OK - I put up wrong snapshot stat on FGs - we were actually, 2 for the last 8 on FGs at one point yesterday. We are 3 for 9 in the last two games. No matter how you slice it, it's pretty darn crappy. What's worse is that it even matters at all. Our offense continues to lack creativity. I watched the game last night with my Florida-fan buddy. He commented several times about our offensive play-calling and how predictable it is. He also commented on riding Trent like a rented mule and that defenses simply stack up the box. He also noted how un-dominating our O-Line seems compared to when we spanked his Gators the last few years.
I noted before the LSU game that we should run some no-huddle to prevent LSU from having D-Line substitutions. We didn't. MSU did that against us with moderate success moving the ball but missing a FG. Also, if we know our kickers couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from 10 yards away, why don't we go for it on 4th more often? Speaking of which, twice we got stuffed on 3rd or 4th and short. One time, our starting center ends up off to the side of the play - standing up - on a dive. Why isn't he on the ground or pushing someone off the ball? The second time, on 4th and inches, despite the fact that we have three excellent backs weighing between about 230 and 260, we call a QB sneak with our tall, lanky QB that may possibly weigh 200 pounds soaking wet. Really?
No TDs against LSU, no effective creativity. Playing not-to-lose instead of playing to win. Last year against the Barn, we scored a whopping 3 points in the second half - playing not to lose.
The whole offensive coordinator debate has been somewhat polarizing with traditionalist fans citing the historic record with McElwain and others like me pointing to lack of production in crunch time in too many big games. I do think we are at least a little bit too conservative on offense and way too predictable. For example, going no huddle would prevent some substitutions that may wear out defenses more. We need to a more aggressive predatory attitude on offense. We can't just say we are going to run it down their throats and hope it happens. There are ways to achieve that end when they stack the box. Lastly, when we have someone down, we don't need to let them back up. We need to stand on their throats.
How will we game plan for Auburn? Will we be super-conservative again? It better not come down to field goals. What if Arky beats LSU and we somehow win a tie-breaker? Have y'all seen Georgia play lately? Too conservative could be a real problem there as well.
Do I think anything is going to change? Probably not. But it should. We have alot more talent on this offense than just Trent and Marquise and we don't roll it out often enough.
PS - we need to go no-huddle against Auburn often, and we need to spread the ball around more incorporating some short, fast-tempo passes on slants to WRs and backs out of the backfield. Loosen up the D and THEN pound the rock.
