What does the #12 on the helmets stand for?

I think during the 1999 season they used the number 99 helmet. Just seems like that was right. Seemed like through the 90's they used the 90's on the helmet.

Think the 12 represents both NC's and players.

My HS number and he was one of the reasons I wore it.
