Do they not cover this in conceal carry classes in Alabama? One of the first things covered in my conceal carry class years ago.

Probably wasn't trying to carry concealed on the plane, guy i worked with got arrested in new York when he tried to check his pistol on the return flight because his permit was from Alabama.

We'll see. Gun laws in NY alone are tough, then get magnified at the airport due to all the scrutiny.

An article tells a little more

The gun was discovered around 9:15 p.m. at a Delta check-in counter and was not loaded

More than likely he was not carrying it concealed and was trying to check baggage that included it.

You don't let these just get "discovered", hopefully that's poor journalism.

If you're gonna travel with a gun, know the rules, especially in NY or an airport.

In a statement to CNN, Williams’ attorney, Alex Spiro, said, “Mr. Williams respects and follows the law. There was allegedly a technical issue with the manner in which the lawfully owned firearm was stored – and we expect the matter to be resolved shortly.”
