| FTBL Where Are The Running Backs?

After 4 games I am wondering what is going on with our rushing attack. Miller is averaging 68 yds/game and has 4 TDs. Haynes is averaging 50 yds/game and has 3 TDs. Last night against Ga Milroe was our only run threat. Haynes had 6 carries for 36 yds and Jam had 5 carries for 10 yards. I want to see more production from our 2 primary guys. It's great when JM runs because he's so quick and elusive, but I also don't like seeing him take so many licks. It's a long season and we need a healthy JM. What is the issue with Jam and Haynes? Is it an O line issue? I really expected the line to block better in the run game. Is it an issue with the RBs? Is it more that JM just likes to keep the ball himself in the RPO game? Is it that the defenses stack the box to stop JM and that makes it harder for Jam and Haynes? I would like your thoughts on this because I really want to see those guys get going.

In last nights game I think uGA committed to stop the run the second half and Bama wanted to run the clock, so a bad matchup. I think we ran a lot of RPO with the intension of it not being any real pass option… so not a good mix. Milroe likes to keep the ball on RPOs when it’s a run. He should have given the ball on several of those calls, but did not. Just needs to read the cues better.

Not sure if it's Sheridan's play calling or just part of the philosophy, but it is infuriating at times. Same thing happened against Wisconsin when it was a perfect opportunity to bleed the clock and run the ball and just refused to utilize Miller and Haynes.

I can't remember if it was after the turnover or after Georgia cut it to 14. But Alabama regained possession and started with an 6 yard run by Haynes. I thought he looked hungry and fresh and Alabama was going to pound the rock to play time possession. The next two play calls were big head scratchers and all we did was take 1:30 off.

The jet sweep should definitely have went to Benard. I think Milroe did a little too much hero ball.

Milroe can’t run the ball unless he gets a chance to build momentum… he has a lot of trouble running from standing… he is an easy tackle if he doesn’t build that momentum..

I’m not so sure it’s all on Sheridan.. I think Milroe is pulling a Cam Newton and running his own stuff..

Scheme wise in the 1st half vs UGA, the preshifts and play calling was Sark-esque. Although not as much motion, it really did seem like the staff did it's homework and understood how to create mismatches. A lot of talk about how UGA adjusted by going to man, but rewatching the game, I don't think Alabama was nearly as aggressive in the 2nd half as they were at the start of the game.

Big learning moment for both programs. People are way over blowing UGAs second half performance and not focusing a lot on that the 1st half performance by Alabama is still nowhere near the potential of what this team really could be.

Haynes looks to be a really emotional guy. He was visibly upset during some of the stalled drives vs USF and really hard when he got the rock late in the game. I do agree with @TerryP and @Brandon Van de Graaff that the offense will start to feature both he and Miller more. I'm hoping it's sooner rather than later because the offensive line looks to be gelling at a rapid pace.

Gonna have to or he will leave. I have to think it took everything in him to stay and not head to Georgia when Saban left. That's why he's one of my favorite and even I am a little frustrated with his lack of touches.

Haynes and Miller had a combined 11 carries. Milroe had 16....
This is one of the reasons I said the offense isn't clicking yet. It's close, but not there. I'd have to look but I can say with little doubt Jam wasn't getting more than two yards a carry Saturday. It just wasn't his game.

uGA played "Wider" at the LOS in the second half to take away the edge runs we had in the 1st half. The Passing game was pretty open and we took advantage of it at times, but not very aggressively and more situationally which limited it's effectiveness. I personally would have like to see some RB runs up the A gap in the 2nd half to keep them a bit more honest on the edge, but we didn't see to want to go that route for some reason. Milroe also made a few poor reads on RPO that should have been given the the RB or the WR on the Jet Sweep. Jam not pounding up in the line for a 1st down was painful too. uGA was stopped several times but 4th down came to their aid... Almost all those 4th down plays were bang/bang and I still don't know how they all went uGA way.

Going back and rewatching the game and breaking it down a bit makes me feel a lot better. I think uGA got EXTREAMLY lucky to get back in the game. There were not many "mistakes" by Bama and uGA took advantage of every one of them and then they got pretty damn lucky on 4th down several times. The Refs also missed another Offensive PI push off on uGA vs our DB on the long pass to the 2 yard line and called some ticky tacky calls on us a few times. We also missed about 3 more INT in the 2nd half that were not that hard to make. Moore would make that play 9 out of 10 times... just weird he didn't on at least two of those. It was really a beautifully disguised defensive coverage twice that uGA fell into the trap and he just missed that easy INT.

After the game, I was very much of the opinion that I don't want to play uGA again... but now I'm no where near as worried as I think we would do just fine against them as long as we don't make stupid turnover mistakes. If you break down the film a bit, we were the better team by a good bit and the game should not have been as close as it ended up. It was only close mostly due to luck and circumstance making it so they had to start going for it on 4th down with 11 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Of course on the flip side, in a closer game uGA would have had more runs which may change the way our defense plays... so there is that to worry about ;)
