šŸˆ You’re The Head Coach, What Changes Do YOU Make?

How can you not correlate to some extent the lack of a run game at Seattle and Alabama in back to back years? The one common factor is Ryan Grubb. Seattle did a complete 180 this year after he left. He was also canned after 1 year in Seattle so obviously they thought he was at fault somewhat. Also, who that watched this year play out thinks this guy has any clue what he’s doing? The play calling is absolutely horrendous at times and seems to have no purpose at all.

I think you're conflating "not running the ball enough" with "can't run the ball". McDonald wanted, from what I understand, to run the ball more often. He made the change. But there seems to be this notion out there that the Seahawks couldn't run it under Grubb. That's false. In fact, their YPC was slightly higher under Grubb than it was this season under Kubiak.

And I'll give you that Grubb had his struggles this season... but what SEC OC doesn't have them at times? And it's certainly worth adding that they were limited because of certain issues, and one can argue how much those issues were their own fault (other than injuries). But most all of the OL and RB contributors (which turned out to be the weakness of the offense) were recruits from the previous staff, for a previous scheme (speaking mostly of the OL). And if you want to think Grubb is a trash coach with no clue, that's fine. But the fact is, he's a good OC. Very well respected by his peers. That doesn't automatically mean he'll ultimately be a success here (same for DeBoer)... but the guy is a good coach.

I am not a big fan of Grubb and what he has brought to Bama. I saw this post on another site about the reason Grubb was fired last year.

Well, as to what he’s missing as a playcaller, I’ll just post a few quotes from Mike Macdonald all from right after when he fired Grubb. I think it all will make total sense and explain a lot.

"We don't want to reinvent our offense every week so we have to have a core identity. We're going to be a physical unit. We're going to run the football and we want to have answers for the QB and keep it consistent for him".

ā€œdon't randomly call plays, understand playcallingā€

"We need to be really good at core concepts, fundamentals… We have to have core identity, not randomly choose what looks interesting on the call sheet.ā€

ā€œWe want our offense to be a physical unit and dictate terms of the defense, play complementary football and get the ball to our playmakers frequently and in space, and let our quarterback play fast. So we just decided to go in a different direction.ā€

… the Seahawks are ranked 8th in total offense up from 18th under Grubb. They are 10th in rushing this year, up from 29th.

Lost in it all is Seattle got better players too and that too will help a team improve
