🏈 Why should we expect Alabama to win?

After reading all the posts regarding the upcoming Clemson game, some of which are objective and some which are not, I have just been pondering the "why" part of this.

Why, at this point, would anyone expect Alabama to look any different than they have in the last few big games?

Some factors to consider:
1. Maybe Clemson isn't THAT good?! The best team they played was Auburn in retrospect. And that was a period of time where Auburn looked like they weren't sure what a football was. The rest of their schedule is lacking a bit. The ACC is a mess... If you look at who beat who... nothing makes much sense except that Clemson is just a notch or two better than the others. Outside of the loss to Syracuse, NC State challenged Clemson mightily. Syracuse and NCState are barely bowl-worthy at this point. BUT, they both challenged Clemson in the passing game as opposed to running. How will Clemson deal with getting punched in the mouth (if you can even call it that at this point when our RBs get 20 attempts total against our in-state rival) ? Obviously Clemson is a solid team, but as far as matchups go, BAma poses a challenge for them just hat on hat. Will it be enough to keep the game close?

2. Bama has been short several linebackers. How much does this matter? I'm not sure it matters that much as the points scored by Miss St and Auburn were still not astronomical by any means. I predicted Auburn to score in the mid 20's and they did. The problem wasn't on defense even though certainly getting off the field on 3rd down would have given our offense more possessions/snaps. But to do what with? Pass too much and ineffectively?

3. Clemson doesn't have Deshaun Watson. This is a big deal especially on 3rd down. The guy saved them countless times in last year's game and this year's Clemson team doesn't have that type of factor. Their QB is, however, a better runner. And if they can do anything offensively stylewise that the barn and miss st did then you have to think that they will put up some yards on the ground and move the ball. for this reason, I don't see Bama getting dramatically more offensive snaps than the prev 2 big SEC games unless the Bama offense can HOLD THE BALL. BIG IF there....

4. Bama's pass blocking has been mediocre in the last 2 SEC games.. particularly the barn game. There were times where Jalen had plenty of time but couldn't find anywhere to throw it and he seemed to get jumpy. Other times, the Barn was on him before he could hardly get his feet set. It struck me odd that Bama didn't really pick the right plays to offset/minimize the Barn's pass rush. Jalen running the ball is great, but 18 carries against Auburn many or which were not designed runs will not work out against Clemson. I like for Jalen to run when by design... especially the way Kiffin used him swinging wide with his RBs and other blockers in front of him. When did that play not work? Why do we not do what worked so well last year? *Baffled* ---- IMO the best way to deal with our pass blocking issue and Jalen's struggles in passing effeciency is to do it a lot less. Run the ball 30+ times. Pass "when you have to" on play action and go deep, baby. If not, stick with high percentage completion screens and such.... BAsically run Kiffin's offense.. lol

*****I don't think Bama matches up well against this team due to the failures in our passing game. If Jalen is hot and is throwing deep and connecting, we could win big, but I just don't have any reason to think that will occur given the nature of Clemson's front 7 and their ability to rush the passer. I think our best bet against them is to play ball control and run the ball like it is our job. If you get 2-3 first downs and punt it deep, great. Keep doing that, and bring the scoring down a bit.

Clemson probably puts up about the same number of points that Auburn and miss st did... mid to upper 20's i would say. I just don't see Alabama's offense pushing 30 points here if the offensive scheme doesn't change a bit. I hope I'm wrong. RTR

That's a pretty good summation of what a lot of Bama fans are seeing and feeling about this year's team. One more failure against an elite defense and Bama will be reinventing the wheel anyway.

I believe also in the idea that RPOs are going to have to be a serious part of our offensive scheme when Jalen's in the game. I think our failure against better defenses recently is partly because Jalen hasn't been asked to do as much with his feet. Let the defense pick their poison in the RPO running game instead of us trying to decide for them. If we can get Clemson's head on a swivel and put them on their heels, throwing the football will come and will come easily.

That's all that Clemson is trying to do to us.

This I know, no matter what approach we start the game with, we'd better be able to make in-game adjustments and be decisive about it. Our backs (vs Auburn) only carried 6 time each for Bo, Harris, and Jacobs. Hopefully, we'll find the success we need on Offense to sustain drives and eat the clock. If Clemson runs 99 plays on us in this game, they will blow us out.

I agree with the others, excellent posts. I'm enjoying reading everyone's opinion on the game.

I happen to agree with @WeAllBleedCrimson that it doesn't matter if we throw the kitchen sink at them, if we cannot adjust, we will lose like South Carolina and Miami did against them. We're essentially playing a mirror of ourselves where they can match up with us anywhere on the field. I think we have more depth in areas and overall (our third string would beat their third string type analysis), but I also think we're at a coaching disadvantage with Daboll and Pruitt. Pruitt will not be zoned in like a guy that has everything to lose. And I have not enjoyed watching Daboll's offense at all like I thought I would. I wanted to see our backs pound the rock and make teams quit, and then our speed on the outside blow the tops off the defense. Ridley has owned up to his part of the bargain, but Daboll has not done anything for anyone else in my mind.

I think the health is the biggest thing. This team is so beat up it's unreal. Now, that's not going to fix everything obviously. Both the offense and defense have struggled the last few games. Offense has to be more efficient, obviously. Give Jalen some easy, quick throws to start the game off. Some slants and bubble screens and lean on that running game. Then, start taking some shots down field. They are unquestionably going to stack the box and really bring heat off the edges to try and keep Jalen contained, he has to make the right decisions to get the ball out and there needs to be a bigger concentrated effort on using the middle of the field in the passing game.

Defensively, I honestly dont know what the answer is. Getting Lewis, Miller, Mack and Minkah back closer to 100 percent is a start but the D-Line is so much softer this season than we are used to. Rashaan is going to have to play his ass off to chase Bryant around, he may actually be faster than Watson. I dont think he has the arm that Watson had or the accuracy but his game is to make you worry so much about his feet that you overcompensate and he takes a shot on you. Having Moses in the lineup would have been a lot bigger because it gave another speedy backer a chance to let Evans do some other things. I think we're going to see a ton of blitzes.

Hopefully better disguised blitzes. Got killed with easy crossing routes over middle vs Barn.

How can you beat a really good defensive football team when you can't throw the ball with success? The Bama defense will have to play the best game of the year hoping to hold CU to 17 points. With that said how does Bama score 18 points. JMO but I look forward to seeing what Nick Saban can do with his team. Like it or not he is on the stage in this big game vs Dabo.

Ya know, I always want Bama to score 50 points but man I hope Jalen absolutely torches Clemson just so we dont have to read crap like this anymore.

We'll always read this.

I do get what he's saying. He has a lot of doubt whether or not Jalen can successfully pass the ball against good defenses. Doubt may not be the right word; confidence may be more descriptive.

If we see Jalen had a great game against Clemson next up will be Tua is unhappy in Tuscaloosa and he's going to transfer.

Unless he's going to Jax St. or Samford, Tua isn't going anywhere. His family is doing fine here in Alabaster. I get where you're going there; there are always the hand-ringers. That rumor, however, isn't going to fly, not with me.

I’ll try to answer the point you made in your original post.

1. Is Clemson that good? IMO, they are good. Other than laying the egg against Syracuse, they have won, just like us. Sometimes the win was pretty and sometimes, it was down right ugly. Our schedule, this year, has not been the strongest either. We had the loss against Auburn and struggled with Mississippi State and LSU. We easily could have lost two more.

2. We have been fortunate the past few years with injuries but this year we were hit, especially at LB. most people do not realize that to compete yer in and year out at the highest leve, you have to be good, catch/make a break or two AND remain relatively injury free. We are not as good as we have been in the past, we have made a couple of big plays a key times but that injury bug bit hard. I see our problem more in the offensive line than with the QB. On defense, we MUST get off the field on 3 rd down and long.

3. Clemson makes plays and we struggle to make plays in big games. Problem? I see the OL and thenour QB looking too much for Ridley. Spread the wealth, use other WR and for goodness sakes the TE. Nobody, guards the TE.

4. Our OL has not progressed IMO in run or pass blocking this season. Sure we do ok against some teams but once again, I ask, what did we do in the 3 games I have already mentioned? I can not put a finger on the problem since I am not at practice but I see lots of OL issues watching the game and many years coaching the OL. If you do not win the line of scrimmage, you do not run or pass the ball.

"Why should we expect Alabama to win?"

We shouldn't. Sorry, but this will be just like the Auburn game. 31-14, 31-17, somewhere around there anyway. Jalen, bless his heart, just isn't an effective passer, and we need a balanced attack to beat a team like Clemson.
