šŸˆ You guys into an "official" talk about Missiouri thread? Seems like as good of a time as any.

Thanks for the invite and congrats on your championship season!

One quick correction, Mizzou did not used to be SMSU and change to MSU. That is Missouri State, in Springfield MO, which used to be Southwest Missouri State U (SMSU).

We are extremely excited to join the SEC. And so far the SEC has given us some pretty good luck. Since announcing the switch our football team went undefeated the rest of the season, our basketball team is 21-2 and ranked #4, and we just landed one of the top football recruits in the nation (DGB). We realize we have our work cut out for us but the alumni, fans and university are all willing to make the investments to bring us up to SEC standards.

Just a brief history. Mizzou does have a strong football tradition but for the most part that is ancient history. We went through a brutal two decade-long spell of not just bad football, but embarrassingly inept football. During that period, the administration was not just apathetic about football, and sports in general, but most will say they were downright hostile to athletics. Most of the blame goes to a chancellor they hired from Berkeley CA who wanted to make Mizzou into some sort of psuedo ivy league school and looked down upon sports.

We have slowly made our way back to respectability in no small part due to HC Gary Pinkle. Despite losing the blue chip recruits to Big 12 foes like Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and aTm he has done an excellent job finding the diamonds in the rough and building the program from the bottom up.

It will be interesting to see how we make the transition from the offensive minded, spread dominated Big 12 to the defensive oriented SEC. It helps that we're in the East which is down a little but, but I'm cautiously optimistic about our chances. Either way, I'm extremely excited and can't wait for the Tide to roll into Columbia next fall!

I wasn't meaning on par with Alabama and LSU this year. I was meaning if you look at Vandy and Kentucky year in and year out they're not very good that's what I was meaning. It would be stupid for anybody to think Mizzou or aTm is going to be on par with Alabama and LSU right off the bat.

Welcome aboard.

I'm not sure how to predict exactly where Missouri will fall in the SEC. For comparison sake though, recent games against SEC teams are: 2005 beat South Carolina 38-31. 2006 beat Ole Miss 34-7. 2007 beat Ole Miss 38-25 and Arkansas 38-7. Going back to 2003, we did lose to Arkansas 27-14. I don't think I missed any.

welcome to the SEC, Mizzou. i must admit i don't know much about Mizzou. my only experience with them was being in Troy the night they lost that one while they were ranked. that was an unbelievable game.

Hello from another Mizzou fan. Just to repeat what others before me have said, I don't think any of us expect to come in and take over the SEC. Personal opinion is that we will be competitive in the east. I don't see us as being Kentucky or Vanderbilt like. The change will be tough for sure. Most Mizzou fans are very happy to be a part of the SEC. This is for sure the big boy league, I think we will grow into it quite nicely over the years. Thanks for the friendly welcome. You have us at a disadvantage, most of you know nothing much about us and of course most of us know all about you. I'm just happy we were allowed in the SEC over West Virginia. I say that half joking as I don't believe they were ever seriously considered.

Thanks everyone for the welcome. Really can't tell you how excited we are to be joining the best football conference in the nation and to be able to host teams like Alabama or Georgia and so on. Those are the 2 home games I'm most looking forward to. For the Georgia game, feel free to tell me I'm wrong, but I think we have a chance to pull an upset, and it would be an upset. But we get them early in the season before the rigors of the SEC has hit us. We get them at home. And we get them for our first home SEC game, so our fanbase will be energized and the atmosphere should be electric. For the Alabama game, from everything I've heard, I think I'm just as interested in meeting the Alabama fans as I am in the game itself. The game will also give us a clear idea of what it takes to play at the highest level of the SEC.

Regarding UGA, getting them early is the best thing for you. They have been given hell by far less talented South Carolina teams even in the Gamecocks worst years. That game is always early....before this year.

Greetings from MO! Can't view video at work to refresh memory, but I believe that was the 2010 Oklahoma game OU was ranked #1, first time Gameday made it to campus. When the goalposts are dropped, they are carried to Harpo's (Columbia's most famous watering hole). I don't believe the Wrestling situation has been figured out yet. With our departure to the SEC, that leaves only 3 wrestling programs in the Big 12. The popular opinion is that there will be "regional alliances" formed. Most likely including Mizzou, the Big 12 schools and a smattering of other schools. It will not be a conference, but more like the Collegiate Hockey set up.

The way you worded something here makes me pause a second.

"When the goalposts are dropped, they are carried..."

Dropped, versus torn down? When you say dropped, I think there is a system in place where they can be removed from their foundation. We see stadiums with posts that drop down much like the breakaway basketball goals. Are your's set up that way and then they are removed?

Harpo's...and I immediately think of Oprah's production company. Now I need a drink.

Keep us up to date on the wrestling. It's not a sport we follow, but there are quite a few outside of football a few of us here follow diligently.

A couple other things that have been discussed elsewhere, so I apologize if its repetitive for some. Missouri actually has an all time record of something like 20-8-1 all time against SEC teams and have winning records against all SEC teams except Georgia and Kentucky, and have never played Tennessee. I suspect some of that will change in the future. From most of what I have read, it sounds like the immediate improvements to the football facilities will increase seating to just over 80,000. The basketball facilities are new and compete with most programs. From all accounts, the baseball stadium will need definite improvements. Not being a warm weather state, attendance at baseball games certainly lags most, if not all, SEC schools. I haven't really followed the softball team, so I'm unsure of their facilities but the team itself I believe finished 8th in the nation last year and is picked to win the Big 12 and 5th nationally.

I've been involved in the same conversation with a few Arkansas fans over on a friend on mine's forum. One of the things I looked at with Mizzou—I've only begun looking at football; it's the first sporting event that'll mean anything from here on out—was how they've/you've done over the last decade. There was no way to compare head to head except for a few games: five in fact. Mizzou is 4-1 in those games. You are the ONLY football program (as of Sept. of this year) that'll have a winning record vs Alabama.

You're right about winning record vs SEC teams in football, just a bit off on the numbers.

recordmissouri.jpg

If you guys were in the conference for softball this season, you would make the fourth team ranked in the top 10. Right now, USA Today's poll has you at sixth if I recall correctly.

I just saw an arial shot of the baseball stadium so it is hard to determine what condition it is in. Believe you me, ours is the same way.

Softball? I'd bet nine out of ten coaches that have visited Tuscaloosa would say our park is the nicest in the nation. In terms of capacity, attendance, etc...we've led the NCAA several times over the last decade. It's a great experience if you ever make it down in the spring.

Here's a quick snipet I just came across.

All time attendance records at Memorial/Faurot?

Look at number four.

Regarding UGA, getting them early is the best thing for you. They have been given hell by far less talented South Carolina teams even in the Gamecocks worst years. That game is always early....before this year.

Like you and Mizzou, I've unfortunately* been submersed in this USCe and UGA game far too long. I don't know if the time of the year has anything to do with the results in that game. There's an odd stigma there.

This year will be interesting though. With USCe and UGA not facing each other until the first week of October and that's in Cola this season. UGA is going to be coming off their UT week.

One thing that does strike me as something to watch is the number of times UGA has been west of the Mississippi over the last four or five decades. During the regular season, they are not a team that travels. While this IS a conference game, it's going to have the feel of a bigger OOC game than it will the tradition east vs west SEC game.

*not saying submersed in Mizzou sports in a bad thing; I wouldn't know.

Interesting point and one I have heard brought up before when UGA made a visit to Tempe a couple of years ago.

It is a weird stigma in that game (The USCe/UGA game). The only UGA-USCe game I have attended was in Columbia during the Brad Scott era. If I recall correctly, USCe won only one or two games that season but gave UGA all they wanted and that was with a team that was stacked with talent for the Leg Humpers.

One thing for the Mizzou faithful....USCe is actually pretty neat experience from the stadium perspective. It's not in the best of areas and the tailgating is kind of odd but I don't think there is a bad seat in Williams Brice. I am glad I had an opportunity to see a game there.

Pretty much hit it on the head as to why I feel this game is ripe for an upset. It may have that feel for UGA but it will be just the opposite for Mizzou. UGA will certainly be a favorite, but if I had to pull an upset out of our conference schedule that would be it. I have a hard time putting my finger on the UF game. It is there so I expect that to be a tough game for us to pull an upset, but UF was down last year. Any insight about what to expect from UF?

Bad word choice on my part. I don't believe they are the "retractable" goal posts you are referring to though (although, I know about the goal posts you are talking about). The wrestling team is pretty decent this year, 12-3 and ranked 13. They beat #10 Oklahoma on Sunday. I recently saw posted that all of Mizzou's winter sports teams (excluding women's hoops) is currently ranked in the top 25 in their respective sports. I know these sports are not Football, but just show that we are bringing a well rounded athletic program to the conference.

I the game where they were slight favorites over AZ St. is the game where that came up, it was reality the next season when they traveled to Stillwater. That game to Tempe was right before their "Black Out" game of 2008. They won the game in '08, Okie St. killed them in '09.

Just to add something to that USEe vs UGA series. You mention the Brad Scott era. That was the period where they won one game in two seasons. Still, UGA was only able to beat them by two touchdowns in both games. It's those six to eight win teams that give UGA fits when they play the 'Cocks. Those seem to be the two to three point games.

Agreed on the last part. Nice stadium. I still recall getting out of the RV in 2005 and looking across the fair parking lot at the pens for the pigs and cows. It'd still prefer a tailgate with grass under my feet versus a parking lot. You can do that EVERYWHERE but Cola.

A better team, defensively, than last year in terms of results.

As a fan, I'd call it your first ROAD game, SEC style. I don't mean that as a knock on Big12 road games. Not in the least.

However, with UF? This is a different animal.

I was looking over the weekend you have Florida in Gainesville. That weekend we play LSU in BR. Because of the contract negotiations last season the game this year will be at night on ESPN. So, I'm guessing that'll leave you guys playing at 3:30 on CBS. Now, that won't be "The Swamp" like it is at night. But, it'll be a true swamp in terms of climate. That's the reason I put it as a tougher contest than your trip to Cola to face the 'Cocks.

Here's a twist for you.

UGA has a lot to prove right now in the eyes of a lot of SEC fans. So, the possibility of them losing when they visit Mizzou isn't that far of a stretch of our collective imaginations.

On the other hand, and I may stand with very few on this, I think your trip to Knoxville has as much of a possibility as the game with UGA: but with UT winning this one. That game follows Florida, is in Neyland, and looks like the night game that weekend.

We have a small issue with goal posts around these parts. It's the subject of another thread...believe you me, there are a few laughing right now thinking back to some of the young Internet punks in 2005.

Well rounded program?

As those here will attest, heck anyone I've talked to will as well, the first thing I looked at with the expansion talk was TV market. Then recruiting area.

When it came to your overall program, I thought about your academics first believe it or not. Then it went to football, softball (due to the season now,) basketball, baseball...and on down the line.

I don't take it as a knock. I understand that traveling to the Florida's, Alabama's and Tennessee's is a different animal than going to Manhatten, Lawrence or Ames. That is one of the challenges that makes the move to the SEC so exciting for Mizzou fans.

I hear what you're saying about the UT game, it could potentially be a trap game for Mizzou coming off of the UF game. I will be disappointed if Mizzou loses that game though. I understand UT's history and the difficulty of playing on the road in the SEC, but I also have a hard time believing that UT will be that much improved over last year. Didn't they only win 1 conference game and that was in overtime against Vandy? Certainly anything is possible, and being at UT, coming off the UF game and being a night game will make it a difficult game for Mizzou, but if I were forced to, I think I still take Mizzou in that game.

Totally agree with the TV market. Anyone who doesn't believe that was priority #1 is kidding themselves. Recruiting area.......will be interesting to see how the move plays out with in state (MO) kids. There will always be decent amount of kids in the Top 10 (of Missouri) that go to Mizzou because they are dyed-in-the-wool Tigers. Particularly in the St. Louis region, we have a tendency to lose too many kids (in my opinion) to Big 10 schools. My hope is that more in state blue chippers (not that Mo produces a ton), will go the best of both worlds route, play for the home school, now against the best in the land (SEC).

The addition of Texas A&M will have a larger impact in terms of recruiting area obviously. Missouri will produce a number of recruits (I think Alabama was in on a couple, though I suspect Alabama wasn't pursuing them hard) but we don't produce the depth or numbers of recruits. I have no doubt that people smarter than me determined that expanding the SEC footprint into an untapped state like Missouri financially is worth the while as far as the TV market is concerned. St. Louis will always have the Cardinals and Kansas City the Chiefs, but support for those teams is not to the exclusion of Mizzou.
