I think UT was in a similar situation like when Dubose was hired at Bama.

We were at the height of Spurrier at UF with the Fun and Gun offense, lighting up everybody they played and here we were still stuck in the 60's with run right, run left, run up the middle, but still winning. Dubose promises to open up the offense and change things up. With Stoops having left UF and rekindling the once proud Oklahoma, I think we had hopes that Dubose would be our version of Bob Stoops.

UT, had suffered some mediocrity the last few years of Foolmer, and then hired Kiffen. We all know how that went. Dooley had the pedigree, but he was no Vince. Just a guess, but they assumed with the right support and backing that he would be able to get it done in Knoxville. He had one good season at La Tech and there was a glimmer of hope.

It is such a crap shoot hiring coaches and hoping they will be the next Dabo, or Rhule.

I never disliked Dooley. Actually like his dad who has always been a class act. Derek just doesn't have the intangibles his dad had to be a great head coach. Can't blame him for that. Few do.

Always thought of him as less of a Dooley and more of a Derek (in the Gervais character sense).

He was an arrogant asshole as AD at Georgia. I jear he's fine now as he putts around making appearances and signing autographs, but back when he still had a decently sharp mind he couldn't be bothered by anything outside of the power brokers in Athens.

Unfortunately I was raised a Georgia fan and he was there during my days as a kid. He snubbed me very badly when I was like seven, and in front of a group of people one time and it made my dad very mad. We were at a basketball game and he was walking by (nobody with him or on him) and my dad said "hey son, meet our National Championship winning coach and AD, Vince Dooley", and he looked at us, gave us a snarl, and kept walking. Something that always stuck with me and I haven't been able to stand him since. Been a few other instances where I've heard him speak and it's his arrogance whether he talks about his heyday with Herschel or the publicized gardens at his house, he's always thought he was better. Like I said, now, he just putts along and sets up in the book store on Gamedays to sign autographs and with Steve Penley to sign his books. He's gotta be 200 now it feels.

Doing the research I have on the program I definitely felt Herschel was the only reason Dooley stands where he is today. I wouldn't consider him a guy that necessarily turned Georgia into a contender or did something no one else has ever seen like a Bear, Saban, Bowden, or even Paterno. He definitely got lucky with Herschel being a hometown Georgia boy and not going far away to school. other than that he really falls in line with guys like Donnan and Richt. Can you tell what years Herschel was there, ha ha ha ha.

Vince wasn’t that great either in my opinion. The biggest edge he had over his son was the high school talent in Georgia versus Tennessee. Vince also had two things that Derek didn’t have that led to his best years. He had Irk Russell and Herschel Walker. As a lifelong rabid Tide fan who has lived in Georgia my entire life, I never was a big fan of Vince’s. The majority of my friends were Dawg fans or Yellow Jacket fans so I lived to see their faces each time Bama won another NC. Of course, Bear won 6 in 18 years as we were growing up from children into young men. So, I got that treat a whole lot! Up until about a month ago, my Dawg friends had stopped coming around during football season. After their beloved pups finally beat Bama, they’ve all conjured up a reason to drop by … imagine that.

We beat him by the exact same point margin each time we played him. 31 He should make a good addition. Shoot, I'd be all for promoting him to OC and finding Bill something else to do

For any who are against this hire, relax. He’s being called a coach but he’s an analyst. It will be his job to dissect the opponent and determine trends that Alabama can attack and take advantage of. Are you really questioning the actions of Saban’s?
