🏈 We were talking about Dabo losing his program several weeks ago. What's your opinion now? Here's one from a Tigers' fan.

I do remember scanning their board after we beat them in the first title. The mods deleted it, but one fan posted something along the lines of hoping Saban got cancer. Clemtech fans are obnoxious.

Now we've got the three biggest names at Clemson leaving: their OC, DC, and an AD (Thad.) Do I dare suggest they are trying to get out from under his shadow? IE: It's not all about Dabo, it's about the group he put together that he's left at the wayside.

Dabo: hating on the transfer portal. How does that do when his coordinators are trying to bring in talent? The NIL? He said he'd quit.

What really strikes me as funny is what he had to say a few days ago when discussing who he was going to bring in to replace Venables. I paraphrase Dabo here: "people are going to be shocked at the name I announce thinking it's crazy." He didn't do anything crazy, just promoted from within, again.

Clemson, and Oregon for that matter, weren't/aren't the teams they were in the past. I don't see either one returning to their earlier form next season.

I liked Mickey Conn when he was here as a player. Getting caught up in the DuBose regime didn't increase my respect; it put a shadow of doubt on who he was. I don't see this as a good hire for a defensive coordinator. I guess Dabo thinks "I wasn't a coordinator, why should I hire one?"

We’ll find out if Dabo made his coordinators great or they made him great really soon. The hiring from within process can be great, BUT it can also be a dumpster fire, just take a look back to the DuBose years. Clemson will be back to Clemsoning again I suspect.

This solidifies my ongoing point that Bama is THE brand name in college football. Year in and year out, decade after decade Bama stays atop as the bell cow in CF. Sure there are down years, heck even a down decade here and there but because of its history in the sport, Alabama remains iconic even when it goes thru tough times. They are done for atleast the next five years. Recruiting is down, big recruits transferring out, new coaches, and others in the conference seeing a little more success. Clemson will average two losses and no Playoffs the next five years I'm predicting.

While what you're saying here is true the two aren't comparable. One only needs to look at the hires to see a vast difference. In an offense that sputtered, with a QB who struggled, he moves his QB coach up the ranks to his offensive coordinator? It's not an improvement over Elliot (who wasn't that good in the first place.)

He's replaced the eyes and instincts of Venables with whom? Basically, no one. It's the same staff coming back sans their most talented member.

2022? Where did they fill their areas of need when you compare what we'll see next season to this past season? They signed another tall, lanky WR with a lot of length. They had that, in spades, last season and that was the problem: no other skill sets (IE: slot) were to be found. They signed one guy (out of the 12) who fits that role we've seen guys like Metchie fill.


Now, while they've only signed 12 lets remember one thing: Dabo has come out strongly against using the transfer portal. Where does that leave them?

Dabo is neither the lightening nor the bottle though he believes himself to be both.

It's not "Dabo's demise." It's more regression to the mean.

There’s a lot of speculation in your post. I’m saying we need to see a dead body before we convict him of murder. While there are signs of potential downfall, they aren’t dead yet.

Having said that, he has been at Clemson for 19 years. He has been the HC for 14 years. This is where you start to see the staleness of a HC set in. I think of Phat Phil at 10RC and Mack Brown at Tejas. Both of those guys around the same year mark started their decline from being the king of the mountain.

I think of one of the Bear Bryant quotes they play over the intercom during pregame, "it's takes the same thing to win, that it always took to win." Now I think he was talking about Jimmy and Joes and toughness and the intangibles of the game, but he changed in 71 or so to the Wishbone and rode it for a decade. I was young his last few year he was at Bama, but a buddy of mine that was at UA during Bears last few years said that there was some grumbling that in 81-82 the game had changed again and he was too old to adapt.

In recent years we witnessed CNS adapt offensively and change his philosophy offensively and some on defense (what is acceptable). It is very difficult to change from something you have always done and got good/great results from.

I get where @TerryP is coming from on the lackluster hires by Dabo. I wonder if this is him trying to be a good guy to his coaches and promote from within. I remember when WVU hung 70 on them in the Orange Bowl, He cut Kevin Steele loose and went and got Venables. Reminds me a lot of what Spurrier did at UF when he got Stoops in 95 ish.

I'm not ready to bury Swinney just yet, but I would imagine if he has another year like this one, a lot of folks will get their shovels out.
