Kirk: "If they didn't go fast and just line up and play football...they'd have a hard time moving the football."

Like many, who are fans of defensive football, Kirk alludes to college football turning into arena football...

Herbstreit took a beating before the game in NOLA because he picked BAMA over his alma mater. He went on Twitter and defended himself pretty nicely I might add. He went as far as to say something along the lines of " I love my school, BUT that I feel BAMA is in the better position to win the game." He definitely isn't a "homer" like a few others on that network. I enjoy listening to him and I think he is very insightful.

The biggest change is with the referees. I just dont know how you can FORCE the referees to slow themselves down. As soon as an offense starts going fast they pick up their pace times 10. Watch a regular pro style offense play and the way the referees move and then watch Oregon. If it isnt inside 2 minutes the referees should maintain a regular speed. Or lets just go ahead and get rid of defenses at all, because whats the point?

What I think will end up happening is teams are going to get smaller and smaller across the defense everywhere to try and match the speed of these teams. Then those teams are gonna get crushed by the ones still using the bruising running style with huge o-lineman. Its a cycle, possibly a neverending one.

He knows his football. He probably has the best insight into college football than anyone else in television. He knows his stuff and I respect the hell out of him for it. Reece Davis is another one that is pretty sharp.

I feel that it is the referees job to control the pace. They hold it so the defense can sub IF the offense does, BUT where they fail miserably is getting the chains set! I think they need to amend the rule and an offense that snaps the ball before the chains are set is hit with a delay of game penalty.

I think they need to amend the rule and an offense that snaps the ball before the chains are set is hit with a delay of game penalty.

We have had this discussion before. The NFL refs make sure that all of the officials are in position before they allow the ball to be snapped. That might have prevented some obvious but uncalled infractions this season, the most notable one being Auburn having twelve men on the field against Ole Miss. The refs are so frenzied to get lined up that undoubtedly they overlook offensive players not being set for a full count. Go fast if you want, but make sure that the rules are followed.

He may not be an obvious homer but it strikes me as interesting that he more/less dismissed what Saban has said in the past but now it's an issue? The reason, to me, is obvious. There's one thing I've heard Herbie say about this, and I've heard him say it repeatedly, and it is "look for defenses to fake injuries."

This is the first time I've heard him suggest a rule change.

I wonder if he found the production numbers intriguing at first, but now see's what a lot have suggested; it's changed the game, dramatically.
