🏈 On This Day In 1983, Coach Bryant Passed Away

Sixth grade! Sitting in History class at Corner Elementary School. My one goal at that age was to play football for "The Bear". I was crushed a month earlier when he announced his retirement.

All I had ever known was Bear was Bama's coach. I truly felt like I had lost a member of the family.
It was surreal to think of Alabama football without Coach Bryant when he had announced his retirement just before
the bowl game against Illinois. Then for him to be gone was really difficult. It absolutely hit very hard.

"This is the beginning of a new day. God has given me this day to use as I will. I can waste it or use it for good. What I do today is very important because I am exchanging a day of my life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever, leaving something in its place I have traded for it. I want it to be gain, not loss — good, not evil. Success, not failure in order that I shall not forget the price I paid for it."

I heard it on the radio coming home from work. When I got home my not yet 5 year old son met me at the door with tears running down his face. I asked "what's wrong Joshua?" and he said "Daddy, they said Coach Bryant died today." We sat in front of the TV the rest of the afternoon / evening and watched the various reports until his bedtime. And we both had tears running down our faces.
