šŸ“” Update: Mississippi State has relieved Joe Moorhead of coaching duties

In his post game presser after the Egg Bowl, he made a statement They'll have to drag my yankee ass outta here.

Even weirder Mississippi State opted to give him a contract extension in May 2019 out to 2022. Hell he was 1.5 years into his contract and they extended him. Serious head scratcher on this one...

His teams did struggle so that at least put him on notice with the fan base. Once that happens they just need a reason. My view is OM hiring Kiffin was the tipping point but it was an emotional reaction.

OM people are an odd bunch. I go to church with a guy that graduated from there. He is obsessed with all things Bama. Always posting and making negative comments about Bama and man the crap he spews when bama gets beat is over the top. He is more obsessed with Bama than the Barn. Did not think that was possible until I met this guy and got to know him.

The extension was an attempt to keep him from pursuing the Rutgers job.

This is a perfect example of asshattery.

Terminating a guy 7 months after an extension.

I especially love that players are held to a different standard.

I'm not a fan of the direction college athletics is going. Four P5 head coaches have been fired recently on their 2nd year at their program.

Bottom line, this is a failure of the athletic department. They passed on Jeremy Pruitt for Moorhead. Give the guy an unnecessary extension after 1 bad season.

I agree, but who expects the first season to be a good season? In many cases the first season is all about evaluation and establishing a culture. What was Saban's first year at Alabama? There's more to the story at MSU and how/if he lost control.

His first season wasn't that bad in terms of wins and losses. MSU won eight in his first season, they won nine in Mullens last season. I suppose some could look at their loss to UK in 2018 as a bad loss but that was a 10 win Kentucky team.

I can understand MSU looking at the on the field performances and seeing eight wins his first season and then six this season. But that's where it becomes a little crazy because Mullen's next to last season was a six win season as well.

Pardon my being a little crass here but it sure seems like the Kiffin hire made the Bulldogs piss down their own leg (okay, a little pun there that was certainly weak.)

I believe the hire of Lane is what moved them to make the move. With that said there still has to be a few things not seen by the public at this time. I will say the current AD isn't very impressive. He looks more like a baseball coach that has been moved to the wrong seat.

I've always liked Cohen. He seems like a pretty good fellow.

I've entertained the thought that MSU was looking at UofSC and their promotion of Tanner and thought it would work in Starkville as well.

More to the story? Geez, when your starting QB misses the bowl game because he got into a fight with a teammate and you've also got multiple players suspended for multiple games because of academics it really screams "a disciplined program." šŸ™ƒ

What more does an AD need?

I don't like the practice of firing coaches after 3 seasons, hell that's typically 1 recruiting class based on timing of ESP/NSD. It's just not enough time to fairly judge them.

From the beginning this had questionable hire written all over it. Add the bad losses this year, the team issues, bad losses, and add Ole Miss getting through their NCAA violations and hiring Kiffin. Then add the ignorant front office decisions, its messy. If you dont think he'll be the guy, why keep him around another year or two...you're just prolonging the enivinable.

Tough call. I'm just not a fan of coaches bring shown the door too early for on-field issues.

I think in this case the problems with "discipline" were a mitigating factor. Two years is definitely not enough to evaluate a coach for recruiting and other measurables, but it should be enough to evaluate discipline and other intangibles in some cases (ie: if they suck). All around, just a bad original hire that they gave 2 years to. He will land somewhere he is a better fit for.
