🏈 1 for last 7 FGs; offensive lack of creativity

OK - I put up wrong snapshot stat on FGs - we were actually, 2 for the last 8 on FGs at one point yesterday. We are 3 for 9 in the last two games. No matter how you slice it, it's pretty darn crappy. What's worse is that it even matters at all. Our offense continues to lack creativity. I watched the game last night with my Florida-fan buddy. He commented several times about our offensive play-calling and how predictable it is. He also commented on riding Trent like a rented mule and that defenses simply stack up the box. He also noted how un-dominating our O-Line seems compared to when we spanked his Gators the last few years.

I noted before the LSU game that we should run some no-huddle to prevent LSU from having D-Line substitutions. We didn't. MSU did that against us with moderate success moving the ball but missing a FG. Also, if we know our kickers couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from 10 yards away, why don't we go for it on 4th more often? Speaking of which, twice we got stuffed on 3rd or 4th and short. One time, our starting center ends up off to the side of the play - standing up - on a dive. Why isn't he on the ground or pushing someone off the ball? The second time, on 4th and inches, despite the fact that we have three excellent backs weighing between about 230 and 260, we call a QB sneak with our tall, lanky QB that may possibly weigh 200 pounds soaking wet. Really?

No TDs against LSU, no effective creativity. Playing not-to-lose instead of playing to win. Last year against the Barn, we scored a whopping 3 points in the second half - playing not to lose.

The whole offensive coordinator debate has been somewhat polarizing with traditionalist fans citing the historic record with McElwain and others like me pointing to lack of production in crunch time in too many big games. I do think we are at least a little bit too conservative on offense and way too predictable. For example, going no huddle would prevent some substitutions that may wear out defenses more. We need to a more aggressive predatory attitude on offense. We can't just say we are going to run it down their throats and hope it happens. There are ways to achieve that end when they stack the box. Lastly, when we have someone down, we don't need to let them back up. We need to stand on their throats.

How will we game plan for Auburn? Will we be super-conservative again? It better not come down to field goals. What if Arky beats LSU and we somehow win a tie-breaker? Have y'all seen Georgia play lately? Too conservative could be a real problem there as well.

Do I think anything is going to change? Probably not. But it should. We have alot more talent on this offense than just Trent and Marquise and we don't roll it out often enough.

PS - we need to go no-huddle against Auburn often, and we need to spread the ball around more incorporating some short, fast-tempo passes on slants to WRs and backs out of the backfield. Loosen up the D and THEN pound the rock.

Your Right On !

I'd like to see some other ends in the game to see how they can catch the ball too. The other team has seen all our normal stuff and is ready for it.

Let's take some lessons from other creative fast teams.. Oregon, Boise State come to mind.

Guess we never learned our Utah lesson ! Ouch.

I've thought all year that our offensive playcalling has been elementary and conservative. Our FG problems are a thing of beauty, but we have to kick them and hope they get out of their funk.

As for the call last night where we run our huge powerful QB instead of our heisman hopeful RB makes great sense.

But, we won last night and have a chance to play in a BCS bowl and maybe even the NC

I'm sorry, but it's threads like these that make me realize just how spoiled a fan base we've become, and ironically how nothing has really changed from the Shula days.

Is this not what a fan Forum is for; that is, to discuss amongst ourselves areas where there is room for improvement? It makes us spoiled to always want to improve? Any team that doesn't always move forward and improve falls behind. It is the nature of the beast just as it is in manufacturing and business. No matter how good you are, you must ALWAYS self-analyze and finds areas of weakness and seek to improve. That's what this thread is all about. If you don't like threads like this, then don't read them. I personally think this is exactly what this Forum is for.

I agree this is what a fan forum is about, or should be at least.

As for the thread, I agree far too many times this season have our offensive play calling been questionable. Especially on the creative aspect. We're alabama so we don't wow people with crazy plays or lots of gimmicks but it's pretty bad when even the most average arm chair quarterback can predict what our next play(s) are going to be based on what happens on 1st down. Teams stack the box on us and we go into a shell. This is nothing new and has been the norm for several years. It just gets frustrating at times. Such is Alabama football. RTR

Never said you couldn't make posts like these, by all means armchair coach your heart out. Far be it for me to stop you. I'm only merely putting in my two cents. I believe I have just as much right to do so as you.

well.. my opinion is this... i don't like the whole "we're a spoiled fan base" rationale. the same thing has been said all over the gator forums ever since they lost to bama, in attempt to reign in expectations for the season and keep the bashing of the new staff at bay. but the way i see it is, why should fans NOT expect their team to win? at the point that we've become accepting of losses or mediocre play-calling, we've become auburn fans. i think when you have the highest paid coach and coaching staff in college football, you SHOULD expect to win and you should certainly be entitled to question coaching decisions. Apparently, you missed my whole about continuous improvement. It's fundamental and requisite for any top-tier organization to achieve and maintain excellence no matter what field you're in. There is nothing "spoiled" about wanting and expecting excellence for Alabama football and the time to assess and analyze is before trends and habits become detrimental. When strategies become predictable and begin to lose efficacy, a top-tier organization will do the hard work and unemotionally self-assess without prejudice or condition. Any organization that does not continously improve falls behind, because there is no such thing as standing pat. There is always somebody else willing to self-assess and challenge all of their trends. That is what it takes to be excellent.

There's times when you lose. It happens, unfortunately. We can pump out our chests as much as we like and say "We're Alabama, we're not supposed to lose!" but it's GOING to happen from time to time. Now, if we're losing 4...5...6 games a season, then yes we all should speak up. But the worst season we've had since 2007 has been a 3 loss season, and that was with what? Nine or ten new starters on defense? I'm just trying to be realistic here and keep things in perspective. In no way shape or form does that insinuate that I'm being like an Auburn fan. Let's be thankful we have the amazing coaching staff we do instead of sitting around speaking as if we know how to run their offense any better than they do. They're the ones making the big bucks, and they're doing a damn good job earning it.

All that is fine and dandy. My point is, when has it become YOUR job to do all this analyzing. Because honestly, and don't take this the wrong way, I trust McElwain's assessment of our offense and how to run it far more than I trust yours.

I don't think it's being spoiled when fans get frustrated by poor decisions by coaches, or poor execution by players. Spoiled is when you think you are entitled to have your team win every game, like they are somehow "owed" a win or "deserve" to win. You have to go out and earn every victory.

Best Class of 2012 Kicking Prospect: ADAM GRIFFITH (Calhoun H.S. – GA) Adam may be the most talented kicker that I have ever seen. He has big time leg and hits an absolutely huge ball. His field goals come off his foot like a rocket. His kickoffs are tops in the nation. Adam hit one wind-aided kickoff 90 plus yards with 4.40 second hang time. No one can match his talent.--Chris Sailer

Everyone knows our kicking game is in bad shape, no secret there. Trent is a "rented mule".....well, I guess any running back that gets that many carries and yards is a "rented mule" :headscratch:......Hes a running back, and i suspect if he was asked...hed prefer to touch the ball on every play. And I guess I would fall more into the "ttraditionalist" view on the playcalling. My opinion being based on the overall win / loss record.....one cant deny the numbers. I suppose one can question the playcalling all day but the numbers are there to support whats being done works. That being said, I do agree with the predictability of the playcalls......On more than one series, I called more than two plays in a row before the snap during the MSU game and was dead on. Some of those plays resulted in good gains and some didnt. My opinion is Sabans plan is to "most of the time" just do what you do and see if they can stop you. I am of the opinion that Bama has a wealth of offensive talent that is being left on the sideline and never given an opportunity during gametime. Ill say this as my last 2 cents worth......If Saban took the same approach with his offense on complexity and flexibility....as he does with the defense..........I dont think anyone.....and i mean anyone could beat us.

The one glaring thing i see that is wrong with the offense is that Aj doeant seem to be allowed much freedom to open up and throw the ball around. We played very conservative with him for the first half of the year and i think we all can agree that he seemed to get rustier with his long throws as time went on. The second half of the tenn game shows you whay he's capable of. Parts of last nights game as well. But when it really counts it seems that our coaches are a bit timid to lean on him. He is going to throw some picks and yes hes young... but you havr to let your qb play. You can only make a race horse trot for so long before he wont feel comfortable running anymore. Jm2c
