| FTBL When can Bama expect a new AD

Moore was an asst AD when he went to LY's hotel room and Kenny Smith was there.

And sure, he may not and maybe was not in a position to know about the dealings with Means. But, he knew that the NCAA was looking at LY very hard, yet he continued to be associated with him even after he became AD. That doesn't look good to folks outside the program and the NCAA.

I like Mal Moore. I think he is a good person, and I appreciate what he has done for The U of A. But it is about time to move on IMO.

You know yourself that LY had been around for many years. He and I had mutual friends and I had never heard of any wrongdoing by him.

As for Mal's position prior to AD, it was more PR than anything. He was more of a paid spokesperson than anything.

I don't know that Ozzie will come (or even if he can). I seem to recall that the AD position requires a master's degree and Ozzie only has a Bachelor's. That is nothing against him, but if he does not fulfill the university requirements he cannot be hired. I would love to see him as AD.

Mal Moore while raking in serious dollars for the University has been a failure x10 as AD IMO.

What reasons do you give for this?

For one, checkout the Sears Directors Cup standings for te years since CMM had been AD and see how Alabama stands in all sports.

i agree that he has done a good job with the facilities.

To build a good sports program, facilities are a must.

But. I think he has made some stupid decisions on hiring and firing of coaches.

well, maybe not alot of bad ideas....but a few.......(Womens B-Ball Coach.....WTF she does not even recruit in Alabama?)

I am not a MM apologist but overall I think he has done a good job. There is a finite amount of resource that can be dedicated to anything. I think MM has sacrificed short term gains for long term vision. Under him the facilities have been made world class (for the most part) and that is a long term proposition. Resource and time have been poured into making the U of A a place that stands out among other schools in the ultra competitive SEC.

Couple that with him landing Coach Saban and doing a decent job under exceedingly difficult circumstances (most of which were out of his control) and I think he will be remembered fondly when he is gone. Nobody could have seen Coach Fran leaving in the way he did, nor the Price fiasco that led to a last minute hiring of Shula. I seem to remember at the time most people liking the Shula hire including most people on this site. It seemed the right thing at the time. Hindsight is always 20/20 but Mal is not to be blamed for Fran/Price and Shula was the only one ready in such short notice. The sanctions are also not totally at the feet of MM. Still, I realize figure heads get all the blame (or at least the lion's share).

Dating back to finding a "100 days before kickoff" solution for a head football coach, I seem to know of only two names...Mike Shula and Sly Croom. If not Mike, and if not Sly, then who would have been the glorious name that would have us sitting high and mighty now?

I seem to remember an atmosphere that we had a bright young coach that had potential, and if given loyalty, MIGHT have proven to be a diamond in the rough for our keeping.

He did not turn out to be that way, but who else would have been a better option, because I have not heard a name. YET, people fault CMM for not knowing more than the rest of the human race on this matter. I think that opinion is misguided.

Just you'll know, Mike Shula was not Mal Moores choice. He was President Witt's choice. CMM gave Witt 3 names: Mike Shula, Sly Croom, and Richard Williamson who wanted the job. CMM wanted Williamson.

LSU's new AD hire has gone over like a lead balloon in their circles. Alleva wasn't liked or respected by the Duke group before he left that job. A real telling comment on Avela came from the Washington Post when they opined, "Everyone at Duke knew that Alleva was a pleasant man whose next original idea would be his first..."

Secondly, Coach Moore recommended three people (Williamson, Croom and Shula) to Dr. Witt for the job. It was Witt's decision to give Shula the shot.

Didn't Alleva hire Ted Roof? That's evidence enough that he's a complete idiot. He and Miles will love each other. They can have their own little idiot convention.

As for Mal Moore, I love him. He guided us through the worse period in our history. As for his relationship with Logan Young, no violations took place during Mal's tenure, so his relationship wasn't a factor, imo. Our facilities are second to none in large part because of Mal's ability to raise money like a mad man. Saban's hiring was the icing on the cake. When he decides to retire, he will leave Alabama back at the top of college athletics where we belong.

One would have to be pretty short sighted to call for Mal's resignation. No shortage of those types in the Bama Nation, right?

While Ozzie has always been a popular candidate, I don't think he has the experience to step in as AD. My money would be on Mark Womack. Just my 2 cents.

I'll 2nd the opinion on Ozzie. Mark Womack would be a good candidate but, I think Chris King is being put in position to take over as AD when Mal decides to retire.

I like Chris King as a person. Nice guy, very amiable. But, I don't see him as being the guy to step in when CMM retires because his personality and CNS's clash. I do see King as being an AD at some point. But, not at Bama. I'd see him in a role at a school the size of Troy, as example. (size, as in position Athletics in Div. 1 play)

Womack's name has been circulated and would be a good choice. My only hope is Dr. Witt is still the President when the decision has to be made. Unlike Bowtie and a few others, he understands the integral role of Athletics and Academics.

Ozzie would be a incredible hire for us, but I don't know anything about this Womack guy.

Right now, he's the #2 guy in the SEC under Slive. He joined the Southeastern Conference staff in 1978 upon graduation from the University of Alabama and has served the conference in numerous capacities ranging from Assistant Public Relations Director to Acting Commissioner.

His current duties include negotiating and monitoring television contracts for football, basketball and other conference sports; liaison between post-season bowls and member institutions (assisted in the development of the Bowl Championship Series); oversee the conference budget including the receipt and distribution of conference funds to member institutions; liaison with conference athletics directors; oversee operation of the SEC Football Championship Game and the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments and conference scheduling for football and basketball.

Womack currently serves on the NCAA Championship/Competition Cabinet, is the chairman of the NCAA Division 1 Football Licensing Subcommittee and is a member of the NCAA Playing and Practice Seasons Subcommittee. He is a member of the Board of Directors of NCAA Football and chairs the Budget and Finance Committee of NCAA Football.

Womack, 51, began his duties with the SEC as Assistant Public Relations Director with responsibility for publicizing all conference sports. In 1979 Womack was promoted to Assistant to the Commissioner for Information and Administration, continuing his media responsibilities as well as working in areas of eligibility and financial aid for sprig sports and office-wide administrative duties.

In 1981 Commissioner Boyd McWhorter named Womack Assistant Commissioner with responsibility for conference championships, meetings and office administration. In 1988 Womack served two months as Acting Commissioner for the SEC when Commissioner Harvey Schiller accepted the job of Executive Director of the United States Olympic Committee before deciding to return to the SEC. Upon his return he promoted Womack to Associate Commissioner. Womack again served the Conference as Acting Commissioner for four months during 1989-90 before Roy Kramer was hired as Commissioner in 1990. Kramer promoted Womack to Executive Associate Commissioner upon his arrival.

While at Alabama, Womack worked in the athletic department’s sports information office for two years before receiving his degree in Communications with a major in Public Relations and a minor in Promotional Management. Womack grew up in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and attended Tuscaloosa High school where he was a three-year starter at quarterback, leading his team to the semifinals of the state championship his senior year.

Wow thanks Terry, he sounds over qualified.

Just to add to Terry's background info regarding Mark. When you look at the list of commissioners over the last 3 decades, when the SEC had such tremendous growth, you see several prominent names. However, the common denominator during that time was Mark. He was strongly considered when Mal was hired (and considered the front runner by many), but pulled our of the running late because he thought he might end up being named commissioner. It is now pretty clear that the league presidents are not going to name a Bama grad as SEC commissioner.

Personally, I think he would take the job the next time it's offered.

Don't take my comment about Ozzie as a negative. He's a great football guy, but AD involves much more. Mark's background is more suited for AD, imo. I really like his experience in TV contracts and marketing, especially since UA now owns a television station. There are unlimited possibilities with secondary sports if the right person is in charge. Plus, he knows where the skeletons are buried.

Last, but not least, he's an old friend.
