You sure are selective in your reply quotes. It's as if they were actually my only point of reference on the subject. You do realize that Smelley was in the same recruiting class as Julio?
Uh, yeah. Tusk, I was a family friend of the Smelley's when I was in school: worked for his father for a few years so I know Brad's situation and story pretty damn well. I know he played QB in high school but he was always known as a versatile athlete--one recruited as a TE/H-back from the start.
I'm not being selective, per se', on what I'm quoting. You and I are basically saying the same thing when it comes to OJ and the Clemson game. It's my opinion Venables didn't game plan for OJ. And, in all honesty, that swing pass wasn't what I would call a good decision. What I don't agree with is the notion that Mac used Brad better than Kiff used OJ--the numbers simply do not back up that notion. Heck, Nuss used the TE position better than Mac.
Here's what I'm looking at when it comes to the two.
Brad's numbers.
Frosh: 7 receptions, 98 yards, no TD's
Soph: 7 receptions, 50 yards, no TD's.
Junior: 6 receptions, 55 yards, no TD's.
Senior: 34 receptions, 356 yards, 4 TD's.
OJ's numbers.
Frosh: 14 receptions, 269 yards, 2 TD's. (That's under Nuss, and in one year he used OJ better than Mac did any of his TE's--2X the amount of production)
Soph: 17 receptions, 260 yards, 0 TD's. (Kiff's first season and that's with Cooper and White getting the majority of the receptions,)
Junior: 38 receptions, 602 yards, 2 TD's. (Taking Clemson out and he's still putting up better numbers sans the TD's.)
Senior: 45 receptions, 595 yards, 3 TD's.
In Smelley's entire time at Bama he didn't put up the same numbers as OJ did in one season (Junior.) If you want to say he was used better in our blocking schemes (IE: when he was with Michael Williams) I'll agree with that wholeheartedly.
