Knowing that Saban doesn't do anything by mistake what's the reasoning behind U of Auburn? Just to annoy? Between this comment and the comments of last year's Iron Bowl it seems Saban likes playing "games" with Auburn.
First, its a dig at a rival that gets under some people's skin (theirs) and juices up others (us).
Then, in a rivalry where they have for years tried to lessen the UA by calling us UAT, trying to imply that we were on the same level at the UABs and the UAHs instead of being the state's banner carrier by virtue of carrying its name as THE University of the state, CNS' dig paints them as the representive of a tiny town out in east Alabama.
Further, it implies that if he is not concerned enough to get their name correct then they can't be that big of a deal.
Lastly, it is a continued custom of calling them by anything but the name they have chosen. Coach Bryant called them "that cow college", someone else had a pattern of refering to them as "that school down the road", and now "the University of Auburn".
(BTW, didn't one of their own commitments call them that as well? )
If memory serves me correct. Coach Bryant always referred to Southern Miss as Mississippi Southern. They changed the name to USM in 1962. Yet for 20 years (until his death) they would always be referred to as Mississippi Southern.
An example of the difference between boogs and us... experienced this weekend: Met boog yesterday so he could watch us (control) burn 300 acres. First, I gave him directions and told him to meet us at the skinning shed. He replied "skinny shed...what's that?" He then showed up in a two-wheel drive truck. He should have just shown up in a doodle-bug. He brought a 6-pack of beer (in bottles) with no ice and no cooler. The burn was cancelled due to wind. He asked me if I would help him get his boat running, that has been sitting outside, uncovered since last summer. He can't launch it by himself, doesn't know how to tie a fishing knot and can't take a fish off of a hook. He does not know how to hunt, but wants to hang out with the guys at the camp. He said he wants to teach his boys to fish in a year or two, and I told him that he has two years to fiure it out himself. War Spread Eagle.
If CNS was looking to "slap them in the face", he could have referred to them as "The University of West Georgia at Auburn". I think he would've gotten some feathers ruffled.
