MOULTRIE — Colquitt County head coach Rush Propst confirmed on Monday that, yes, he will talk with both the University of Tennessee and the University of Alabama about a possible job.
“I’m on their radar,” he said, adding that it could be “a long, drawn- out thing” before there is an announcement about whether he will take another job or continue at Colquitt County.
Apparently Propst was in touch with Tennessee last week, announcing it on Phil Jones’s Morning Radio Drive program on 1150 AM and 96.1 FM last week.
He did not say exactly what jobs he might be in line for, although he has long been known for his teams’ high-scoring offenses.
But Propst, who just finished his 29th year as a head coach and his 10th leading the Colquitt County football program, is familiar with both SEC programs.
Jeremy Pruitt, who was an assistant under Propst in 2004-2007 at Hoover High School (Ala.), was named as the head coach at Tennessee on Dec. 7.
Last year and this season, Pruitt has been the defensive coordinator at Alabama and he will continue in that post through the college football playoffs. He also held that job post at Florida State and Georgia.
It has been learned that another former Propst assistant coach, Kevin Sherrer, will leave the University of Georgia, where he is outside linebackers coach, after this season to join Pruitt in Knoxville, apparently as defensive coordinator.
Tennessee has not officially announced any staff hires and might not until after the current season.
Two former Packers, linebacker Jay Blakely and cornerback Shawn Shamburger, are members of the Tennessee football team, which went 4-7 last year and led to the firing of head coach Butch Jones on Nov. 12.
Propst, who is from Alabama, and was a high school coach there for 19 seasons before coming to Moultrie in 2008, is friends with Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban.
Alabama will meet Clemson in one national semifinal on Jan. 1. Georgia will play Oklahoma in the other semifinal the same day.
The two winners will meet for the national championship on Monday, January 8, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Propst has a career record of 281-95 and has won seven state championships, including five at Hoover and two at Colquitt County in
2014 and 2015. He missed a chance at an eighth title when the Packers lost to North Gwinnett on a field goal after time expired last Friday in the Class 7A state championship game.
After posting a 176-61 record in Alabama, he has gone 105-34 in 10 seasons at Colquitt County. After going 4-6 in 2008, he has a 111-28 record over the last nine seasons, reaching at least the semifinals in eight of those years and making the championship game four times, winning twice.
His overall playoff record is 75-15, including 32-7 at Colquitt County.
Now 59, Propst did comment that the chance to get a significant salary increase would factor into his decision on whether to leave Colquitt County.
