🏈 Tennersee has hired butch jones

A few things we can say about this hire—some know and don't know points.

This UT base that has some complaining is also the same fan base that thought Kiffin was their answer despite everyone saying it was a bad hire and all evidence available pointing to the fact he wasn't ready for a coaching job of that magnitude. These fans don't know a decent coach when they see won unless that coach just beat them on the field.

We've seen coaches take over successful programs and tank. Jones followed Kelly and continued winning. We know he's a decent football coach.

We know UT is in a better situation now than it was when Dooley took over.

We don't know how well Jones will do recruiting to the South. I suspect, since he has been recruiting to Cincy, he'll do ok.

We know UT had some dreams of landing some guys that were "reaches" in the most polite terms.

We don't know if Jones is as good a coach, better or worse, than Charlie Strong. Charlie has more experience in the southeast recruiting which is the only point I could highlight saying he was a better choice.

We know this year you don't see a lot of "big name" coaches looking for work. Based on what appears to be a pretty limited pool I'd say it was a good hire.

BTW, this is worth asking IMO.

Questions around Butch Jones because he took over after Brian Kelly but no one questions Kelly's success at Cincy when he took over from Mark Dantonio?

Considering he's followed the successes of Brian Kelly at his last two jobs (does Kelly or Jones deserve the accolades), how is he rated as a hire?

Great question. I was actually having a discussion with someone about Jones when he was mentioned for the Purdue job. I'm not sure how good of a coach he is at rebuilding a program, but his record indicates he can at least maintain one. This will be more of a rebuilding project so we'll know in 2-3 years.

BTW.......Love the Avatar.

Terry,

I haven't read anyone suggest this, just something I was thinking. Same thing I thought about Les Miles for years, but he's clearly shown he can keep it going.

If I were a Tennessee fan, it would be hard for me to judge how good of a coach he is - did he just inherit talent from the previous coach at his only two HC stops - considering it was the same coach that did good enough to land at Notre Dame.

The Jones situation is just odd because he followed Kelly twice in a row.

So, tennessee fires DD, then replaces him with a guy who actually lost to him? The barn actually did this very same thing with both the Terry Bowden and Tommy Tuberville hires. Bowden lost to Dye 55-0 in 1992. The very next season, he succeeds him. In 1998, Tuberville lost to Bowden 17-0. In 1999, he had his job. At any rate, good old rocky flop just can't attract anyone anymore. Not only can they not land a big name, the can't even land a decent middle of the road coach. The only plus about this hire is that Butch Jones does have better overall credentials coming in than Kiffin or DD had, but that's about it. I wonder if this means that they have finally given up on the Gruden dream.

Not true. People said that the same thing about us for a long time until we hired Saban. Bringing in a top notch coach can be a little tricky sometimes...if it wasn't tough we wouldn't have had all of those horrible years in the late 90's and early 2000's.

UT has two things that make them a top 15 place to coach: tradition that is probably only 2nd in the SEC, behind Alabama (I know, that's debatable), and boosters with deep pockets. Just because their Ath. Dept. is in the dumps right now doesn't mean they're going to stay there forever.

Enjoy it while it lasts...they sure as hell did while the tables were turned on us.
