🏈 Red Shirt Status in the BCSCG

95+% sure if they played it would eliminate the opportunity for UA to red-shirt them.

As weird as this sounds, no one is technically red-shirted until the entire season is over. In one move University's put in request for hardship waivers, indicate who they are red-shirting, etc.

It seems those requests were filed last year at the end of January. And, it also seems like it was a good month after spring camp before answers starting coming out from the NCAA on hardship waivers.

The players you have are good enough to get you to the National Title game. What value could someone bring who has not played a snap all year?

What hope for success would one hold out for this guy considering that the opponent is the #2 team in the country?

Well, these redshirts have been practicing against the #1 team in the country all season. :elephant:

Here's a theoretical twist to this question - if McElroy goes down with the game in doubt, do you burn AJ's redshirt?

Everyone on your roster gets to dress for bowl games, but their redshirt will be pulled ("burned" is a misnomer, because like TerryP said, players are not designated as redshirts until after the season, and if you don't use your redshirt in one season you can use it in the next).

And if McCarron is the 2nd-string QB, which he was the last I remember, you don't hesitate about playing him. As great as the program is looking, and what an awesome job Coach Saban has done, you still don't know for sure when this opportunity will come again.

Like I said, I dont see any benefit in doing it, I just wondered how the game being after New Year affected the redshirt status if those players considered redshirts played in Jan 1st and after bowl games.

I was wondering the same as the OP recently. My thoughts were not centered around competing against Texas as much as if Bama were up by a good margin at the end, getting those guys in for a snap or two just so they could say they took the field during the NC season.

On a side note. Any chance they send Donta in for a play at the end if the game is out of hand in Bama's favor? Kind of a "no-contact" play? This may be an incredibly stupid questions, but I am wondering.
