🏈 You're Head Coach. What do you do next?

I dont think there is much anyone could do. We have heard for months that we really dont have a great qb. We have known for awhile that our kicker is inconsistant. Our wr's are all new and our secondary is inexperienced. Fluke plays happen in games. Last night was just one of those nights where ladyluck was not on our side. And as bad as we hate to admit it; we will not win every game every year. Think back to the years between Stallings and Nick. It all goes in cycles. One of these years; it will be the SEC east that dominates. All this being said; last night Alabama could have rolled over and quit, but they didnt. Our schedule allows us to have a loss and still be in the playoffs. If Im the coach, I pat them on the back and ask them if they are up to the challenge and I ask myself and the other coaches if they are up to the challenge of putting our team in the best possible position to run the table.

Watch film as usual, have player meetings as usual, correct mistakes, emphasize ball security on special teams. Get back to work, start preparing for the next game as usual.

I know this won't go over well for those who are in panic mode, but there are no sweeping changes to be made in our team/staff that will correct all the wrongs they think they see and guarantee that Bama blows away everyone left on our schedule. As Bear used to say, you dance with the one you brung.

Business as usual. I dig it.

I had also not heard that Bear quote. I like it.

Big changes would be a disaster. You refocus your efforts. Everybody is screaming doom and gloom but there is too much football left to play. Alabama is no longer the target. The goal is still the SEC West. The sky is NOT falling.

Really focus on WHO the qb should be. Hear that Coker was really sick last night? (couldn't have been sicker than I am just now).. But Next week, I would concentrate on the QB that gives Bama the best chance of running the table regardless of Class Status. If Coker is it, then give him all the help in the world (After watching last night, I don't see it) If it be Bateman, then work him and don't pull him after one INT. (but, if Barnett is the answer for the future, I toss the remainder of the year and give him every opp for experience.) Next year the D will not have the front 7 that is available this year.. so the O will need to stand up. BUT these are just the butt hurt ramblings of a heart sick fan...

All of the teams goals are still on the table. Win the division, win the conference, make the CFP, win a Natty. Last night made it a little tougher, but it can be done. Saban. Knew what we had at QB and he just hoped that it wouldn't be the play of the QB that would put us behind the 8 ball. Last night it was ball security on special teams that did the team in from the beginning.
I didn't understand the move of Bateman to start the game, but after hearing the presser. It sounded like the plan was to stress to their defense to respect the QB run. The only problem was, Bateman didn't run it. Now this leads me to go back and stress once again about jumping to these "read option" QB runs. I said several weeks ago that the read option requires countless hours of "reading" the proper man, getting the meshpoint correct, etc. Now several members wanted to exclaim that they knew more than me and said it was so much easier than that and that we "ran it all the time." So now, what do we say about last night and the fact that Bateman repeatedly went around the end carrying out a fake 10-15 yards down the field UNTOUCHED?? Did Bateman simply misread it due to the lack of true experience in running it, was it called from the sideline, give or keep, or was Bateman chickenshit??!!! I say it was misread due to inexperience!

I think you step in and tell Kiffin to feed Henry more and to get Drake the ball in space. Neither have been stopped, so why not get them the ball?

You can't really work on not fumbling, as you can only show a guy how to hold the ball. The only thing g I would teach our defensive backs is to not bite and allow the scraping backers make a play. Humphrey doesn't bite and sticks with the receiver, we give up a first down, not six points.

Move Bateman to the bottom of the QB list. The read option keeper was there, he was told to run it, he didn't run it. He had his chance. Make him work his way back up.

If Cornwell is a player and is doing the things he needs to do to get out of the dog house, let him out and decide who is our #2 QB. If BB is our best choice, burn the shirt.

The most difficult part is changing blocking and twists in the initial call. In simple terms, the QB puts the ball out for the RB to take. Depending on what the key read does (are you reading the DT or the DE?), you hand it off or keep it and proceed to the next read. Depending on what that read does, you pitch or keep or look for the pass. It's simple, but it's complex, and you have to do it with 300 lb people trying to take your head off.

In this day of college football you simply have to be good at the QB position. A good QB covers a multitude of sins. Three of our five turnovers were interceptions. Days are gone where we can have a "dominating" defense, good running game and be average or worse at QB. Those days are gone. If we would have been efficient at QB last night we win that game. Despite the the Drake and Stewart turnovers. You hear it in the NFL and it is the same on the college level. It is a QB driven league. Until we get solid at the QB position we are going to struggle to win games against good teams.
