Leading Off

  • Alabama and Binghamton will meet for the first time in history when the two programs match up on Friday afternoon at Sewell-Thomas Stadium to begin a three-game weekend series.
  • The Crimson Tide has squared off with only two of the current eight member teams that make up the America East Conference. Alabama holds a 1-1 record against Maine and a 4-0 mark against Stony Brook. The Tide's most recent meeting with an AEC opponent came on March 19, 2019, with UA posting a dominant 16-0 win over Maine at The Joe.
  • The Crimson Tide's rotation will once again feature Garrett McMillan, Antoine Jean and Grayson Hitt. McMillan, a right-hander, will open the series on Friday followed by lefties Jean and Hitt on Saturday and Sunday, respectively,
  • Binghamton will look to left-hander Thomas Babalis for the start in game one. The junior will be followed by sophomore righty John Lumpinski on Saturday, with right-hander Ryan Bryggman, a junior, getting the start on getaway day.

About Alabama

  • Alabama enters the final weekend of non-conference series action having gone 3-1 over the last week. The Crimson Tide swept Murray State last weekend at The Joe before falling to North Alabama on Wednesday afternoon.
  • UA suffered a 9-5 loss to North Alabama on Wednesday. The Lions got out front early with two runs in the first and three in the second. UNA added one apiece in the third and fifth with a two-run seventh on the way to the win.
  • Alabama chipped away at the lead with solo home runs in the second, third and fifth innings while adding two runs in the ninth as part of a late rally but could get no closer than a 9-5 final.
  • The Tide's solo home runs came from Zane Denton, Owen Diodati and Jim Jarvis. Diodati finished his day with a team-high tying three hits while adding a run and two RBI. Matching Diodati in hits was Tommy Seidl who went 3-for-5 with a double and one run scored.
  • Alabama came away with a 5-1 win over Murray State last Friday.
  • Garrett McMillan was brilliant in his third start of the season, picking up the win. McMillan struck out a career-high and Tide season-high tying seven across 6.0 innings of work. The junior scattered three hits and did not issue a walk before handing it over to Dylan Ray. The Tide reliever entered for the final 3.0 frames, allowing one run on one hit while striking seven of the 10 batters he faced for the save.
  • Alabama's bats produced 11 hits on the way to five runs of support for McMillan and Ray. Tommy Seidl and Andrew Pinckney led the offense, each contributing 3-for-4 efforts. Seidl homered and added an RBI to go with a pair of runs, while Pinckney recorded his first triple of the season and led the Tide with a career-high tying three runs scored.
  • The Tide leaned on the pitching staff for a second straight game to secure a 6-1 series-clinching win over Murray State last Saturday. Antoine Jean was solid in the start, contributing 4.1 innings of work for the Tide. Jean allowed one run on three hits and two walks with a season-high five strikeouts.
  • UA's bullpen then took over, retiring 15 in a row across the final 4.2 innings. That number included a pair of strikeouts from Hunter Furtado with the bases loaded in the fifth to shut down the Murray State rally in what was a 2-1 ballgame at that point. Furtado proceeded to throw 3.2 scoreless, hitless frames with three strikeouts for the win. Hunter Hoopes was next, retiring three straight in the ninth to send the Tide home with the win.
  • Eight of the nine starters on offense recorded at least one hit, led by Jarvis' 3-for-3 effort. The shortstop added a team-high two runs, a walk and a pair of stolen bases to his line.
  • The Crimson Tide stalled a late rally by the Racers to secure the 5-4 win on Sunday for the series sweep. Alabama got on the board early with two in the first. The Racers came right back with three runs in the third to gain the lead before the Tide matched them at three apiece with one run in the home half of the fourth.
  • Alabama added a pair in the bottom of the sixth thanks to an Eric Foggo two-run home run. Both teams then went scoreless until the ninth. Murray State was able to cut the lead to one and had the tying and go-ahead runners on base with two down, but Hoopes got a flyout to end the ballgame in Alabama's favor.
  • Hoopes picked up his second save of the season with 0.2 an inning that included a huge strikeout after entering from the bullpen with a 3-0 count on the batter. The right-hander battled back for the K before getting the final out one batter later. Brock Guffey earned the win on Sunday, tossing 3.0 scoreless, hitless innings with one strikeout.

Bama wins, 9-3. McMillan started and pitched well, but he should have since Binghamton is chopped liver. Hard to tell too much in a series like this, you just hope the bats get hot and carry over into SEC play. One thing that concerns me, despite the change in hitting coaches, the overall approach remains identical to last year... very aggressive with little patience or plate discipline. That won't matter much against cannon fodder like Binghamton, but it can certainly make things difficult against the looming SEC slate. I do continue to be impressed with Tommy Seidl, the grad transfer from Harvard... kid is a player. On a weather note, the high in Tuscaloosa today is 75°... tomorrow it'll be closer to 40° with more wind.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama's offense erupted for a season-high 14 runs in baseball's 14-2 win over Binghamton on Saturday afternoon. The Crimson Tide clinched the series with the victory and is now 11-5 on the season.

The Tide posted 14 runs on 14 hits to go with five walks and five hit-by-pitch as all nine starters reached base safely on Saturday. Eight of the nine starters contributed at least one hit while seven of the nine starters recorded an RBI and seven starters also added at least one run scored. The offense was led by the Tide's 3-4-5 hitters in Tommy Seidl, Zane Denton and Drew Williamson. The trio contributed seven hits, including a double and one home run, to go with eight RBI and seven runs scored.

Antoine Jean (1-1) picked up the win with a career-high tying 6.0 innings. Jean allowed one run on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts in his final start before Southeastern Conference play begins.

From Head Coach Brad Bohannon

"I'm really pleased with the effort today; it was really complete game for us. Antoine (Jean) gave us great start, was sharp out of the gate, and I really liked the way we came out. We were a little off schedule – we hit inside today and obviously the conditions weren't great. We've had a little more practice with that this year – more than we would like in our sport – but we came out hot. We scored five in the first, and sometimes when you get out front early, typically you can give some at-bats away in the middle of the game. But, in the fourth inning, we really busted it open, and I was proud of our guys. We had a lot of production up and down the lineup. Eight of the nine starters had at least one hit, we got some extra-base hits and played clean defense. It was just really a complete effort today, and I'm really, really pleased."

How It Happened

  • B1 | Jim Jarvis led the game off with a triple and came home in the next at-bat thanks to an RBI-single from Tommy Seidl. Seidl was joined on the bases by Zane Denton, who singled to put two on for Drew Williamson. The Tide first baseman took advantage of the opportunity, sending a three-run home run over the wall in right. Eric Foggo followed with a homer of his own, this one a solo shot, one out later to cap the scoring. (5-0, Alabama)
  • B2 | Dominic Tamez added one more for the Tide with a two-out RBI-single. Tamez brought Denton in, who reached with a one-out walk before moving into scoring position on a wild pitch (6-0, Alabama)
  • T3 | A leadoff walk followed by a single put a pair of runners on the corners for the Bearcats. The man from third came home in the next at-bat on a fielder's choice. (6-1, Alabama)
  • B4 | Williamson got the scoring started, delivering an RBI-double with two on to score one and move a man to third. A groundout in the next at-bat from Tamez added one more. After a walk and hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, a fielder's choice from Owen Diodati scored one and kept them loaded. Pinckney took advantage of his RBI opportunity, plating a pair on a double to right-center. After a hit by pitch loaded them up again, Seidl drew a walk to push one across before an RBI-single from Denton added one more. (14-1, Alabama)
  • T9 | A solo home run from Nick Roselli added one for the Bearcats. (14-2, Alabama)

I'll admit. I'm a selective eater. But let me tell ya, I'm not ordering Shrimp and Grits at The Joe. That's sushi bar in a power outage kind of thing.
