šŸˆ Solomon: Oversigning Day leads to Packing Months

One man's opinion:

I don't think there is an ethical issues at risk here at all. Cut and dry, we all have rules (often complicated and with loopholes) that we must operate within. If we violate the rules we get punished. If the rules are poorly written allowing a team to go further than the writter perhaps intended, that is not a fault of the school but of the writter. If the school takes it to the limit but does not breach the contract, then kudos to the team for "playing the game" as someone else designed it. The Bobby Dodd reference is a good example; 60 signees or 25 signees, its still the exact same game of football. Playing the ethics card here is hypocritical from a sport that covets the "Trick Play" every now and then, as long as it does not BREAK the rules.

Program choose their own limits within the greater NCAA fences. The Service Academies are disadvantaged because the player must be Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines in addition to the Student and the Athlete... but that is the path they choose, and they don't bellyache about it. The Ivy League school choose high academic standards that virtually eliminate them from being able to bring in the athletes that allow them to challenge the SECs of this world inside the lines. The take pride in that identity. The SEC drew its ethical line in the sand by setting its ow

n requirements for academic eligability, signing restrictions, recruiting standards (well, the case is still open with this one). The point is that we all decide our own limits to a great degree, and that is alright. These limits impact what happens on the field. If you don't like the results, change your standards vice asking the rest of the sport to change to fit your wants. That line of thinking is in line with a child throuwing a tantrum on the floor because they did not get their way.

LBS, I completely agree with you.

I just don't see that this is an ethical issue at all. The athletic scholarship is by its definition a one year scholarship, renewed each year at the school's discretion. How is it unethical on our part if B J Scott or Star Jackson wants to start over somewhere else in the hope of greater playing time? Were we unethical when we told B J Stabler that his knees were such that they could no longer stand up to the rigors of college football, but we'd pay for the rest of his education? Even if you consider some of the moves "roster cuts" it seems to me that our current staff bends over backwards to see that the player is not disadvantaged, either continuing to pay for the education of the injured player or helping those wanting to transfer to land on their feet at a new school.

Solomon (and others) presume on things that they do not know when they attack the oversigning. Assuming all of our commitments sign on the linenext Wednesday, do they know which ones will qualify and which ones will not? Do they have any clue about who will be advised that medically they should not continue football? Already rumors are surfacing that Kerry Murphy will be one of those. Anyone who thinks we would "cut" Kerry just never saw him play when he was healthy.

I wonder what he thinks of the ethics at Ohio State, which allowed players found to have been in violation of the extra benefits rules to play in the bowl game.

i find it funny that people are inadvertantly giving saban a hard time for running a tight ship.. there have been a few players that got pushed away because of discipline problems, but that is now being looked at as a way to open up scholarships as wel..

of all the players in the ncaa that i thought got screwed out of their college scholarship the byu running back took the cake.. he got kicked out of school for having sex before marriage.. byu will say, "well he knew the rules when he signed up"..

well guess what.. these football players know the rules too.. they are expected to put fourth 100% effort.. they are expected to set a positive example.. and they are expected to fulfill their school responsibilities too..

i would bet my life that if a player is giving 100% that saban would never even think of running him off.. people tend to forget about saban giving those three scholarships last year to tiffin and 2 other guys.. tiffin didn't need it, but saban did it because it was the right thing to do..

FWIW, we have two players right now on the attrition list. One, has already been alluded to on this forum...the other, hasn't.

Count two off of defense next season. One starter, one back-up.

Daryl Collins has offers from Louisville and Kentucky, but has announced he will roll with the Tide starting in January 2012. He's ok with the gray shirt, knows about it before NSD. Put that in your "ethics" pipe and smoke it Mr. Solomon.

i really wish there was some kind of legit online verification of this so i could tout it in the darkest corners of all college football message boards.. lol

There is the article on the recruiting board (Al.com article) quoting him on the issue.

In answer to your question about Murphy, he is the starter in Terry's statement.

I'm tired of these jealous people that Hate Alabama talking about the signing # each year and kids being kicked off the team! Here's an Easy way to fix this and the Ncaa can't add or subtract! Please Correct me if I'm wrong, because I'm no expert!
1)The NCAA allows Teams to Sign 25 Scholarship Kids Per Year?!
2)Every Football Team is allowed an 85 Man Roster...Correct?!
3)If everyone is equal and let's say for the sake of Arguing that every kid will stay in school for 4 Yrs.
4)That means the NCAA is FORCING EVERY COLLEGE FOOTBALL COACH TO CUT 15 PLAYERS EVERY 4 YRS OR 2.5 PLAYERS EVERY YEAR...RIGHT?!
5)Here's a CRAZY IDEA....The NCAA should change the Rule from 85 man roster to a 100 man Roster for each Team!

Will someone explain his to me Please?! This would benefit the kids more than the teams! So why has this not been done?! Again, I'm no expert but I did learn how to multiple 25x4 and last time I checked college enrolled is considered to be 4 yrs.
I know this wo.t solve every problem but it would help a great deal! Please give me your thoughts!

Roll Tide Roll!

I'll go out on a limb and guess where this is starting. My guess is the bulldog fan on oversigning.com is stirring this up more, he created a wiki page and twitter account for oversigning (his name is all over the history tab), sending tweets to many, many diff writers, etc on twitter constantly.

I suspect he is fanning the fire with al.com writers as well with tweets.
