The same reason they care about anything. Ultimately, it's because it interests them. Sports, though quite important, really don't matter in the long run. One might be inclined to ask, 'Why do sports matter to you?'. Ultimately, the answer to your question is the same as the answer to this question. Because it matters to you, or him or her.

Anyone that comes to a forum about Alabama Football obviously has an elevated interest in sports. As this is clearly the case, some who post here have elevated their interest to such a degree that rankings matter to them. I am one of those. Rankings affect national prestige and recruiting.
