🏈 On this day he retired leaving a great job! - Bryant retires in 1982

A few weeks ago in the coaching thread I mentioned I thought we needed to include "get's it" with "fit" when we watch a school hire a new coach. My example was, "Kelly got it, but didn't fit."

Here, moving on to Perkins. I believe he got it when it came to Bama football and winning. I don't believe he was a fit. A tough road for him following Coach Bryant that wasn't helped with what I can only call a quirky personality.

I also believe, if he'd stuck with the job, he could have brought a title to Tuscaloosa.

Damn. The timing of this thread.

Mike White, former Illinois head coach, has passed.

He coached in the Alabama vs Illnois game; Coach Bryant's last game in the Liberty Bowl.

Agreed! ‘85 team finished 9-2-1, with losses a combined 4 points. Got as high as #2 the next season then finished 10-3.

I never warmed up to Perkins. Seemed like he worried too much about looking good for interviews. Rubbed me the wrong way. Petty, I know. If he had won us a championship, I'm sure I would have gotten over it pretty quickly.

His personality was like sand paper. Not an ounce of humility as I recall. Finebaum said of him, “if he thought one person in the state liked him, he’d call him up and piss him off”. If you recall, he said UA would never play at API. He wrote a check with his mouth his rear end couldn’t cash. Following Coach Bryant was going to be tough, he way overplayed his hand.

A very good player at Bama, a good pro assistant coach, started the rebuild with the Giants of the NFL. IMO, he did not have that "fit" as @TerryP has mentioned for Bama. He did PO a lot of Bama fans when he took down the tower on the practice field. His attitude and demeanor just rubbed people the wrong way. Finally, it did not help matters at all the way he left Tuscaloosa for Tampa Bay.
