It was a kickoff. As long as it goes 10 yards the kicking team can recover.

Kickoffs are live after 10 yards. If it was a punt, your thinking would be correct.

One of the quirky kicking rules. Similar, but different, to Waddle muffing the punt against Ole Miss. Since he never gained control of the ball it was a muffed punt, not a fumble, which cannot be advanced.
