🏈 So who contacted Saban about leaving Bama?

I don't think any of the jobs filled before the championship game were formally offered to him. PSU wouldn't pony up the money necessary to get him.

It wouldn't shock me if Texas tried to go through some back channels. Mack Brown is on his last leg and that program fell apart QUICKLY after Pasadena. Even if he were going to leave Bama for another job I doubt he'd consider that dumpster fire brewing in Texas.

My guess is they were NFL jobs

I wouldn't be surprised if Indianapolis was on the list of those who came calling.

Honestly, this is something I'm REALLY curious about if anyone around here in the know has any info about it.

That was a topic of discussion on Jox today and they all agreed Texas was probably back-dooring it as well.

Thought that Tampa Bay (went after Chip Kelly and ended up with Schiano) was probably one that came calling and said they would not be surprised if Jerry Jones tried as well. Lord knows he is unconventional, even up to the point of firing Garret after one year.

IF Saban were to take over at Texas, he would likely win a BCS Championship in 2 or 3 years. He did it here and he'd have a better stocked cupboard to start out with there. But that ain't happenin' so who cares.

Are you nuts? Texas does not have the talent and depth he already has at Bama. It may be easier to recruit there, but Bama has more talent from top to bottom right now.

The other thing I would like to add is that in college football, every move would be lateral for him. He may have been approached by college programs, but there isn't anywhere else he could go and get MORE money, power and support than he ha with Alabama. The math back this position up. Texas, USC and maybe Ohio State and Florida are the only programs on the same level as Bama when it comes to the total package of facilities, fanbase, administrative support, recruiting channels, etc etc.

I have a friend who is a high end exec in Tampa, and he said (for what it's worth) that it was the Buccaneers that made the strongest push.

Saban listened earnestly to them but was not wanting to leave Alabama. Terry was adamant about staying in Tuscaloosa. She loves it there.

I don't think he meant that Texas has more talent, just that it has more talent now than Alabama did when Saban took over here, and that's probably an accurate statement.

Edit: Sorry, didn't mean to say the same thing as plano. Saw it posted after I finished typing.

Fair enough. I may have read it wrong. Either way, comparing the teams now is not much of a debate. They are both good but I think we all know how Saban has owned recruiting.

Also, when I said "Are you nuts" the tone in my head was not mocking or mean. I was asking it in a jocular fashion.

The Texas story did make the rounds. I checked with my Longhorn pal. He said that while he had herd the story, he could never tie it to any Texas source.

Because other fan bases assumed he'd bail on Bama after a few years. Let's face it, when he took over it wasn't exactly a program you'd think a coach with his reputation would retre from. Any time a rumor is discussed it'll make rounds because some people refuse to acknowledge that he had reasons for leaving his precious jobs. He's returned the Bama program to its old status--why the hell would he leave?

Money? He doesn't need it and Bama would pay it anyway.

Recruiting? Nope

Support of the AD and university pres? Got it.

Support of the fan base? Not an issue

Any job he could take, Notre Dame, Texas, USC included--would be a downgrade. He's too old to have to start from scratch at one of those programs, which is exactly what he'd have to do. He has no incentive to go anywhere unless he's just dying to prove he can win in the NFL which few college coaches have done. I don't think his ego would push him that far.

If he truly listened earnestly to anyone's offer it was as a courtesy. I don't believe he has any interest in going anywhere but off into the sunset
