Just saw on an Alabama facebook page that there is a rumor circulating around T-Town that Sal Sunseri is coming back to coach again on defense. Of course with it being a facebook page, i figured i'd better come here and see if any of you might have heard a whisper of anything.

The ability to guess who Saban is going to hire is as difficult as forecasting what kind of season Auburn is going to have.

With Sunseri, I have serious doubts those burnt bridges can be rebuilt. With Saban, you never know.

Yor saying that it not all burnt up, some part of the bridges is able to be walk on?

Take a guy like Ron Middleton. When he left there were extenuating circumstances. His wife, her health, the fact he was moving to Duke who offered great medical care and fewer hours. IF the opportunity came up and there was a position available I can see him returning to Tuscaloosa.

When Sal left there were extenuating circumstances as well. Much like Steele, he had the opportunity to move from a position coach to a coordinator's position. However, he made no bones about questioning coaching decisions Saban had made: IE: using Vinnie on special teams. If you recall, Vinnie was hurt in the first quarter against Arkansas when he hurt his knee on the kickoff coverage unit.

Sal made it a point to state, on more than one occasion, Vinnie shouldn't have been on special teams and if he wasn't he wouldn't have been hurt. When Vinnie was getting advice from the staff at Bama on the benefits of staying another year in school Sunseri was critical of that advice.

There you have two situations where Sal has been critical of coaching decisions made by Saban. In my opinion, that's a bridge Sal chose to burn and one I don't know if he'd be willing, or even able, to put those feelings aside and return.

Saban? I don't know what he thought about Sal being so outspoken. So, who knows what the bridge looks like today.

Vinnie pulled in a little over 500K this season. Not a bad year. Would it have been better with another year in school? Saban thought so, Sal insisted he was wrong.

Based on what I know about Sal and my thoughts on how he'd carry these feelings for years I just can't see him returning.

My opinion.

Word is, Lupoi has that spot though, which is very good news IMO.
Agreed. A step up in coaching and, at the least, a draw on the recruiting side. It's amusing to me thinking Lance has a benefit of being well known in the SE but Lance also has a disadvantage of being well know in the SE.

Word has it they've been talking to Townsend for a bit as well. I'm still shaking my head at that thought. What do I know...

Terry, just to throw something out here... The examples you give all involve Sal AND HIS SON. You know as well as I, fathers don't often think clearly when the futures and careers and even playing time involve their sons. Almost like a crime of passion, I would imagine the recidivism rate for offenses of Sal's nature is pretty darn low. If Sal DIDN'T fight for his son, I would think less of him as a man.

Now, if his conduct included criticizing Saban in front of others instead of behind closed doors or if that conduct included fomenting discontent amongst the players, I would think that's inexcusable. In fact, I would bet it wouldn't have flown from the moment it happened. Could this be why this year's team was so much more enjoyable for Saban?

Pretty much everything Bama related is speculation on my part. Anyway...

Should be interesting to watch...

There's where I don't know how Saban reacts in this situation.

And you're beginning to hit on what I was speculating about...given how closely knit that family is (picture Italian in it's purest stereotypical form) I don't know if it's something Sal can just drop.

I think this is a subject that fits "off-season banter" right now. In the end, it won't matter because he won't be here.

Tosh moving to the field looks like a given. Who fills in that ninth slot? There's what is left to be seen.

One thing to keep an eye out for is the rumor is getting stronger and stronger that the NCAA P'sTB will have a vote this summer on putting one more "on the field coach." We very well may be looking at 10 in the fall.

Sal Sunseri doesn’t stay in one place for very long.

Florida State’s defensive ends coach worked with three different programs since the start of the 2009 season. His longest tenure since the start of the new millennium came from 2002-08 when he was the defensive line coach for the Carolina Panthers.

Sunseri is prepared to return to the NFL, according to Noles247.com.

“Multiple sources have informed Noles247 that Florida State defensive ends coach Sal Sunseri is headed to the NFL and he’s taking a job with the Oakland Raiders,” 247Sports.com’s Josh Newberg reported.

The Tallahassee Democrat‘s Corey Clark confirmed the initial report.

Since his coaching career began in 1985, the Raiders are the 12 different organization to employ Sunseri. The coach’s longest tenure at any stop was eight years at the University of Pittsburgh to begin his career.

Sunseri will now join Jack Del Rio‘s new staff. His exact role has yet to be revealed, but his only previous NFL experience came in Carolina working with the defensive line.

It seems to be the perfect time to leave Florida State, too.

The Seminoles lost their first game in two years during the Rose Bowl against the Oregon Ducks. The team also lost its two most talent defensive linemen, Eddie Goldman and Mario Edwards Jr., to the NFL draft.

With Sunseri’s departure, assistant head coach Odell Haggins will likely take full control of the defensive line.
