It is politics. Anyone who thinks she went without her Party and the White House approving it is mistaken. She was traveling on a military jet. The President could have ordered it to not enter Taiwan airspace and she could do nothing about it. The Democrats know Taiwan is a big deal to younger voters and are positioning themselves as supporters of the Taiwanese people if not officially supporters of an independent Taiwan. The US Government can still take the stance that Taiwan is part of China.
