5-star DE on why Alabama is in good shape, 5-star LB to visit and how Tide played part in prospect’s best day ever

Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Roll Tide-ings, a rundown of everything happening in Alabama Crimson Tide recruiting, with Chris Kirschner. Today, we discuss the latest with 5-star DE KJ Henry, Mobile DE Andres Fox and 5-star LB Teradja Mitchell.

Alabama in good shape with 5-star DE
We’ve already written about this in the days after 2017 National Signing Day, but getting several quality defensive linemen in the Class of 2018 is arguably the Crimson Tide’s biggest priority in this recruiting cycle — just like how it was in this past class.

One of the names on the top of Alabama’s wish list is the nation’s No. 2 defensive end, 5-star prospect KJ Henry from West Forsyth High School (Clemmons, N.C.).

Outside linebackers coach Tosh Lupoi has positioned the Crimson Tide to be in the race for Henry all the way up until he makes his college decision.

“I talk to coach Lupoi a lot. He’s a great guy,” Henry told SEC Country in an interview last month. “He’s really funny to be around. Just being on their leaderboard as one of their top prospects and being wanted by such a great school is a really good feeling.”

The Tide communicate with Henry at least once every week, and that’s perfectly OK to Henry. Some prospects need coaches checking in on them every day, but Henry is fine with the amount the staff talks to him. He said Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State are three teams that will likely be in the race until the end.

“As long as they stay on the same road, they should stay in pretty good shape,” Henry said. “They talk to me once or twice every week. As long as they keep on doing that, they’ll be in good shape with me.”

All three of these schools have been extremely successful in recent years, but that’s not going to determine why he’ll choose a school.

“People ask me if a team losing a game weighs on my decision and I always tell them, ‘No,'” Henry said. “In this aspect, I guess it would be no as well. It’s a selfish business, ultimately. I need to look out for myself. I just want to see how schools are going to develop me as a player.”

The 6-foot-6, 217-pound prospect has noticed Alabama’s ability to churn out NFL prospects every single year. He mentioned how Jonathan Allen and Dalvin Tomlinson are expected to be selected early in the draft. That matters to him.

It’s one of the biggest reasons why the Crimson Tide, Buckeyes and Tigers are all in good shape to land Henry. Those three schools have shown that not only do they win on a consistent basis, but they also produce prospects every year.

“That’s definitely one of the biggest factors — being successful in helping players get to the league,” Henry said. “They’re teams that have a lot of really good players. To have them just turn out good players every single year is a good look for them, and it’s all about how they’re winning and how they’re going to continue to keep winning.”

Expect Henry to visit Tuscaloosa this spring or summer.

5-star LB to visit Alabama
In case you missed Wednesday’s edition of Roll Tide-ings, we talked about the nation’s No. 1 inside linebacker, Teradja Mitchell. I mentioned how Mitchell hasn’t visited Tuscaloosa yet but was hoping to change that. On Wednesday night, we got that answer.

Mitchell, a 5-star prospect from Bishop Sullivan High School (Virginia Beach, Va.), announced that he will visit Alabama during the weekend of Feb. 25, which is when the Crimson Tide will have one of their junior day events.

Mitchell has been a longtime lean to Florida State, but Alabama will have its chance to change that if he follows through with the visit.

The 6-foot-2, 232-pound prospect told SEC Country that he’s been in contact with Lupoi and defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt over the past few weeks.

“It’s a school I am definitely interested in, and over the past few weeks, I’ve been developing a higher interest in them after talking to them more,” Mitchell said. “I’m just excited to continue building a relationship with the coaches and hopefully get a visit in soon.”

Pruitt and Lupoi have been selling Mitchell on becoming another cog in the Alabama machine.

“Come to ‘Bama and keep winning national championships,” Mitchell said of Alabama’s message. “At first, I was just like, ‘Yeah.’ But now I see that they are all about developing players to be top notch.

“That’s one thing I look for in a program — somewhere that can develop me into the best player I can be to help me get to the league.”

Mitchell is planning on making a commitment in either November or December.

Alabama plays part in prospect’s best day ever
Feb. 8, 2017, was the best day of Andres Fox’s life.

Fox, a 3-star defensive end from Mobile (Ala.) Christian School, picked up an offer from Alabama on Wednesday. It certainly was a meaningful offer for the in-state prospect.

“It’s the best day of my life,” Fox told SEC Country shortly after being offered by Alabama. “It’s been a dream of mine just watching them growing up, and now I have a chance to play for them.”

The 6-foot-5, 230-pound prospect grew up a Crimson Tide fan and admits that the emotions were running high after Pruitt extended a scholarship offer his way. So, was commitment on his mind as soon as he was presented an opportunity to play for Alabama?

“I just have to talk it over with my family,” Fox said.

It’s as simple as this — if the Crimson Tide want Fox in their Class of 2018, he will be in it.

Fox is rated as the nation’s No. 27 defensive end and No. 21 prospect in the state of Alabama.
