The directional schools are still the elephant in the room and the NCAA need to legislate their butt off and make it a major crime to even entertain thoughts of scheduling these little people. Historically, all the way back to coach Bryant, no one. Whether we had Southern Miss, Louisiana Lafayette, or even a Notre Dame or Penn State, most of them had a bye week between themselves and the barn game.

With the potential for everyone to play a 13 game schedule, 2 byes, now more than ever, are the answer to all life's football scheduling problems as it was before the 12th and 13th game was invented.

We get 2 byes this season and Bama doesn't see the need to exercise it before we go to the Plains. With our directional school (Western Carolina) parked in front of them, it's officially a 3 bye season. If these guys were off limits, anyone care to guess where that second bye would go? What's old is new.

The 12 game "was invented" to give the "little people" a payday. They aren't going away because there are more of them than ''big people". They aren't going to vote to eliminate that payday.

On the VERY EXACT same day the 12th game was added, the old rule which prohibited 1A schools from playing 1AA more than once every four years was eliminated. The little people voted themselves money.

They aren't going to add another week to the season. Not for another bye week, nor for a 13th game. And certainly not two weeks for both.

If the season's length is changed where teams always have two byes the academic calendars will also have to be changed to fit the NCAA's bylaws on practices, when players can report, etc. You change the dates in the fall, it's going to have to change in the summer or when school ends. I don't see school administrations being in favor of moving the CCG's to the second week of December (especially with finals, etc.)

And, for what its worth, if you think too many complain about a team like Bama playing The Citadel the next to the last week of the regular season ... how do you think it'll go over if it's suggested the same team get a bye week before Auburn? Do you remember how loudly folks complained when considering the two taking an off week before the SECCG?

Terry and I both have explained numerous times as to how there are only a handful of FBS teams available on that weekend, and why the few that are available are not going to come, and if one of them did agree to come they would be no better than the FCS teams being scheduled.

I was actually alluding to @252BAMA comment and it wasn't pertaining to Bama fans showing up, but rather teams that would be willing to go to Tuscaloosa before the Iron Bowl. Historically, Bama has not allowed any FBS schools to schedule a week before the barners, back to Bear Bryant. It wasn't until the school's for the blind jumped on the schedule as the 12th game, or as we refer to them down south, (the second bye with a payday) has this been a scheduling pattern.

Given that everyone gets 2 byes you can't believe this will be a legitimate issue. My plan is not to stop people complaining, no one has that plan figured out. I want to get rid of FCS schools that carry all the drama of an A-day game.

@252BAMA hasn't been talking about schools that are willing to come to Tuscaloosa before the game with Auburn. He's been referring to teams that were able to do so.

If you'll look at Bryant's tenure you'll see a few things. One, when he started coaching, football was at 10 games per year: 11 with the bowl games. 1970 was the year that marked the start of moving to 11 regular season games. 2005 the move to 12 (taking up a bye week.)

If we look at the schedules you're right in a sense. You won't find that many games against your bigger schools before Auburn. However, you'll also find more bye weeks before Auburn than games against "lesser opponents." Both scenarios come from the same problems; finding teams willing to play in Tuscaloosa in November. It was especially magnified back then when we were looking at a minimum of six wins for bowl eligibility with 10 regular season games: 11 regular season games didn't offer a solution. It's still about traveling to an OOC school in the last month of the season.

The elephant in the room is being ignored again. It's not that simple. The NCAA isn't going to allow schools from the SEC to start earlier (IF they choose to adjust their academic calendar which is extremely unlikely) and have a school like Stanford—who operates on a quarterly system—not be able to do the same thing. (Remember, that 12th game took up a bye week.)

As I was trying to point out, if you change the academic calendar for the fall it automatically changes the summer sessions. If it's changed it also changes the start of fall practices.

No one is arguing that the current system has its flaws. The argument lies in the alleged simple solutions offered that are not as simple as they seem to be.

Missouri has BYU scheduled in 2020 and are in the same boat as UT.
Arkansas's biggest opponent this season is Colorado State. They are not a P5 school.

Exactly! Mike Slive can't mandate crap. It takes TWO schools to schedule a game. Mike Slive doesn't have any authority whatsoever over the other schools. And just thinks he has some over SEC schools.

In 2016 the SEC designated 3 independent FBS schools as power 5 teams. Army, BYU, and Notre Dame.

The reason that Arkansas doesn't have to play a power 5 team this schedule is that Michigan weaseled out of their schedule with the Razorbacks at the last moment and couldn't replace them.

Otherwise, the power 5 mandate the SEC implemented seems to be doing just fine.
