Producer Gale Anne Hurd loves The Walking Dead—and not just her AMC television show, which returned from its seasonal hiatus this Sunday. She's a big fan of Robert Kirkman's comic book as well. "The stakes really are life or death. Every moment of every day, you can't let down your guard. I've always been attracted to stories about ordinary people thrust into extraordinary circumstances, and this is the quintessential telling of that story."

Hurd, who also produced some of sci-fi's greatest films, The Terminator, Aliens and The Abyss, sat down with us at New York Comic Con to talk about what we can expect to see in season four.

Hurd said, "This is the season where we get to see if people really can return from the dark side. Will Rick be able …to come back from Crazytown? Will he be able to relinquish the reins of the Ricktatorship? Will there be enough peace and harmony in the prison, considering they did bring in all the survivors of Woodbury? Can that kind of peace last, given what human nature is and given, as you've seen in the promos, the walkers at the gate?"

Rick wasn't the only person to have had a psychotic break with reality last season. So did the Governor—and Hurd confirmed, "We'll definitely be seeing more of [him]" this season.

"The Governor killed his own followers, so he's gone to a very, very dark place that's going to be even more difficult to come back from than the place where Rick went in Crazytown. So we'll have to see what's become of him. Is he still truly a madman … or does he try to redeem himself as well?" asked Hurd.

As we saw in episode one of season four, Michonne hasn't forgotten the Governor or her need for "closure" (but instead of using words, she'll use a katana). But now that Andrea is gone, does that mean that the only ass-kicking female characters will be Michonne and Maggie?

Hurd said, "Laurie Holden is a fantastic actress. It's very sad not to have her this season. On the other hand, it has provided an opportunity not only for Carol to step up, but also for Sasha and Beth … so actually this season you're going to see a transformation of many of the female characters."

Any other transformations? Like, for example, a transformation of the flirtatious yet platonic relationship between Carol and Darryl into a full-on romantic one?
"They have love and respect for each other, no question. They are able to tease each other. You don't get Darryl to smile very much, but Carol can. I love the interplay between the two of them. I love the double entendre. We'll see if it develops into anything more."

We'll see? Really? So what, exactly, will we see?

"I can't tell you. That would be such a big spoiler, it would probably be the number-one spoiler of the season."

Glad to see other fans here!

First episode: I was a little confused by the random crazy lady in the woods. I understood the symbolism and how it related to Rick and whatnot, but it felt very forced and awkward .. And how about Carol being a BAMF behind parents' backs and teaching their kids self-defense? She has come a long way from the abused, emotionally damaged wife we saw in Season 1. Also what is army medic guy's deal??? He seems sketchy to me. I think he is working with the Gov.

Second episode: Piggies died; how fitting for Arkansas weekend :) also, it is interesting to finally see how other children are experiencing life, besides Carl. But I think things just got more complicated, since everyone is infected anyway but some who die become zombies. Thanks to this weird flu thing going around, everyone is even more at risk ..

Can't wait for Sunday, as always.

Wow ,that was quick...

In an unsurprising move, AMC has renewed their hit series "The Walking Dead" for a fifth season. Read the full press release below for all of the details. Are you excited for a fifth season of the series?

AMC announced today that it has renewed The Walking Dead for a fifth season. The number one show on television among adults 18-49, The Walking Dead returned for a fourth season earlier this month and the premiere episode set a new record for the series, delivering 20.2 million viewers, live+3, and 13.2 million adults 18-49, a new record for any non-sports cable telecast.

“We are very happy to make what has to be one of the most anti-climactic renewal announcements ever: The Walking Dead is renewed for a fifth season,” said Charlie Collier, AMC president. “This is a show that has erased traditional distinctions between cable and broadcast. Its expanding base of passionate fans has grown every season, most recently – and most notably – with the season four premiere earlier this month, which broke viewership records for the series and became the biggest non-sports telecast in cable history. On behalf of the incredible team on both sides of the camera, thank you to the fans and here’s to more Dead.”

For season five, Scott Gimple will return as the series’ showrunner along with executive producers Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, Greg Nicotero and Tom Luse. AMC also recently announced that it is developing a companion series to The Walking Dead, based on a new story and new characters from Robert Kirkman.

Thoughts on last night's episode??

** HERE BE SPOILERS**

I really liked the shot of Carl on the roof eating pudding, looking off into the distance as a walker was reaching towards him through the window. Also, I can't believe some folks thought Rick was actually dead. Come on now. Oh, and how about Hershel's walker head growling at Michonne?! EERIE. It was cool to get some of Michonne's back story as well .. The baby thing was alluded to last season but it was nice to finally see her "beginnings" of sorts. Creepy stuff seeing herself as a walker though.

Thought the episode had a cute ending.

Good analysis. Glad the show's back on -- wanted to see what happened with the rest of the group - which I suppose we'll find out next Sunday.

I had seen several folks on facebook and Twitter say how awful it was before I got a chance to see it last night, so I wasn't expecting much. It wasn't that bad though... I wanted them out of the prison because that was getting old, just like the farm was, so if some slowness is what it takes, then so be it.

Agreed, I think that with the prison, they fell into the same trap as in season 2 with the farm. I don't think the episode was awful. It certainly wasn't the best episode ever, but that mid-season finale was a tough act to follow haha. One thing I have noticed with "Walking Dead" is the buildup tends to be tedious in all of the right ways. It's slow and methodical and builds to an explosive climax. We've noticed the same arc happen a few times a a season now. I don't really mind it.

I still don't believe Judith is dead. The rule of "Walking Dead" is, if you don't SEE the death, then they are not dead! But I suppose it is possible that a gruesome baby death was too .. graphic for TV (even for this show) so maybe that's why it wasn't shown, but implied ..

I am curious to see how the rest of the group splintered off after the attack, as it seems Glen, Maggie, Daryl, Tyreese, Tyreese's sister, Maggie's sister (I never remember the names of those two), etc. are all broken up.

SPOILERS

I called it re: Judith!!! Also, it will be super awkward when Tyreese finds out about what Carol did to his girlfriend lol.

I have not read the graphic novels but I hear that the end shot of the 3 new people (the army guys and gal) is identical the cover of issue #53 and the novel loyalists were really excited about it.

I thought the various groups were interesting/shook up the dynamics a bit:

- Rick, Carl, and Michonne
- Daryl and Beth (is Daryl starting to look pretty hopeless, or what?)
- Tyreese, the 2 little girls (INCLUDING THE CRAZY NAMED LIZZIE WHO TRIED TO SUFFOCATE JUDITH, WHAT THE HECK?!), Judith, and Carol
- Maggie, Tyreese's sister (forget her name), and the army medic dude (what is his name??)
- Glen and Tara (aka, the girl whose sister banged the Gov then got eaten alive, whose niece got bit by a walker then shot by the Gov, and whose girlfriend got killed by crazy ass Lizzie .. so basically Tara has a lot of issues to go through right now, topped off by the fact that she was involved in the attack on the prison).

Can't wait to see what this place at the end of the tracks is, and if it is the same place that the 3 army folks are from.

Last night's episode, ahhhhh! I really liked it. Love where the show is going. I thought the different story arcs would get a little hectic but the pace is really well-done IMO. It was cool to slow down a bit and get to know Carl and Michonne, and the Rick story was cool with it's growing tension/thriller-feel. Very interesting ending to that arc with the train car and the "sanctuary" (which is where Tyreese, Carol, psycho girl, and sister are probably headed). The new characters are cool too. Really wanna know what the scientist with the mullet knows, and Abraham's story. I also like Tara as a new character, her loyalty to Glen was awesome.

I also have a theory .. Remember how someone was feeding rats to the walkers through the fence, and then someone (I think Rick?) found dissected rabbit corpses in a far flung cell in the prison? I think it's the crazy little girl, who started to suffocate Judith. Remember she was the one who also named the Walkers, and said that, "Nobody understands them" or something? I think her sister is gonna put her down, lol.
