| FTBL Select the option that *best* expresses your assessment of DeBoer to this point.

What best represents your evaluation of DeBoer as Bama HC so far?

  • He’s done well under unique circumstances: new to SEC, post-GOAT, an overrated roster, NIL, portal.

  • Meh, acceptable. Surprise wins & losses in year one were expected. I’m cautiously optimistic though.

  • I’m disappointed. Too many head scratching moments for a supposed top caliber staff.

  • I’m very concerned. 3 losses to unranked teams & no playoff was simply inexcusable with this roster.

Lost to one team that was "decent" and thats all tennessee was. Michigan played ...virtually....mostly #2s...Beat a Wisconsin..lsu...missouri...USCe...uga...

So i picked #5. "What the hell. " His interactions with jefferson in Michigan game was disheartening...ie. Sticking him back in game... he didnt look in control...he looked dumbfounded...lost...at times.
Not one for pulling a QB. But @ Oklahoma...n Michigan.... he said JM had a look in his eye and thats whyhe hestuck with him.... the tv showed JM...wasnt a look of determination...imo

So...yeah...i picked #5
You talked me into changing my vote lol. I did not go all the way to #5 but #4. There was some Shulaesque things I witnessed that are very concerning. I keep going back to the success he has had with his record in an attempt to keep my concerns in check.

Explain this one to me.

The B1G, "back on top like it was in the '90's," where the conference shared a 1/2 of a national title with Nebraska (Big 12?) The ACC ruled the '90's with right at half of the national titles (FSU X2, GT, and Miami.)

This is another one that doesn't "click" with me. I don't get the thought here.

"...play calling were often head scratchers..." versus ... "why not do more short and medium range passes?"

We all knew that those passing routes were one of the, if not THE, weakest portion of Jalen's game. Why would they move to that type of "attack" when it's not in Jalen's wheelhouse?
Nebraska, Notre Dame Miami and FSU played spirited scrimmages most of the year… Things would have panned out different if the played in the Big 10 conference in the winter … The Big 10 was still the darlings of football.. The beat each other to death like the SEC is doing… The total media focus was still on the Big 10, mainly Michigan and OST ..The SEC was basically laughed at until at actually made moves in playing power football…

I still believe in DeBoer. You don't have success everywhere he has been by accident or luck. He knows how to build a program and he knows how to motivate players. And he had a very good defense and running game in Washington. It wasn't just Penix and Odunze. So I am willing to give him a couple of more years. I think his biggest issue is that his OC ended up somewhere else and he had to settle for Sheridan. Wommack improved as the season progressed so maybe he is learning. We will see. But I think DeBoer had so many issues that were difficult to overcome. 30 players or so hit the transfer portal, which affected depth, especially in the secondary and LB. Milroe is a mediocre QB but DeBoer didn't have a choice in starting him. The team belonged to JM. JM definitely did not fit DeBoer's offense. The best WR on the team was a true freshman, which is not a good thing, despite RW's incredible talent. The schedule was pretty difficult and the SEC was totally different, especially with the surprise team Vandy. To be perfectly honest, I don't know if Saban would have done better, because last year they had a lot of similar issues. But let's see how DeBoer does this year with more of his players, his coaches, and his scheme. Because I think Ty Simpson will be a much better for for his system.

@brandonvandegraff dipped into the analogy pool yesterday with his Geometry and Algebra III comparison. I"m taking this a step farther.

Loren Allred - Wikipedia . I am a big music fan and play music daily for at least an hour if not longer. I teach and do workshops but I am not into any of the pop and popular music so I did not know who she was. The wikipedia mentions "Never Enough" platinum album maybe that is the hint?
The Greatest Showman?? 🤷‍♂️
November, 1979, The Wall.

"The Show Must Go On."

"In the Flesh"

Followed by "Run Like Hell."

Is this obtuse enough? Not too subtle of a thought, is it?

If you took any of the B1G teams and put them against other conferences in the 90's, it doesn't spell "dominance of a decade."

Michigan, as example, had a winning record in the '90's (by one game) against the AAC, the PAC, the Big12, the SEC, and the SWC (they were tied with MAC, ACC, WAC.) .787 winning percentage in the B1G.

Ohio State didn't fare as well as Michigan in the B1G. NOW, OSU was 3-0 against the SEC in that period. With Michigan, the conference is 7-3. With Penn State, the conference record is 13-8 if we look at B1G vs SEC.

I'll agree with you that the B1G dominated the SEC in that period. College football? No. I can't.

@24and7 if you will also recall, this was just a few years before OSU went on their streak...of losing games to SEC teams. I know it was in double digits...and I believe it was UofSC that the Buckeyes beat to end their losing streak.

I am not convinced that DeBoer has done a very good job getting players to improve. I am basing this on the fact that this team regressed as the season went on, especially against UM. However, I do think an argument can be made that the Defense definitely improved but was that do to Wommack? To be fair I'll still concede it was somewhat due to CKD. Offensively, this team got worse & that is supposed to be CKD's wheelhouse, right? This is why I chose 3.

I am NOT thinking about the need to put him on the hotseat. And there are other issues that I don't care to nitpick at this point. But he doesn't get the benefit of the doubt anymore for me.

Jake Haener was a CKD product.. People forget him… Maybe CKD can make Ty perform like him…Penix may or may not happen here anytime soon but Haener type performance may do…

I think so… Ironically it took a big10 coach to change the whole SEC… Nick Saban began his fourth-quarter program at Michigan State, to survive the riggers of the Big10…Then he came to LSU 🙃 and brought it to the SEC.. Also a big focus on recruiting big10 sized players… Then the SEC had to step up their game..Thus causing the SEC to take over football..

Previously, Shug Jordan said about Coach Bryant-it’s a helmet busting, hell for leather game we play in the SEC. Since Coach Bryant came back to Alabama, it’s the only thing that will win.

And here I'd point to Spurrier, from the ACC, as changing the face of SEC football. 1990-1999 with only three seasons where his teams didn't finish #1 in the East (three second place finishes with two SEC losses.) I want to say UF had five SECT's, UT three, and Bama two in that stretch. LSU didn't show up until their three loss team that beat UT in ATL: '01, I believe.

Off the top of my head...may have missed by one here or there. I know that's close.

Yeah who can forget Fat Phil..(me).. Finally he ran off his better OC and brought in Dave Clawson…Thank Gawd..
Spurrier ‘s finesse game had the SEC on their heals.. Thought he was unbeatable most of the time… Then he tried on Nebraska… He or Florida was never the same after that mauling..

So people keep plugging Ty to take over next year.. Is he accurate??.. on crossing patterns?? On the deep ball??…If the answer is no, then is Mack??…Accuracy and precision is everything in CKD’s offense..

Never the same? Spurrier won his Natty the following season. If my memory serves me, UF was “never the same” after Stoops left as Spurrier’s DC. Pretty sure that’s when Stoops turned OU around and beat one of Bowden’s best FSU squads, although Stoops was fortunate that FSU was without OC Richt who had left for UGA before the championship game. I always thought that was odd timing. Why not stay on with your team to win another Natty??? Then move on to UGA with another feather in your cap!

The year after they lost to Nebraska in Tempe they beat FSU for the title in New Orleans. (That was the rematch game where SOS was complaining about QB contact with FSU.) In '97 and '98 they finished with two losses: one season including FSU again.

You and @50+yeartidefan should get together; you have a lot in common. :devilish: I'm going to disagree with you here, as well. 🤷‍♂️

In '99 I was in an Administrative/Webmaster role for one of Florida's biggest fan sites. I mentioned the relationship with the owner yesterday. It was that season that was the "nail in the coffin" for Spurrier at Florida.

It started with Zow in Gainesville. But, it wasn't Andrew that got in his head: it was DuBose. (If you'll recall, this is the same time period where SOS was accusing Bama staff members of kicking a recruits dog.)

His "anxiety" was raised several degrees when UF lost to FSU. UF fell apart in that game. A LOT of penalties, blocked punt in the fourth, INT in FSU's territory (red zone, inside the five as I recall.) That was the year FSU went on to the title game; undefeated.

Bama and UF met in ATL for the SECCG. We know what happened there.

UF went to the Citrus where Sparty ripped their hearts out, again, with a last second field goal to win. UF had four losses that season.

Do you remember the road loss to State in '00? UT got them that year or the next.

Looking back I see a coach whose ego was beaten, black and blue, by the success of FSU. A coach who hears the knocks on the door with people from the league inquiring about him making the jump.

And then...a losing record to Mike DuBose.

The latter, enough to do anyone in.
