| RECRUIT Transfer Portal tracker (Winter Window: Dec 9th through the 28th.)

I know it's been said before, and I know that talking about it doesn't change anything, but the transfer portal is absolutely insane and it's a by-product of our instant gratification society. Every kid comes out of high school believing that they are ready for the next level and that they will be an instant star as soon as they step on the field. But the truth is that kids like Ryan Williams, who are able to compete and shine in their first year, are few and far between. The vast majority of kids coming out of high school need time to get their bodies and their minds right in order to produce and shine at the college level. And when you hit the transfer portal immediately after your first year, you are slowing your development and making it more difficult for yourself to learn and grow and develop. The majority of kids need 2-3 years in a program in order to be ready to produce at the college level, but very few are willing to wait and learn. When you join the marines, they don't hand you a rifle, send you to the battlefield and say show us what you can do. You go through Basic Training, then Advanced Training, then MOS training. It's months before the Marine is ready to produce in the field. I just get tired of watching these kids act like spoiled children just because someone told them they were hot stuff in high school. Just because you had 5 stars next to your name on some website, that doesn't mean you are ready to play in college. Anyway, that's my rant and I feel better now that I typed all this out. :)

I think overall we’ve held on to most of the names we needed to. Hate to see Law and Odom go.

What’s wild to me is seeing kids transfer from playoff teams, but I’m sure each has their own situations.

The thing that most kids aren’t going to see at their age - it’s a huge benefit to them to find a system that works for them, and stick with it. Changing systems will slow them down and waste years of eligibility. I understand that a lot of these kids come from bad situations financially though and that bag has got to be tempting.

And herein lies the problem (well. one of several). Do you give a spot to a kid that wasn't willing to compete for one at this previous spot? Why was that the case? Was he legitimately stuck behind a player(s) that were better and he wasn't ever likely to pass them? Did he lose his spot for some reason, if so, why? If he was a younger player, why was he not willing to wait it out and wait his turn and how is it going to be any different at Bama? Is it something else like a coaching change, bad scheme fit, he was in the dog house and pushed out, is it simply a money grab. etc...

Most good teams are not going to lose the guys they want to keep... there will be some here and there, but it's a fairly small percentage. Still, the key is holding onto those guys you want to keep and bringing in guys that fit well on and off the field. If you get rid of 5 bad apples, bringin in 3 isn't going to help the situation all that much. And if a player isn't wanting to come in for the right reasons first and foremost, that is a red flag that should be hard to look past, regardless of their ability.

There is a culture change taking place right now in Tuscaloosa, no too much unlike the one that happened between '07 and '08, though not as extreme, IMO. Getting the right guys to help cultivate it and re-build it under the vision of DeBoer is pretty important. They need to be good players too obviously, but it won't be a good fit for everyone.

Hastz committed to ole miss.
I think Hasz was tough one to get here. He'd have to be splitting catching reps with Cuevas and I think they want a more pure blocking style TE who can catch some as well. Obviously would be nice to find someone great at all aspects but that's unlikely at least a good blocker would be ideal at the moment.

We're still looking for OL help and a TE in the portal probably waiting to see what sort of grabs we can take from some of the playoff teams too.

Why? Marshall administration did this to themselves. They did not handle Contract situation with Huff well. Players saw all of that and when Huff left, Players decided to do the same. YOu can't just do this to Huff and not expect players to be loyal to school.

I say let South Alabama double up on bowl games. They play today just like Army, the turnround would be the same for both teams. And easy enough trip for them.

I mean it sad for the players not getting this as and award for the season! Maybe these players will go to the place Huff go to.

I get that changes will occur with a new coach but the cutlure that was down there won a lot of games and championships as we all know. In a different system for sure so some change is required but a cutlure change does not mean it will be a good thing. Going to need to see how that looks with regards to wins and losses.

That's true, but if the culture was where it needed to be this time last year, Saban would still be the one coaching them. On DeBoer, he may get it dialed in exactly how he wants it and still eventually fail. But if he doesn't attempt to make some changes to it, he'll almost certainly fail. The promising part of it is, the group of transfers he brought in last year turned out to be pretty damn good. And of the lot, you'd be hard pressed to think back on the season and point to too many boneheaded plays, penalties, etc. If he can keep getting the right guys from the portal to supplement the roster with the same type of players that he's recruiting from HS... things should work out alright.

Will wait and see and hope you are right. As far as the boneheaded plays I agree. Most of those were reserved for a team leader and saban WR recruit.

Not to single anyone out, but players who keep making bonehead plays.... some are moving on. NFL, Graduation, Transfer...
