🏈 Update: Kiffin to FAU (Bama OC through playoffs)

By the time Bama reconvenes for practice, one of two things will be true. Either Kiffin will be a HC and agrees to finish out the season or he will declare for the OC job in baton rogue. In that case, he will be told to get on with his new life.

Some of you are saying that maybe Nick is pushing Lane out while he wants to stay here... do any of you actually think that Saban won't get exactly what he wants? if Nick wants Lane gone, he'd be gone, as HC or whatever. I think Nick would love to have him around another year, but odds are just that he'll move on to bigger (maybe not better) things...

New player in the mix...Hmm...I'd rather see Kiffin at USF before he landed at FAU.

Report: Lane Kiffin in talks with FAU to be head coach

Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin missed out on the Houston job, but another head coaching opportunity has apparently presented itself.

According to Football Scoop, Florida Atlantic is reportedly in talks with Kiffin to become its next head coach. FAU fired its previous head coach Charlie Partridge in late November after three consecutive 3-9 seasons with the program.

The 41-year-old Kiffin has spent the last three season as Alabama's offensive coordinator, helping the Crimson Tide win the SEC title and advance to the College Football Playoff in three consecutive seasons with three first-year starters at quarterback.

This season, he has guided the Crimson Tide offense to boast the SEC’s top scoring offense with a 40.5 points per game average through 13 games and ahead of another playoff run.

Kiffin previously held three head coaching jobs, first with the Oakland Raiders of the NFL, then at Tennessee and USC.

He was one of four finalists for the Houston job, which ultimately went to offensive coordinator Major Applewhite. He's also been linked to the South Florida head coaching vacancy, as well as a job as LSU's offensive coordinator.

Scott Cochran makes more than the HC at FAU. Oh my, what will he do?
They're within a 100K of each other with Cochran looking up. Heck, he's not the highest paid S&C guy in the country (who does make as much as the FAU HC did last season.)

Let's remember who Partridge is/was ... he's one Bielema brought south with him to Arkansas and was gone after year one in Fayetteville. A cheap hire, no doubt.

I'd caution against assuming they'll low ball Kiffin only because Schnellenberger still has his nose in that program. I can see him having a lot of influence in their decision.

Kiffin to USF is a major downgrade. OC at Bama is still >>> HC at USF.
I can't agree with that, Jill. Lower academic requirements in a very fertile area for recruits is a huge perk with that job. There's potential, a lot of it, down there IF the right guy is at the helm. While Jim Leavitt was a decent X and O's guy his main issue was controlling his teams' mindset—discipline issue with their play on the field. In Saban's first season he had their team up to #2 in the country (win over Auburn that season) only to crash and burn as the year closed down.

In my eyes, getting paid 1.5 to 2 million down there ... being that much closer to his kids ... I see it as a upward move. (Some of the same things apply to FAU sans the 2 million per possibility. But, you never know what a school will cough up.)

You say these were things not intended for a public forum, yet the person that leaked it sent it out, so doesn't it fall on that guy's shoulders?

To me, that's on the guy divulging the "inside info", not Boz. I mean, if it's info you don't want out in public, why tell anyone?

Hypothetical: You're sitting at a bar having a beer with one of your friends. In that conversation he shares some things with you that you'll discuss, learn something at the same time, all the while knowing you're not supposed to walk down to the other end of the bar and start sharing your conversation.

Through the years we've all had information shared with us knowing—often by request—"let's keep this between us." I know that's happened with work, family, and football with a lot here.

So ... where does the fault lie?

I don't see it as a gift too not be able to hold a secret, but I enjoy learning things about the program before the media gets ahold of it and rival fans start talking about it so I can try and form an unbiased opinion.

I don't see it as a gift either. I see it as a character trait.

I see this as a bunch of people trying to be relevant and be the coolest "insider" with "connections".

Agreed. And, another character trait, no?

If Sark gets drunk and pukes on himself (joking), that's on Sark,

I think you're only getting part of the point. Personally, I wouldn't be posting stories on public forums about anyone (player, staff, etc.) getting drunk. I'm just not "cut" that way. It's my opinion anyone who does such, in effort to have "e-cred," has some issues.

However, when one copies their own posts to point out "look what I said" and it's the same subject? What's the motivation?

He very well may be a nice guy. I don't know. All anyone is left with is their impression.

It's hard to imagine if he takes the FAU job that he's not willing to pay the price economically for his HC ambition. Now, that's more than fine with me and I get wanting to run your own ship again. The added satisfaction of coach O and LSU being left at the altar is just icing on the cake.

Dang. According to an article by one of the head guys in Houston coaching search, Lane was never really even close to getting job. He calls out Lane's agent as spreading that rumor, and he says that Kiffen was willing to sign any contract that he was given - big buyout and all. Makes it sound like Lane still has stink on him - "not a safe hire."

Houston regent: Kiffin not safe hire for Cougars
And he also says ...

"I'll be 100 percent honest with you. When this started, I thought that we needed to go out and get a name-brand coach, because, to me, it's all about brands," Fertitta said. "Nobody understands that better than me. And I wanted the University of Houston to stay relevant, OK? I think Les Miles is a fine coach and he's going to be a great coach for somebody, and I think the same thing of Lane Kiffin. I was very impressed. But when I looked at the whole picture and totality, I truly think in my heart -- and so did everybody else on the committee think -- that Major Applewhite was the right fit."

I don't expect to run out and express anything to someone at the other end of the bar either, as I do feel there should be conversations between fsmily and buddies. BUT, if a guy is out drunk in public and clearly displaying thise kind of characteristics, how is that a knock on anyone that discusses it? Confidentiality is something different than displaying an action in public around multiple others. Take the Lakers locker room situation from last year as an example. Player is gloating about other women he has cheated on his girlfriend with, and he fully expects that not to get out? Straight arrogance if you ask me. I also come from a divorced family where my dad cheated on my momma, so you can bet your ass I would have called him out on that bullshit too.
