🏈 You’re The Head Coach, What Changes Do YOU Make?

Ten Bears called last night just to check on my health. His take was Byrne had sound logic on the hire, but he didn't consider the regional fit enough. He believes Kalen will not have great success in the SEC. Firing him now is not the way to go but start today as though you will this time next year. Don't add more contract buyout money for assistant coaches unless it is clear those on staff have to go now. Paying 900k per month until Kalen is paid in full (or he gets another job to offset that 900k is a killer but will be required. Blowing up the roster at the end of next year will be another tall order but it's going to happen anyway. Suggest I accept a 7-5 year in 26 and it could be worse.

Not sure he's not correct.

I will be optimistic. Never lose that. Already looking forward to 2026...football

Absolutely shouldn't be talk of extending contract. AD should hold KDs feet to fire. Like Mal did to Shula. Its obvious that there problems.
Get this shit fixed...

Well, you and I had a great ride with Coach Bryant, Coach Stallings, and Nick. Great times for sure. This mess can't be fixed due to the way players can leave and will for another dollar. It will be year to year with some losing seasons then a good year. At some point those high dollar folks are going to say F it and keep their money. It's not just Bama but everybody except those will big dollars.

Hell, just switch to FCS level and get it on. I love watching Montana State play ball. They have a white kid at RB that Kalen needs to call yesterday. He can run backwards faster than anybody we have. I think they play Monday night on ESPN. Give them a look.

First:

Portal Work with Morgan, find me some talented OL/DL options a RB and a starting LB. I think you probably need a starting Guard and Center looks like Brailsford is likely gone since we're already pursuing some transfer center options. I think OL and DL are the BIGGEST and most important spots where we need to spend $$ and find older, veteran replacements guys with good football IQ.

Coleman is intriguing, we will not be the highest bidder. Texas and TAMU will be much higher so how much of a discount does he give Nix and friends he has here over the $$? If our QB situation is in flux also (TY getting drafted or staying) may also have a factor here, he probably wants to play with a talented QB so he can push his draft stock.

Anyways, outside of the starters we will need to try to find, we probably need 5-10 back-ups and fill-in players that can try to work for playing time, probably a few RS Freshman or Sophmores to fill the gaps, here we can take some more chances and really need to try to scout diamonds in the rough.

Second:

I'd review film for the entire year and dissect what went wrong in all the games, even the ones we won by double digits. I'd mark down good and bad things and notes. I'd bring up plays and have discussions with coaches and position coaches all the way down to assistants/grad assistants. I'd make everyone go over the tapes and learn how to read and make adjustments off of what we were seeing and then I'd take interviews with position coaches and go over why they didn't adjust or what they were seeing and why nothing changed during the year or why things did change and what good things they did. Afterwards, I'd call in the ones I didn't feel comfortable with their answers or performance through the year explained it all.

I'd relieve Kaplovic, Nunez and Gillespie of their positions and look for replacements in those areas.

OL:

Huff (Seahawks) - Throw the bag at him if you can
Bob Bostad (Indiana) - Throw the bag at him if you can he runs their O-line and Run game coordinator give him the same spot here but an increased role and more $$

ST:

Thomas Sheffield (Hawaii) - Special Teams Coordinator (Has a good eye for talent and development as well). Freshman Punter avg 46+ yards per punt and Senior Kicker @ 93% field goal percentage shows both growth and ability to spot talent. Punt return and kick returns this year aren't great but in 2024 he average 14.5 yards per punt return. He's capable of making it work in that department as well.
Grant Cain (Indiana) - One of the top FG kickers, one of the best Punt Return averages 16 yards per return his punting stats are fairly average though (39.9 avg)

Special teams is tough, so many intangibles and pieces here it's hard to pinpoint exact fits but these are two I think would work fine plug and play.

RB:

James Montgomery (Boise State) - I'd throw the bag at this man if I could, he's young, smart, capable of developing talent and knows how to get a lot out of his backs. (Yes he coached Ashton Jeanty)
Darian Hagan (SDSU) - Previously at Colorado, has consistent rushing yards. He's used to doing a workhorse back and swapping so can do either.
Stan Drayton (Penn State) - Helped develop Ezekiel Elliot and Bijan Robinson previously, Has some strong backs he's developed through the years and consistency is key here he's getting consistent running. With Franklin leaving and the change of guard, I'd snatch him up if possible if the man from Boise State says no. Hagan would be my 3rd choice.

3rd:

I would have assistants pour through tape/packages for the players to study mistakes and things they did good to better increase football IQ in the building. I would want to bring in people to help better with this also, maybe speakers or coaches or NFL guys to build more on the culture that we aren't going to sit idle, we're going to develop and push ourselves to be better.

I'd get ready for Spring practice and hopefully have a few battles to deal with and I'd keep a sense of urgency. I'd replay the Indiana Highlight video of them scoring on us over and over again and us failing to do anything until the players get sick of it.
Where's your OC options? Can Grubb. Worst OC Bama has had in 20 years.

I think it's entirely possible as well. We were a handful of plays away this year from having that type of season. Didn't blow out or dominate anyone really outside of G5 / FCS teams.

I think we got way more mileage out of #15 than we could expect. The throws he was making (designed by this OC) were NFL type throws. While it looked great and #15 was riding that wave, I thought man this isn't going to last for 12 games. Running for 2 yards over and over and then expecting the QB to hit pass after pass isn't a great plan. We did it anyway and had a great year. 11 wins is a great year.

Now we wait until September to learn what think we know today. I went to Home Depot today and got a couple of bricks if you know what I mean.

We have seen some incredible dominate bama football for our time...
More to come. ..... hope we live long enough to see another great run

Everyone knows that DeBoer will not fire Grubb but Seattle went from 28th in league in rushing with Grubb to 11th this year without him. Total offense went from 14th to 8th. The difference in numbers aren’t staggering. Seattle rushing for about 40 more yards this year but ypc is same. The threat of a running game and the willingness to call running plays also a factor. As bad as we looked rushing, there were games we just gave up after < 10 carries.

Also went from 18th in league in PPG to 3rd.

I don’t think the rushing problem is necessarily the offensive coordinator.

I’m starting to think it might be more of a personnel issue.

In CKD last season at Washington, he and Grubb had a 1200 yard rusher.

They, the coaches, can’t make the offensive line open holes.

Seattle also went from middle road nfl team...to #1 in nfc
Anybody that believes their is no correlation...lisnt being objective

I mean, look at the running back room. No one seemed to be able to take over. I think Miller had a whole 500 yards rushing this season and he was the leading rusher.

It’s a personnel problem more than anything.

Bama doesn't have a RB in that room. Unless these two freshmen are the real deal, then the portal is so important for 26 at RB. Kalen and staff will have to pay more money than they really want but it has to happen. That room was the worst crew of RB's I have ever seen at Alabama. That was a total clusterfeck of evaluations by Nick and Kalen.

I think it’s a combination of personnel and the offensive scheme just absolutely sucks. It has proven to suck in Seattle and now here.

I think it works but takes the right personnel

The 104 rushing yards per game this season is the lowest in DeBoers career as either a HC or OC (21 seasons). While on the surface, its a major concern, the numbers over his career (which I've pulled) show he strives for a respectable running game and it's an area that usually trends uward (aka improves) over his tenure. Using 1 season of Grubb being the OC in Seattle to make a blanket statement on the overall potential and success of the run game (which I've seen numerous times this season) is just plain shortsighted. It's cherry picking and nothing more. Reminds me of when fans (some here) were wetting themselves when Saban brought Sark back to be OC after his little stint with the Falcons and were convinced Bama was doomed.

As stated many times, maybe the run game gets fixed (decisions must be made, it won't fix itself), maybe it won't... but DeBoer's (long) history tends to point that it will and it certainly shows that he sees the importance of it.

How can you not correlate to some extent the lack of a run game at Seattle and Alabama in back to back years? The one common factor is Ryan Grubb. Seattle did a complete 180 this year after he left. He was also canned after 1 year in Seattle so obviously they thought he was at fault somewhat. Also, who that watched this year play out thinks this guy has any clue what he’s doing? The play calling is absolutely horrendous at times and seems to have no purpose at all.

Yeah that matches with what I'm saying. From what I see, his offense is more about technique than power which can work if you have the personnel capable of making it work. My biggest issue is it seems that he didn't adjust his scheme very well to the current personnel. With the portal by this year he should be able to have the pieces he needs to run his scheme imo so if he can't make it work better in year 3 then I'd have real questions of will it ever work in the sec. Not talking about the number of games won just having a more balanced offense.

Coaches who are more scheme oriented, like Grubb, should be more selective of their jobs, be upfront that their scheme is going to be difficult to run with current personnel, or be willing/able to adapt better to current personnel.

With DeBoer's success at multiple stops I thought he was more adapt oriented than what I've currently seen during his time at bama. He hasn't done bad, numbers wise, it's just the games where they are annihilated that really leave fans like me with a bad taste imo. I don't care for Womack's scheme on D. I prefer power pro style football on O, but winning makes those preferences not as important. I don't think many sane fans expected a Saban like dynasty from him, though it's still possible, but i think most expected bama to still compete well every game.
