when scoring five or more runs and 15-0 when out-hitting an opponent.

• Auburn has totaled 195 runs through 25 games, marking the most runs to this point in a season since 2010. The Tigers rank fourth in the SEC and 11th in the country in runs. The team’s 7.8 runs per game are also good for fourth in the league and 13th in the NCAA.

What to know about the Crimson Tide

• Alabama enters the week with a 16-9 overall record and a 1-5 mark in conference play. The Crimson Tide lost two of three games against Georgia to open conference play before getting swept at Tennessee last weekend.

• Offensively, Alabama is hitting .292 as a team and is led by Chandler Avant, who has turned in a .365 average this season. Avant also leads the team with 27 RBI, while Chandler Taylor has been the top power guy with nine home runs, which ranks tied for fifth in the conference.

• On the mound, starting pitcher Mason Duke will make his third start and eighth appearance of the season. Duke hasn’t allowed an earned run in 15.2 innings of work. He has struck out 18 and walked three.

Series History vs. Alabama

• Auburn has won eight of the nine Capital City Classic matchups in Montgomery, including three straight. However, Alabama holds a 161-128 advantage in the in-state rivalry that dates back to 1896.
