Watching this got me to thinking how I'd handle this. I've always had an issue with people like this and I'm usually the one guy who bucks back.

Curious how you all would deal with this....

Probably would have said "yes sir" and did it better next time... lol Honestly, outside of the b-ball to the head, I didn't find much surprising about it. He was mainly grabbing on jerseys, shoving a bit, and cussing... I think the majority of us that have played some sort of sports have had pretty much the same thing done. Hell, I got kicked in the ass field goal style by a D-Line coach one time. One man's "motivation" is anothers "abuse."

That style of coaching has long died! Cursing has long been a part of every coaches style but when you start directing those at an individual instead of saying "that was SH*^^$ effort or piss poor!" then it is verbal abuse and shouldn't be tolerated. A coach should never put his hands on a kid other than to encourage him. Those shoves and balls thrown at players was totally out of line. I had coaches that yelled and screamed and I responded but every kid reacts differently. My first couple of years coaching, I did ALOT of screaming and yelling. I realized that it didn't work with all of my players. We had one kid that would fall to pieces if yelled at. I learned to "coach" him differently. I didn't pet him but I didn't brow beat him either. Alot of these coaches today have taken some of the coaching methods that they received and molded them into their own style.
When I was a walk on, Coach Homer Smith had his own style. He called me "Lefty Gomez" for about 3 practices. When I asked him why, he simply told me when " you start doing the damn drills right, I'll call you by your name!" He never screamed and yelled and pushed and shoved. He had a small bench made out of pine that he kept with us at practice. During 7 on 7 or even team stuff, if you screwed up, he told you to go have a seat on the pine!

You know, I'm cool with the verbal stuff to a degree, but when you start throwing stuff at me, pushing me, and kicking me, you've just taken it to a level that I'll gladly go to. I've always stood my ground and went head to head with ignorant authority figures - I've done it most of my adult life, I've only recently lost that edge as I realize I can't change stupid and no reason for me to put my job at risk for their stupidity. I know what tough love is, I served in the military - this isn't tough love this is just pure bullying.

The tough part, you have kids on scholarship who probably don't feel like they have an option to speak up so this crap continued and only one coach had the courage to step up and say something, in which the AD said he didn't have proof...and was eventually let go (as the AD said, his contract wasn't renewed).

I watched the interview on Outside the Lines last night and quite frankly I'm not sure what the hell their AD is thinking - he's honestly trying to defend letting one guy go and suspending another guy for 3 games (aka 1st offense). As far as I'm concerned, the AD's employment should be questioned at the least. They (AD and school President) have put a state University in jeopardy of lawsuits...that alone will be their demise, I can't see the Board or the government standing behind this.

At the end of this, I can see Rice being fired and their AD being reprimanded at least.

I'm with you, Plano. I think this coach's actions are bullying, plain and simple. I find it difficult to see how this would be motivational in any way. I'm not against colorful language, and I think sometimes those words make a point (if used rarely) that can never be made in other ways. Sports, especially in college, are not girl scout meetings. In a sense everyone's getting paid. But, I think this guy has crossed the line though into pure abuse.

I had a baseball coach that would throw baseballs at you when you didnt keep your eye on the ball at the plate. He made up a new version of cussing too. Had countless football coaches that liked the hands on approach. I didnt like it then and dont like it now, but back when I was growing up it was the standard. We just said yes coach and moved on. The thing is, your only seeing the "bad side " of the coach, most were just as good at praising also. In my day you would go from Goat to top dog back and forth, at the end of the day if he was a good coach he would have team meetings and go over all the daily stuff and you would leave there with the knowing that you put in a good day of practice. Best to just do what coach ask you to do an move on, all the other stuff will work its way out in the end.

Certainly uncalled for treatment, but 30-40 years ago no one would have blinked an eye. Even Bryant did it in his younger coaching years. To me the way Bobby Knight treated those who played for him was deplorable, and I would not have let a son of mine play for him if that had ever been an issue. Still, Knight's methods were well known, so all of his recruits had their eyes wide open when they agreed to play for him.

The verbal part of it always has been a part of coaching. Still, the successful coach should know his players well enough to find the method that works best to teach and motivate them. I have had to learn that lesson as well, over the years that I have been in management.

So now the Rutger's President is stepping away from this as well. Still not sure why the AD Pernetti decided to go on the record yesterday...bad move on his part.

I used to work with a guy that spit out cuss words like he was reciting poetry! After a while, the kids simply tuned him out. I too did it, but a seasoned coach pulled me aside and told me I could get my point across without all of the words. It was simply the way I had been coached in HS and had heard in college from a few others. I worked with others that never raised their voices or cussed but still got their point across. One of these guys, I even played baseball for. He would simply call us up during a crappy round of infield and tell us in a calm tone that, "this was unacceptable and not winning baseball. Now we can get better or go home!" When I later coached with him, the players would always ask questions about him during my playing days. They told me that they were more terrified of him than any other coach because he never changed his tone, didn't yell or scream, fuss or cuss, they didn't know what to expect. We went 38-12 that season.

On top of everything else wrong with it, the gay slurs were not OK either ..

I've had some tough, hardass coaches through the years but I have never had one call me names or physically abuse me.

Glad to see the guy was fired. Can't believe Rutgers knew about this back in December and ONLY suspended him ..

One more thing of note. Pernetti was responsible for moving Rutgers to the Big Ten, this could play into what happens to him.

Eric Murdock should have reported this differently, why did he sit on this - why did it take so long to share this video - why didn't he go to the school president or the press for that matter?

Interesting comment re: Big Ten .. I wonder what could happen? They aren't scheduled to join for another season, though, right?

P.S: Speaking of school scandals, 'The Onion' has some funny commentary (as always): 'Jerry Sandusky Horrified by Behavior of Rutgers Basketball Coach'

A lot of Rutgers faculty are calling for the AD Tim Pernetti.

http://www.saultstar.com/2013/04/04/rutgers-president-never-asked-to-see-abusive-basketball-video

.. and apparently the prez never asked to see the video after becoming aware of it.

Interesting to note:
"The gay rights organization Garden State Equality also requested an outside investigation, alleging Rutgers violated anti-bullying laws passed after student Tyler Clementi’s suicide in 2010."

^ Glad to see this is being addressed. The Clementi case was a HUGE deal at Rutgers and in NJ as a whole.
