🏈 What's right with BAMA?

BOL published this article a couple of days ago looking at the opposite end of what most fans are discussing lately—the positives of the 2014 season to date. Here's a look at the five positive things their beat writers offered:
  • Everything is still on the table.
  • Defense is developing an identity.
  • Offensive potential is still high.
  • Great Scott.
  • Mistakes are correctable.
A lot of these have been discussed, some seemingly forgotten. As the team is preparing the face A&M the most important area, as I see this, is how the defense has been getting better as each week has passed while dealing with some significant injuries. A few here questioned this unit improving in weeks two and three but that is something inescapable now.

One thing not mentioned in that write-up is the entire team developing a passion about competing. Several of the offensive linemen were among the most vocal this past week while critiquing their own play. Shepard's comments about it being their worse performance in his recollection and others talking about competing at a championship level demonstrate, to me, the mental passion we've looked for is being built upon. (The one point win very well may be looked back upon and noted as a turning point for this team.)

It was either @bama alum or @bamaledge that linked a editorial/commentary a few weeks ago about the team appearing to have lost, or forgotten, about the "fun factor" in winning. Recent interviews with players show that's not something lost with this group of guys.

Saban made this comment earlier this week: “When Landon Collins intercepted the ball at the end of the game, I haven’t seen that much emotion out of our team in a long time.”

It was echoed by several players including Jonathan Allen: “It was great. Running down the field, I was tired but had to go celebrate with him. I was happy for him. He’s a great guy and works hard, and he deserves it.”

“It was the most emotion we’ve shown all year. I think we need more of that. A team that is emotionally attached to one another will play harder for one another. Now I feel like that’s a big key of playing defense.”

~You asked for it, you got it—playoffs.

I'm choosing to look at the remainder of the season in this light. In the NFL fans talk of their teams peaking at the right time. We're at the mid-point of the season and I'm seeing things that lead me to think things are coming together.

Despite the mediocre way Blake played, I saw a lot of that leadership that everyone keeps talking about in him. Go back and watch the way he kept getting in guys ears on the sideline, trying to keep them up when they weren't playing well. And then when he messed up on the QB sneak almost the entire team came up to him on the bench, lifting him up, players don't do that with a guy they dont believe in and see as a leader of the team. Now it has to transition into more consistency on the field and at some point he is going to have another opportunity to win the game, like against Ole Miss, and he has to take that and seize the moment.

Like you said, JK Scott is incredible. He is already one of the best punters I've seen at Bama in my lifetime and I think he will only get better which is scary.

The front seven are getting better and better, especially against the run, I don't think there is a traditional running game in the country that can run on that front. The question is do they have the speed to corral MSU and Auburn's more unconventional running games. There have still been some lapses in holding running QBs. In fact every single mobile QB this year has made at least a couple of big scrambles including Brandon Allen who isnt much of a scrambler. Reggie Ragland is turning into an excellent backer and if he can continue to improve in pass defense he will be yet another special one in the long line of special linebackers. I think Reuben may end up falling into that Nico Johnson type of role where he only gets on the field on running downs because he really, really struggles against the pass. Ryan Anderson and Rashaan Evans as pass rushers along with Dickson, Allen, and Robinson could end up being the secondary's best friends if they can continue to get better with getting pressure. If we can get pressure with four man pass rushes it will be huge for the defense.

The things i see that are most right with this team are:

the defense is improving in all areas particularly the line..
Our punter is badass
Our offense hasn't played a good game since fla and is bound to pick up the pace at some point and perform better.... chance is in our favor there with the amount of talent on that side of the ball
the Oline will eventually have some of the missing players back and the noobs are now getting a chance to learn and be more productive players so that may help by the end of the season.

In the point spread thread Birdman mentions the 2009 season and how GMac started off hot, hit a cool spell, and then returned to form.

The injuries, on both sides of the ball, and the very same type of production on offense are eerily similar to 2010. The close game with Arkansas and blowing out Florida fit as well.

How soon we seem to forget that Blake was slammed on to his throwing shoulder and we were wondering if he was done. I also remember it was not until after the 2010 season that we learned our QB had been playing with an injured (not just "hurt") shoulder all year. Folks need to take it easy on Blake.

I'd have to go back and research it but I can recall we had 30+ games missed by starters in the 2010 season. I'd also have to stop and count how many games have been missed by whom this season.

Right now, we aren't too bad on the injury front. We've lost three for the season, one contributor a scrub likely to shirt and a guy that might have seen the field in a game this season.

We're a couple of weeks away from Devall and Kelly coming back and as thin as we are at linebacker we've done a serviceable job replacing him.

I've not heard anything, and can't recall seeing it mentioned, on Tyren. @planomateo @Brandon Van de Graaff Have either of you two caught an injury update on him?

Grant and Arie still banged up...getting a lot of reps there for some linemen this year and seeing the consequences of doing so.

All that said, the feeling I've got this week runs along the lines of TJ having a season highlight type of game.

Off the top of my head...

Gone for the year: Kenyan Drake, Ronnie Clark,
Missed games: DeAndrew White, Jarrick Williams, Eddie Jackson, Ryan Kelly, Denzall Devall, Tyren Jones, Grant Hill, Geno Smith
Missed practices: Trey DePriest, Arie Kouandjio, Dominick Jackson, TJ Yeldon, Amari Cooper, Dominick Jackson, A'Shawn Robinson, Derrick Henry, Blake Sims

Did anyone watch the TCU and Baylor game. The sideline on Baylor was so hype I think most was because of the TV. I am not saying that Bama should do it that way ,but during the whole game show something and not just because it's the 4th either.

Part of the problem is that the team gets so used to winning and dominating, they think other teams will just lay down. Those days are over. We need to play with emotion and fire again. Domination has to be earned. I'd like to see the team be less business-like and more fired up and take the approach that they have to prove themselves from scratch all over again.

You've got that right. I'm sure glad we've got him over there. He's been a very bright spot for this last recruiting class. I also believe the other Cam, Sims, has played well. Still wish Sims wouldn't have overthrown him on that one deep ball in either the So. Miss or Florida game. Guy is solid. He made a nice catch that may be overlooked on our last scoring drive against Arky, if I'm not mistaken. The ball could have been picked.

No discussion of what is right with Alabama would be complete without mentioning the big guy at left tackle, Cam Robinson. He has lived up to the hype.
