The Patriots lost defensive line coach Bret Bielema to Joe Judgeā€™s staff in New York. But New England has hired Vinnie Sunseri from Alabamaā€™s staff, Matt Zenitz of AL.com reports.

Sunseri, 26, served as a graduate assistant with the Crimson Tide in 2019. He will have a ā€œsupport staff roleā€ with the Patriots, according to Zenitz.

Sunseri played safety and was a core special teams player for Alabama. The Saints made him a fifth-round choice in 2014.

He played 15 career games.

Sunseri spent part of 2016 on the Patriotsā€™ practice squad.

His father, Sal Sunseri, is Alabamaā€™s linebackers coach.

A kid that has football smarts, no doubt. I hate he didnā€™t make it on the playing side. When I hear his name I wonder if coming back for his senior year would have helped his chances. Maybe not. He played 6 games his junior year so he didnā€™t get 3 years under his belt on the field. Was a big special teams guy and had those 2 pick 6ā€™s before he got injured. He was learning the system well and you could tell a very intelligent player. Should serve him well as he escalated the coaching side of the sport.

I wish him the best of luck in his new role with New England. It certainly helps that dad is a coach, he learned a great deal as a GA at Bama under CNS and now he moves on to the Patriots with CBB. Doesn't get much better.

In all honestly, I'm thinking that a coaching position is a better career path than a player....
