🏈 Red shirt related question

If I'm not mistaken a player cant play more than 1/4 of the season right? Basically meaning nothing past game 3. Now does an "injury" have to occur if the player plays in the first 3 games to then receive a red shirt?

The reason I ask is I think the intention would be to red shirt Corey Grant this season, however with Ingram out for anywhere from 1-3 weeks (presumably) wouldn't it be a reasonable to let Corey grab some mop up duty for the experience and still be able to preserve his red shirt status when Ingram returns?

I don't see why he couldn't receive extra eligibility if he is out all year. I know there is a process and you have to apply through the NCAA and they of course have the final say. I don't know how hit or miss that is, but I would like to think they would don't see why not. Is his knee really that serious? I heard a report that is isn't expected to affect his future game play as in the NFL.

A RS on Ingram is a moot point. He is only a junior. IF he were to somehow miss this season. He would still be able to come back next year as a senior. Him staying as a fifth year senior is slim to none.(which is what you would need a medical RS for) He will have a degree in hand by this time next year and millions waiting for him in the NFL. If he has a good season and is in the running at all for the Heisman. (makes it to NY as a finalist) then he is gone IMO.

The only way we get to keep the likes of Dareus, Jones, Ingram, Hightower, is if the NFL lockout comes to fruition.
