🏈 Our Missing Link On Offense

I really don't understand why we never call a pass play that targets 15-25 yards downfield.
We rarely ever pass the ball beyond 10 yards unless it's a deep arching ball

And the weakest thing of all: when it's 3rd & 8+ , we never drop back in the pocket, and throw the ball past the marker. We essentially take a fucking knee if it's 3rd & 10+
I really don't get it. Treon Harris has more completions over 10 yards than Jake Coker

I mean, to Kiffin's credit, he opened this part up in the second half, but this has been a season long issue. IMO it's an issue of playcalling and scheme more than personnel.
It's also why the TE is rarely targeted - because TE routes are usually in the middle of the field

We pick our deep throws and take them. Coker isnt the most accurate QB so we have to use him carefully. He obviously had trouble throwing screens and a bunch of other throws that even Sims could throw last year. He throws behind his WRs on even routine throws. But he is tough as nails, runs hard, is a complete team guy and can do enough to win games if he is the last piece in the puzzle.

I would like to see him work on better ball protection when scrambling. Ball was def way too loose a few times.

Dude don't give me this bullshit. I feel 10x more confident entering the playoffs with Coker than I did with Sims. Sims was horribly inaccurate over 10 yards and couldn't have delivered many of Coker's throws tonight.
Don't forget that Sims also had a little help from Amari Cooper

The 2 deep throws werent great passes but nice adjustment and highpointing by the WR. So dont give me that dipshit nonsense. There are both things the QBs do better than the other and that was the main point of me bringing him up. You just cherry picked and ran with it.

It sucks that we won. :sarcasm:

If you worry about stats, you're worrying about the wrong thing. Alabama did what it needed to to win. There's plenty more in the playbook to use in round 1.

Sorry but that is just nonsense... simple TD pass to Drake against UF debunks that crap. He had more passing yards in a single season than any 'Bama QB of which you can't hold the record w/o accuracy beyond 10 yards, even with Cooper. And we didn't lose the playoffs due to Sims "inaccuracy".

Coker missed some real easy stuff tonight. He had no business missing at this stage in the year & as a 5th year senior. Nope. I am fairly confident in Coker. He has earned his keep but trolling Sims is just silly man.

Coker's infamous "slow release" is not the reason we don't have many deep throws. Coker is not the problem. The problem is our offensive line is just bad in pass protection. There's no other word besides bad. They can't protect long enough for a play to develop and the play calling reflects that.

Have you even watched the games? Sims was a much more accurate passer than Coker and capable of hitting intermediate routes Sims threw a beautiful deep ball as well. Coker is very "mechanical" to me. He doesn't grasp timing and throwing a ball with "touch". He has a wind-up and very long release (look at the AU pass that should've been a pick 6). The pass to Ridley was extremely underthrown and the Stewart pass was a phenomenal play by Stewart in obvious double coverage. Now the kid is tough as nails and he gets my respect for how he plays. He's also what we have and I'm fine with that. I will say a team like Oklahoma concerns me because of their ability to produce points. If we get down in a game more than a few scores we are in serious trouble with Coker's inadequacies.

Actually we did lose the playoffs due to Sims' inaccuracy. If you re-watch the game, you'll see our last opportunity squandered by Sims overthrowing a WIDE OPEN receiver 12 yards downfield.

I really really really fail to understand how the majority of our fanbase seems to think that Sims was the second coming of christ, and won't say one bad word about him, but have a mile long list of bullshit to say about Coker.

Sims couldn't crack the 6th string QB spot in the CFL. Coker will be drafted to the NFL.
You people are fucking stupid, and have selective memory.

Our offense is limited in the passing game mainly due Coker being below average in three areas; anticipating routes, staring down his first read on third downs and late with delivery. This is why we dont have more of an intermediate passing game. As others have mentioned, he plays hard just has more limitations in the passing game than our previous 4 qb's or so. Really reminds me of Tyler Watts. Where Coker is good is making sure we are in the right play; checking run to pass and vice versa...execution is the story here.

Our D lost the game to OSU and a big part of that was our all american safety and linebacker not being in the game to stop elliot in the second half. OSU was the better team on the day as much as i hate to admit it.

Jake Coker will not be drafted but may win the natty.

So we lost to OSU b/c of one incomplete pass? I'm not going to call you names or troll your intellect, you do a great job of taking the lead there.

And my point was very, very simple--> You don't set the passing records at 'Bama without being accurate & miss passes from time to time too. I underlined it for emphasis. Here are their stats:

Blake Sims 2014 Stats = 3487 passing yards, 28 TD's & 10 interceptions
Jacob Coker 2015 Stats = 2489 passing yards, 17 TD's & 8 interceptions

Don't let the facts get in the way of your perceptions.

FWIW, I don't think Sims was the second coming of Christ but I do think he is better than Coker so far & last I checked, so did the coaches. But hey, CNS apparently failed to get your view on the matter & 'Bama lost to OSU because of that too, huh? If 'Bama wins the NC with Coker, I'll have no problem affirming Coker as the better QB.

Oh yea, since you mentioned a crappy pass blocking for Coker & what we all chose to remember, I'm glad you brought up the topic of sacks. Coker has 17 now & Sims had 13. Both years the O-line has been suspect about pass protection but 'Bama was the least sacked team in the SEC that year & it had everything to do with how Sims avoided sacks better at that position than anyone else. Coker has been pretty gritty at that too but dang, that's got nothing to do with accuracy. Sorry to chase that squirrel.

Coker has earned his spot on the team as QB. I don't think he earned b/c of his fantastic accuracy though. His determination & grit did. I love that about him. He has made great throws, good throws, decent throws, lucky throws, & bad throws. His TD to Mullaney was EPIC but his TD pass to Stewart, into tripple coverage, lucky.

Lastly, there is a litany of QB's drafted in the NFL. That doesn't make them world beaters or accurate.
