Nick Saban: 'Most teams don't play us like they used to'

On Tuesday, we took a look at the development of Nick Saban’s offense and how it has improved in every season. On Wednesday, Saban provided some context.

At his press conference, Saban was asked about the improvement of the offensive line, compared to the veteran unit a year ago. Alabama is averaging 5.7 yards per carry this season, compared to 5.5 a year ago. Last season, the Tide allowed 1.6 sacks per game. This year, the number is almost half of that.

Saban credited the ability to stay balanced as helping both aspects of the offense, and that’s a credit to the line, senior quarterback A.J. McCarron and offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier.

“I don’t look at things like that,” Saban said of stats. “I think you guys assume I know what’s going on in the world, (that) I spend time looking at the same thing you do, and I don’t. I appreciate the information. I think that it’s unfair to compare last year’s line to this year’s line. I think this year’s line has a personality of its own. I think the balance we have on offense, the efficiency in the passing game, the good job this group does in pass protection helps us be a much better running team.

“Most teams don’t play us like they used to to just stop the run. I think that’s made our running game more effective. I think that’s due to the fact the offensive line does a good job in pass protection. We haven’t had a lot of pressure. We had one sack last week, which was on a bootleg, which isn’t the offensive line. We didn’t have that guy blocked.

“Those guys have done a good job all the way around. We need to continue to create that type of balance for the rest of the season if we’re going to have an opportunity to have success against the quality of opponents we have left to play.”
