šŸˆ Toomer replant funded* by Bama fans

Yeah...I equate this with the French wanting to paint the Statue of Liberty silver. Why not, they give it to us and have an equal right to it????

A gift is a gift is a gift. A nice gesture.

EXACTLY...And there in lay the issue. If we were to fund the tree entirely, how is good taste or conscience could the trees be used in a manner (i.e. for rollling with TP) that the entire country knows that we find offensive? The first time that happened you know this would be aired in the press, and some other lone nut-job with a tree-killing cocktail will be back down there again...only this time the Barn's case as a victim will be less valid.

Because their TP tradition is important to them, they need to own it. They can recognize the Bama gesture, but should decline if possible.

I think the gesture is important, more so than the actual gift. Even if Auburn turns down the offer, which I would expect, the money could be donated to a charity that does work in the state.

From my perspective, and unfortunately many Auburn fans disagree, the response from the University, football staff, and the fans has been overwhelmingly supportive coming out of Tuscaloosa. I expected as much, many didn't.

It's a shame the guy is associated with your team, but at least this has gotten the attention of both fan bases enough to make people stop and think before something more serious happened.

Its easy to point out the act of poisoning those trees and show disapproval, but at the end of the day I dont really care one way or another. It's their problem. I dont know Harvwy Updyke. This will not have an effect on my daily life.

But im not going to miss an opportunity to point and laugh at them later on.

^Thats kinda my opinion on all the hoopla now that the story has been out for a few days.

Oh yeah, the Rev. Chet Williams always needs more donations for his "Ministry".
For that reason alone i wouldn't give them a nickle. I just don't get why our fan base
is being the sacrafical lamb here. We're getting crap becuse of the actions of 1 whacko fan.
It's almost like the black guy next door to me blaming me persoanly for slavery simply becuse i'm
a white man. I wasn't Alive to even own any slaves inthe 1800's. I didn't poison the tree, neither did
any of the fans as a group. Harvy Updyke did that all on his own with no help from the millions
of other Alabama Fans in the world.
So why does everyone feel guilty or responsable for somthing they had ZERO control over.
Nope, i'll send my hard earned cash to something more important than a couple of trees that were already on they way to being killed.
Something like Nicks Kids. Taht way i know it's going to a good charity and not to pay some 18 yr old kid to play for the Barn.

Since when does donating to something mean you feel guilty about it? People who donated don't feel responsible, they're just people who want to help.

I find it an interesting puzzle. How does a Bama fan at the same time say both "I hate that some loon hurt your feelings claiming it was in my name" and say "I still disapprove of rolling trees just as much as I ever did"?

Perhaps a bill board that simply reads

"Auburn and Harvey Updyke both make us sick.
- Some Alabama Fans"

I think the gist of the tree fund is in a word called EMPATHY.

I certainly have it for AU in regards to what that idiot did. I don't feel obligated by what the tool did, I just feel bad for AU. As much as I love to beat those guys (especially since they beat us like a dog in our down years), my moral (for those of you who get your panties in a wad, I said MY as in MINE) conscious feels bad for them. This is a game, not war. Therefore, justifying ANY physical harm to anyone or anyone's property is utterly..... stupid.

There might be some good that comes from this, such has people taking a little inventory about this rivalry & understanding that NO game is worth getting somebody hurt, of which both fan bases lose it when the visitor enters that stadium or leaves a victor (bottle throwing comes to mind).

I donated to Relay for Life--I didn't cause cancer. AlabamaAubKiller, swing and a miss again.

I think the gesture is nice and think it is silly that many Auburn fans are acting like children about it. It doesn't give Bama rights to the gift (which would then be our property), it doesn't imply weakness by giving or receiving. It is a number of Bama alums and boosters trying to do what they think is the right thing and I applaud that.

It isn't my problem there are poor people, but I'm willing to help when I can. Some of the thoughts I've read here and other places shock me.

$40K has been raised. I really hope someone comes to their senses and donates that money to worthwhile charity that will use that money to help needy people rather than wasting it on a bunch of stupid trees.

There is nothing wrong with donating ones time, energy, thoughts and prayers to cause of one's choosing. I can dedicate 100% my life to fighting hunger and fail to conquer it, but we both agree that my life would have made an difference. What do we think of a person who dedicates 25% of his potential to Hunger and the balance to coaching little league, doing mission work with his church, and donating to support the public library? I think this too is a life that makes a difference.

$40,000 is wasted in this case, as it effects change that the donor cares about. But you right in that we do need to be mindful of the greater perspective, like we do with the Bama vs. Auburn Canned Food drives and Blood Drives.

Let me see if I have this right, if an Iron Bowl in Auburn comes down to a last minute FG attempt by Bama and we miss, you are alright with TP being thrown into the trees. But should we make the FG and win, then you take issue with one of the Donors throwing TP into the trees? Presumably its about "[your] property", right? There is no other issue beyond ownership then?

By "our", you mean the tax payers right? Because officially the trees are "owned" by either the state of Alabama, or Lee County, or the City of Auburn. (Even Auburn is tax-payer owned.) Since none of these bodies have objected to the throwing of TP in the past, a precedent has been established that doing so is alright to do.

But its an Auburn thing.
This is irrelevant. Either it is an acceptable way to express glee, or it is not.
But it would incite the Auburn fans.
And it doesn't incite the visitors every single time? Let us not lose track of right and wrong.
I'm sure the cops would have to be called, so Public Safety Concerns would force them to stop the visitors.
Interesting. Guess that goes both ways. Heaven forbid a group of Bama FratBoys roll up offended and looking for a fight. The cops would have to stop the tradition in this caswe. Heck, Updyke could have been more successful if he started a fight at Toomers over TPing the trees.
Highjacking our tradition is classless and disrespectful.
Agreed, 100%, but its no different than me having to listen to another team play "OUR" Ramma Jamma cheer against us...and I lived. Poor manners has never been that compelling of deterent.
Well donating does not buy the right to act like you own it.
True, but that applies equally to those wearing orange and blue. Plus, I'll remind you of the precedent established by the owners (i.e. government) that TPing is alright. If it is permitted and protected for one group, it is permitted and protected for another. (Its that whole Equal Protection Under the Law thing that applies to virtually everything.)

In the end Duder this whole thing is set up to be a test of our civility and control on the individual fan level. There is nothing but the choice to use good taste at play here. No Rules, Codes, or Laws. That is what I find interesting. Will Bama fans let Auburn's tradition resume without a scene from our side? Will Auburn fans resume this with the right focus -- that TPing Toomers is a celebration between/among Tigers or will they make it a act of defiance targeting Bama fans who may bear witness.

Will Auburn ever get the chance to test the theory with a victory over the Tide. ;)

LBS, if we win in Tuscaloosa we aren't going to flood into The Houndstooth. No, it is not OK for Bama fans to openly mock an opposing school's tradition because a small sect of your fans tried to help out because another jackass fan crossed a line. If one of our nut jobs burns down The Houndstooth and we help fund the rebuild, any Auburn fan that shows up to celebrate the win would still get the hell beat out of them.

Rammer Jammer is a song played at all major sporting events. It was taken from an Ole Miss cheer. While I didn't like our band playing it, it isn't exactly equating apples to apples.
