SO sad to hear. We were good friends in high school. Unfortunately, we didn't keep in touch after. He was a year ahead of me, so he'd already moved to bigger and better things when I graduated.
We were in band together and we both played the saxophone. He wound up touring with Stevie Wonder (randomly met him in Riverchase Galleria one day and we talked for a while). Not a shock as he was VERY good. He later had his own band and was big in the music scene in Birmingham.
